Hassler box to box? What is this madness?! Surely Boban's playing the deep role with Hassler floating in behind the strikers and not vice-versa?

Walter Zenga – One of the world’s truly great goalkeepers. Walter Zenga, for a number of years at the end of the 1980s and early 1990s was widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world, in the middle part of a successful period of more than a decade that he spent at Inter Milan. During this time, Zenga would win a Scudetto and 2 UEFA Cups in 1991 and 1994, making 328 appearances in the process for the Italian greats. Zenga was IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper for three years running: 1989, 1990 and 1991 as well as being awarded UEFA Goalkeeper of the year in 1990. In 1990 he led the Italian team to a third-place finish in the World Cup during which he set a record of five consecutive clean sheets, and a total of 518 minutes without conceding a goal, a record still standing today.

Leonardo – A World Cup winner, a wonderful, versatile player capable of playing left back, left midfield or as playmaker. With Milan he became a prominent part of a star-studded lineup.

Sergio Porrini – No nonsense defender capable of playing right back or centre back. He had a hugely successful time with Juventus, winning 2 Serie A titles, a Coppa Italia and a Champion’s League in his four years with them.

Aldair – Another World Cup winner. One of the greatest Brazilian defenders ever because of his elegant style, his leadership qualities and his longevity. Aldair was stylish and concrete at the same time, a centre back that made everything easy for his team mates. He played over 400 games for Roma who duly retired his no.6 shirt when he retired. In 2008 his legend status was confirmed when he received the Golden Foot award.

Roberto Ayala - Regarded as one of the best central defenders of his generation, Ayala captained the Argentine national team for more matches (63) than anyone else. He played in three World Cups and made a total 115 international appearances. He won the Serie A title in 1999

Edgar Davids - Edgar Davids was the great powerful dynamo midfielder, was noted for his tireless running, uncompromising tackling and excellent agility. He was rated as one of the best defensive midfielders of the world during the late 90s. Davids also liked to support attacking game with his technical abilities honed from being a former freestyle football and his great acceleration. Marcello Lippi once described him as "my one-man engine room."

Paul Gascoigne – In one word the man was a genius! His time in Italy was ruined by first breaking a cheekbone and later breaking a leg. But when he was fit Gazza was excellent. A great all round player who mixed attacking flair with tenacious tackles.

Atillo Lombardo – One of the true legends of Italian football, Atillo was an outstanding midfielder whether in the centre or on the right wing. Playing over 300 games in Serie A Atillo won everything possible, being one of the only players to win Serie A with 3 different clubs. He won 3 Serie A titles, 3 Coppa Italia’s, the Champions’ League, Uefa Cup, Super Cup twice and the Supercoppa Italiana 3 times.

Ariel Ortega - Well known for his pace, ability and skills from dead ball situations, ball trickery, clever body feints and lobbed shots. At his prime he was one of the best dribblers in the world. He was given the no.10 shirt for Argentina making 87 apps and scoring 17 times.

Pierluigi Casiraghi - A great all round striker for club and country. He won 2 Uefa cups and 2 Italian Cups with Juventus and Lazio. He was a member of the great Italian team that got beat in the final of the 94’ World Cup.

George Weah – He needs no introduction. One of the greatest players ever to play the game. He was the FIFA World Player of the Year, European Footballer of the Year, and African Footballer of the Year. He was also named African Footballer of the Century. A great striker known for scoring spectacular goals.

Should be a good match-up tomorrow lads. The KM AldoRaine one is a good pairing as well. Whoever wins, do they get to pick one or two players from the losing team?

Should be a good match-up tomorrow lads. The KM AldoRaine one is a good pairing as well. Whoever wins, do they get to pick one or two players from the losing team?

It has always been one. However, it could be a good idea to have two picks after winning every game in this one, as there is quite some room of improvement in some teams and would make the final matchups very feisty.

I explained that last night only. No one will pick any players till all the games are over. Once we decide the best loser, the rest will pick and he will play against you. Say it's me and I lost to KM. Now, I will play you. If you win, whichever one out of you and KM won by a bigger margin would pick first. If I beat you, KM would first pick players from you as he beat me, and then I will pick.

In case it's not clear, I will tell it again when the time comes. But no one picks any player till all the games are over.

Also, if we are picking two players, there can be another system. Say KM and you are picking players from me, and KM is going first. Then instead of him picking twice and then you picking twice, we could have him picking one, then you picking twice and then him picking his second player, to make it fair.

Luca Marchegiani - Easily one of the top 5 goalkeepers of Serie A 90's, he played over 200 times in the decade, for Torino and then Lazio, to whom he moved to for a world record fee for a goalkeeper. He also played 3 games during Italys 1994 World Cup in which they reached the final and is considered a key contributor to Lazios rising success in the second part of the 90s.

Robert Jarni - Arguably one of the greatest left fullbacks of all time, he had spell at Bari, Torino and Juventus in the 90's and played all 7 games at the 98' World Cup, helping Croatia to their best ever 3rd place finish. Bags of pace, precise crossing and passing, and great attacking instincts make him not only reliable at the back, but dangerous going forward, always likely to provide an assist.

Lorenzo Minotti - Captain of Parma throughout a lot of the 90's and one of the clubs greatest ever players. Unflappable and resolute at the back with very good technical ability. Assured and aggressive but was never allowed to make a huge impact on the national team, because of the abundance of quality they had in his position with Baresi, Costacurta etc but was picked as cover for them during the 1994 World Cup, underlining his quality.

Nestor Sensini - Not only a great defender but also a great footballer, exemplified by his ability to play in midfield, something he did for Argentina in 1990 World Cup final, Sensini played in Italy throughout the 90's, mainly for Parma so he and Minotti know each other well. His class and assurance on the ball, and know how and intelligence without it will be a key advantage for my team

Javier Zanetti - Needs no introduction, one of, if not the greatest right wing backs of all time. Could attack and defend with equal ease and untold class, he joined Inter in 1995 and became club captain just over two years later. He also won the Uefa cup with them in 1998 having scored in the final.

Matias Almeyda - Powerful defensive midfielder who played for Lazio between 1997 and 2000. He combined tremendous strength and determination, with fantastic tackling and intelligent positional sense. He had drive and technique in abundance too making him a vital member of my midfield. He was voted best player of Serie A in 1999 and won the league and cup double in 2000.

Christian Karembeu - A very intelligent, technical player who has played as a defensive midfielder and sometimes as a sweeper or full back in his career. He played for Sampdoria between 1995-97 and left a year before winning the World Cup with France. He will be a key tool in getting the ball from the defence to my creative players and also in helping quash particular threats from opposing teams, his defensive attributes and experience will certainly be useful when doing so.

Zinedine Zidane - In my opinion the best, most consistent and most joyous time of Zidanes career was enjoyed at Juventus, where one of the greatest players of all time became a star. Ballon Dor winner in 98', and Fifa world player of the year in 98' and 00'.

Enzo Francescoli - A highly skillful and elegant passer, dribbler and goalscorer he played 100 times for Cagliari in the early 90's. He was Zidanes hero when growing up and you can certainly tell why, being an expert in the same role. Though not at this absolute peak in the 90's, his quality was still there in abundance along with experience and maturity, a good balance with a young Zidane in the team. To those that may question his ability at this stage of his career, here is a video depicting his time at Cagliari, and another of him scoring a bicycle kick at Ortegas testimonial, one of 4 goals, aged 50, demonstrating how well he aged.

Faustino Asprilla - Played for Parma between 92-96, and was named 6th best footballer in the world by Fifa in 1996. A strong and ferocious striker, with great technical ability and flair, he could provide a strong goal threat whilst contributing in other ways, running channels and providing creative outlets.

Fillipo Inzaghi - A legend of the Italian league and one of its greatest ever goal getters, Inzaghi would try and usually suceeed with any possible way of getting on the scoresheet. Blessed with touch, composure, technique, intelligence and lethal finishing, he is certainly one of the best strikers in this draft. He is second to Raul in the all time Champions league goalscoring charts, illustrating his propensity to score in huge games. He was Capocannoniere in 96' and won the Serie A in 97' with Juventus. He and Zidane have displayed that they work together brilliantly.

Substitue:

Daniel Fonseca - Uruguayan forward who played in Serie A throughout the 90's, sometimes from the wing and other times in the centre. Great skill and technique, he was more than capable of dropping deep to link up with the midfield but still managed a 1 in 2 goal ratio at his peak. Has been regarded as a 'super sub' later in his career when playing for Juventus so will be very effective if brought on too.

This is my team in general and descriptions of my players.

I will PM Aldo with my formation for my fixture with lifaboy along with a tactical description when I get a chance.

Then instead of him picking twice and then you picking twice, we could have him picking one, then you picking twice and then him picking his second player, to make it fair.

I like this idea. So, more great players would still be in the game, later on.

Ideally it should be that, but if someone sub,its their team before the ones who have their game scheduled, we can also go with that fixture.

P.S. I would be on a 10+ hour flight this Sunday night, so things may get delayed by a few hours.

Damn it! zlatan_ish is one of the 12 teams I want to avoid.

EDIT: When on the poll said "This poll will close on 7th September 2012 at 05:10". That 5:10 is PM or AM? sorry for the silly question, as different time zone and such reason.

He was a very powerful striker who had nothing but destruction and goals on his mind,His most notable move was in 1996 when spotted by Marcello Lippi, he made 23 appearances in his first season in the league scoring 8 goals, aswell as 8 goals in 10 Champions League appearances, forming a devastating partnership with Alen Bokšic in which they were joint top goalscorers for Juventus also reaching the 1997 Champions League Final. Tactics:

Very Strong Spine Consisting of Buffon-Baresi-Deschamps, 3 Captains who have led there teams to Champions League and/or World Cup glory, So suspect this team to be very organised with the strong personlities marshalling the team, also Carrera,Montella and Katanec have gone on to be Managers so very strong personalities in every area with leadership skills all over the squad.

The Defense is a Bossed by Milan legend Franco Baresi who is the king-pin of this team who will take the ball out of defense and start off any offense this team generates while also being fully devoted to his defensive duties. Massimo Carrera can also play centreback and slot in to CB whenever Baresi
decideds to take the ball out of the defense or put in a shift in midfield. Carrerra and Pancaro are both very versitile fullbacks who love to join in the attack but will rarely be caught out miles up the pitch. Taribo West is the enforcer of this team who will break up anything in his path.
Also whenever my team is under pressure at the back Srecko Katanec can also play at centreback so the Yugoslavian international can provide a massive presence in midfield aswell as defense whenevermy team are under attack

The Midfield marshall is Didier Deschamps the 2 time Champions League Captain and Captain of Frances1998 World Cup winning team, Deschamps will pull all the strings in the midfield with his main duties being collecting the ball from the defense and getting it to the strikers or passing to Nakata in space in the oppositions half, he was also not shy of putting in a challenge himself and can assist in attack and defense.Srecko Katanec is the "Claude Makelele" of my team, his job is not to pass the half way line and retain the ball
for my team aswell as assist the defense when the opposition are on the attack. Nakata's job is very much similiar to Shinji Kagawa's role for Man Utd, pick up the ball from the midfield/fullbacks and turn and run at the defense
and provide threw-balls whenever possible to which-ever striker is in the best space.

The Attack screams 1 word "goals".You have Christian Vieri who is the big powerful striker who will attempt to boss defenders and is not shy in coming back and assisting the midfield when needed. But whenever he gets infront of
goal his duty is to stick it in the back of the net, He is well known for being able to score all sorts of goals.Alen Boksic is very much the inside-forward of the team who is capable of scoring stunning goals with both feet, His
partnership with Christian Vieri at Juventus which made it to the Champions League final in 1997 will prove vital with the familiarity of the strikeforce. Vincenzo Montella is the goal-machine of the team who may appear on the
team-sheet as a wide forward but will swap place with Christian Vieri regularly to spearhead the attack and get on the end of any crosses from the other forwards or stick leg out to knock in any threw-balls.

Team This is the One

abDiOAOadM.jpg

Cláudio Taffarel
The 1994 World cup winning keeper featured in Serie A for 5 years at Parma & Reggiana. He helped Parma to victory in the Italian Cup in 1992 and the UEFA Cup winners’ Cup in 1993. Height 6ft Serie A caps 100.

Alessandro Costacurta
‘Billy’ as he was affectionately known, was part of the famous defensive backline of the dominant Milan machine, winning 7 Scudetto’s and the European Cup an astonishing 5 times! A favourite of both Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello in the 90’s when he peaked. Costacurta was a legendary one club man, and formidable player. He’ll be my lynchpin at the back. Height 6ft. Serie A Caps 458.

José Antonio Chamot
The strong Argentine centre half starred for Lazio among others in the 90’s. Good in the air, he compliments my back line, fitting in well next to Costacurta by being left footed and capable of playing left back if need be. Height 6ft 1in Serie A caps 130.

Bruno N’Gotty
A French defender of Cameroonian descent, N’Gotty was for a time at least, at the top of the European game. A big powerful unit who could play as a centre half or right back. Won the Serie A title in 1999 with AC Milan under Zaccheroni, playing the same role as he will for me. He’ll feature on the right of the back 3 to help cover Lentini. Height 6ft 2in.

Gianluca Zambrotta
The World Cup winning full back can play a multiple of positions, left back, left midfield or right back. His Serie A career began in 1997 and took off immediately. One of the hottest properties at the time, Juventus spent a reported £15m towards the end of the 90’s to land him. Disciplined in defence & full of energy to get forward, Zambrotta is the perfect modern day wing back.

Gianluigi Lentini
In the early 90’s Lentini was the Italian sensation. A strong, quick right winger, he made a huge impact early on in his career. His form for Torino was so good that in 1992 the dominant AC Milan broke the world record to buy him for £13m. He remained the most expensive player in the world for 4 years. Sadly, Lentini’s career was badly affected by a serious car crash and the player never fully recovered.

Frank Rijkaard
A legend of the European game, the Dutchman was transformed by Arrigo Sacchi from a central defender into an outstanding holding midfielder. From this position he became the prototype for the defensive midfielders of the future. He won Serie A twice & the European Cup twice, scoring the winner in the final vs. Benfica. Rijkaard was one of the real super powers of the era. He will be my Captain & will look for him to help dominate the midfield battle in this draft, as well as offer defensive support to Lentini. Height 6ft 3in. Serie A Caps 142.

Vladimir Jugović
The Serbian midfielder was a star for Sampdoria, Juventus Lazio & Inter Milan in the 90’s after graduating from the famous Red Star Belgrade set-up. Renowned for his vision, technique, and ability in the air, he won the Champions League twice in his career. He is regarded as one of the finest players that Serbia has ever produced and one of the best midfielders of his generation. Both footed but played majority of his football on the left side of midfield so is well suitel to my formation. Will offer the team great ball retention. Serie A caps 202.

Juan Sebastián Verón
In the 90’s Veron was widely regarded as one of the best midfield play makers in world football. He won the UEFA cup with Parma & the Schudetto with Lazio among other titles. His vision and passing ability was exceptional. He will be pulling the creative strings in my team, fashioning chances for the attack, giving resonance to the forward play. Height 6ft 1in. Serie A caps 180.

Jurgen Klinsmann
Jurgen the German won 108 caps for his country in a long and successful career. One of Europe’s premier strikers in the 90’s he joined Inter Milan in 1989 just before winning the World Cup on Italian soil. He won the Supercoppa and UEFA Cup with the club. A top rate finisher, always capable of a goal but also capable of the spectacular. Good in the air, Klinsmann was a complete striker. With his fitness, work rate and mobility he put in some great performances for Inter when at times in a negative/defensive league he was played alone up front and kept an entire back 4 busy all on his own. He’ll be my number 9 and main goal threat.

Fabrizio Ravanelli
The “white feather” was one of the main men in a successful, dominant Juventus team during the mid 90’s forming a formidable partnership with Vialli. He won the Serie A title & a Champions League title scoring a special goal in the final vs. Ajax. During this period he was seen as one of the best forwards in Europe. He’ll be playing up front with Klinsmann and with his movement, ability in the air and long range shooting, will be a major threat to defenders. At 6ft 2in he was a big unit. Serie A caps 369.

Sub – Luis Oliveira
The Brazilian forward (played for Belgium) stayed with Cagliari & Fiorentina for the best part of the 90’s. Skillful, fast and offers plenty of flair off the bench.

Team Tactics. Costacurta marshalling the back line, Lentini & Zambrotta offering pace & width, Rijkaard controlling the midfield, Jugovic with the technical brilliance, Veron pulling the creative strings, the team will open opponents up and control games. Both Klinsmann & Ravanelli were excellent in the air so will look to supply plenty of crosses into the box. My team is a physical one. Lot’s of players over 6ft. Gary Neville mentioned in his autobiography that the Juventus team in the mid 90’s was the toughest he ever faced due to their size and strength. This formation was used to win the league by AC Milan under Zaccheroni but I can also switch to the classical 442 formation that Sacchi used in the early 90’s.

Not relevant to this draft but interested in your opinions lads...

Veron so high up the pitch? For me you have three midfielders with defensive mind and not that attacking, makes me feel like your defense will be tough to crack with that 5-3-2 but your attack isn't brilliant. Or maybe I'm misjudging Veron's attacking capabilities?

Which team do you think looks best.

I can bring in one more player so it's whether I should bring in another centre mid like Song to turn it into a 433 because Modric-Ince is too weak, bring in Kewell to add a bit more attacking impetus or stick with the 442 with Anderton on the right and Duff on the left.

Veron in his Samdoria and Lazio days was a creative central midfielder. He didn't have much if any defensive duties. Like you say, my attack isn't the best in the draft so I need to make up for that with Veron pushed forward slightly to get the best out of his passing. And the wing backs will be important, getting crosses into the box.

Serie A is a defensive league. Being tight at the back is the most important thing so Jugovic and Rijkaard will screen my back line well hopefully.

The first one in the blue IMO. The midfield of Song-Ince and Modric is a great midfield. Kewell and Duff I never really rated, but of the both I'd prefer Kewell out of the two. Also surprised that Lee Sharpe hasn't been taken yet.

Kewell was sensational at Leeds at the beginning of the 00s and Duff was fantastic for Blackburn when fit, you're just judging them based on their time at Liverpool and Chelsea. That's the thing with Duff, his performances over the last 5 years will be too fresh in the memory but injuries just took away that agility/pace and he's got none of the penetration he used to have. Never really rated Kewell?

Go for Kewell over Duff man, both of them failed to perform for some reason when they got their big moves. That's why it's natural to doubt them.

Does anyone else agree Duff failed to perform for Chelsea? I thought he and Robben were a lethal combination in the first two seasons when they were both on the pitch.

I don't think Modric-Ince is too weak. The first one with Song next to them looks great, just a shame it means Zola isn't in his best position, more central. But maybe I'm wrong, could Zola move around, drifting wide?

Lee Sharpe is a good shout. Amazed he hasn't gone yet. Maybe pick him up and drop Duff. Zola on the right.

In reality, I'd probably say the grey one is the best, with Kewell & Duff wide, who were both amazing for Leeds and Blackburn/Chelsea. I'm just not sure if voters will remember them like that though. Lee Sharpe would be a vote winner.

That handsome bastard Kewell was sensational during his Leeds day. He scored some fabulous goals, while displaying good skill with the ball. I was prematurely excited when we were linked with him.

Sharpe peaked before the Premier League began and after '95 you can't really say much for him. He still had some dazzling runs of form when he got the chance (had that run of scoring 4 league goals in a row) but he was still essentially a backup to Giggs and Kanchelskis. A 442 with Sharpe on one side and Anderton on the other works nicely in terms of balance though.
