Books A Song of Ice and Fire (Books) | TV show? What TV show?

@lalloyd Well, not fully done with the third book... one signficant scene either still to come or has been left out.

If you're planning to read them from book four onwards I'm not sure it'll work, there are too many significant characters you'll either only the names of, or never have seen on the show. If you can be bothered it'll be so much better to read from the first one.

On second read, these books are even better. On Feast for Crows, half way through, and really enjoying it

I re-read the first three during the last few months and it was probably even better than during the first time. Eventually I am going to re-read the last two, but probably I'll wait a bit until we hear more news for the sixth book. I want to have my memory fresh when I read it.

There is 1 scene in the series that goes beyond whats been published in the books

Which one? There is a lot of stuff in the show that never happens in the books. It's hard to tell sometimes if it's something that will happen in the books or just something that they did instead of something that happens in the books.

You probably mean the scene with the Night's King?

Correct.

Most of the other scenes haven't gone beyond the book plot, Hound V Brienne just gives the last episode a boss fight, the characters still end up in the same spot, the Lannisters having no money could make the books

So, it's definitely confirmed that both Arianne and Quentyn have been cut and Trystanne is Doran's heir but they've still cast the three sand snakes. I'm not sure what they were smoking when they did the casting but I really can't understand the reasoning behind casting all the sand snakes and not casting Arianne (who's perhaps the most important character in Dorne behind her father). The plot in Dorne is going to revolve around Myrcella and Trystanne falling in love (:wenger:) with each other. No mention of Aegon, Jon Conington, Euron, Victarion or Manderley either. Now I understand the books are quite difficult to adapt entirely but they are watering it down wayyy too much and it's becoming too 'hollywood' by the season.

Some good news as well. GRRM says he's giving up everything else to concentrate on Winds of Winter and that includes the one episode he writes every season. I wonder if he's getting annoyed with the TV show. He's talked a lot about the TV show deviations recently... And on that note, he also revealed that Jeyne will be in the prologue for the next book.

I've become optimistic that he will release it sometime next year:)

I still think he has more written than he's letting on.

I expect the last two books to be released quite close together. He cannot let the TV show catch up or overtake. He'd lose too many book buyers.

Yeah, I kind of agree with you here. I defend the TV show a lot and think it's a good adaption, but I'm starting to think they might be beginning to lose their way. Cutting Quentyn is fine since they can merge him with Trystane long term, although Arianne should've been in there. I think they'll trim down the Greyjoy stuff and just keep Euron while cutting the other two. At a push, Victarion might stay.

They're kind of backing themselves into corners though since they've mentioned Theon's uncles on the show before, even if not by name, and they've referenced Trystane being the youngest son of Doran. Granted, a casual TV fan isn't going to notice or remember, but it still seems a bit amateurish in that respect.

Seems like a formality now. He has three years to release the last two books. Considering he's taking about 5 per book now, he probably won't make it. People will still buy the books anyway, and he's made plenty of money now. It's just a matter of him actually giving his big series a satisfying conclusion.

They've even changed a bit of Dornish history. In the books you had Doran's mother ruling Dorne, they've changed it to his father in the show. Not a very important part but it irks me. They've just completely ignored the whole Dornish inheritance aspect of it. Victarion and Aeron are cut I reckon. Might be too expensive to film the entire iron fleet. I'm hopeful about Euron though. Aegon is a gonner as well with no Arianne which is a shame as he looks very important in Winds.

They've done it a lot. They referenced Tysha multiple times only to ignore it when it mattered. Doesn't seem to be well planned which is quite poor given they've had the entire material available from day 1.

GRRM did make a point of it to specify that the books are very different from the show. That's how he brought up Jeyne at the comic con. I'll probably watch this season then skip the next one if the book isn't out.

It would barely effect the sales. The live ratings of the final few seasons would be insanity however given no one would know what is going to happen on a show where "anything" genuinely can happen, no one will want to be the person who read it on twitter.

win win either way for him.

I don't know. There are a lot if loyal book readers. If they boycott the show or books it'll have a huge impact.

The only way I see him releasing the books later is if he acknowledges they are taking the show in different directions and they should be treated as two separate entities.

I suppose a lot depends on HBO schedule but they seem pretty adamant on ending in 8 seasons if not not preferably 7.

I'm thinking they might have Ellaria cover up most of the Arianne shaped hole. She has basically nothing else to do in the books and they're probably thinking they've enough new characters to introduce. They could have her lead the Myrcella plot with more emphasis on revenge for Oberyn than on succession laws.

Why would anyone boycott either? If you are a book reader, you're watching the show too and will read the books afterwards to get the endings to plenty of subplots that aren't remotely touched upon in the series(and more look set to be dropped given the castings), and if you're a series watcher.....yeah nothing to lose here, in fact they can act a big smug for a change knowing they can't be spoiled....plus some of these will read the books too, which is where he's picked up endless sales over the past 4 years, more than he had had previously.

Loyal readers will read the books, no matter what. The ending might be same but it's clear now that the way they reach that ending is going to change massively.

GRRM giving up everything is a good sign though. Maybe he's finally realised the trouble he is in

noooo, was looking forward to see her. Cant remember trystanne at all

Quentyn was a pointless character in the books really, no loss there.

All the Sand snakes but no Arianne however :(
