It is footballers at their peak though. Although there sure remains a question over whether Veron can cut it when not afforded space and time on the ball, something whoever plays Gio should target. Mind you, Veron didn't have Davids and Mendieta either side of him with us or at Chelsea.

Brwned's Vialli-Hughes peaks were 5-10 years (more like 10 than 5) before these guys peaks. That can make all the difference.

In fairness to Veron, he played like one of the best midfielders in the world from around 1997 through to 2000/01. A three-four year peak is no different to a lot of players already selected in the draft, such as Ronaldo (96-99), Riquelme (04-07), Rivaldo (98-01) or Del Piero (95-98).

When you put it in that context it is fair enough, I recall back to the mid-nineties when we all thought that Del Piero was the second coming which didn't last that long.

There was a wealth of similar players who are just better. It's only 3-4 teams who may still have a heed for someone like him TBH.
 
I got about 5, not sure its worth going with second rate ones though. Most of the teams that did well in the 60s version didn't have great width either.
 
The reason why I went for wingers to begin with really. That I got 2 of the 3 best and that it was slim pickens. Similar with left backs and AMC's.

Then we will have to open a transfer window and trade them for our hard-earned midfielders...

Actually, a transfer window at the end is not a bad idea if people want to balance their sides a bit.

Would have to be before groups are announced though.

In that case I think we need a larger squad, so for instance on our last run through we get to choose three players so if somebody wanted to take Seedorf off me for example I could demand two players in exchange.

Something similar happened to my Giggs picture earlier. In fact, it disappeared completely and for a while I wondered whether it was a mod banning hairy-chested nudity from the site.

Then I came off it and just posted it again.
 
I'd like the idea of a transfer window. But maybe we could do it at the half way point? If we do it at the end after everyone already has a formation and system picked out all trades would probably end up being like for like.

I have quickly mulled over it and discarded the idea (unless everyone else wants to have a go). The problem with it is it may completely change the balance of how you go about picking.

Firstly, it may lead to people hoarding a certain position (but then, if they can't trade them... imagine ending up with three keepers... you would fully deserve to get screwed though :lol:). A bit like City and strikers.

Second, you would keep picking without quite knowing whether you will be able to get SO and SO or not, which may completely shatter your chances further down the line when someone else has something better to offer.

It's an interesting variation that incorporates the wheel-and-deal element very realistically, but it may be too far down the line to bring it on now.

Thoughts?

It makes no sense having one at the end of the draft. Say I want a defensive midfielder from you. You aren't exactly going to want to trade a winger/striker for your only defensive midfielder. The only way I could get him would be to offer you my (worse) defensive midfielder in a like for like exchange, which would be turned down.

The system I propose is we have a 24/48 hour window at the half way point of the draft. Managers can register their interest in players and put up a list of players they're willing to let go. The advantage of doing it at the half way point being, you aren't restricted to go in for only like for like trades since you have 6 more picks still to come. I can trade Gattuso to someone who's short on defensive midfield in exchange for any other position, if I have a Gattuso replacement in mind I can pick later on.

Another aspect to consider is the possibility of trading two/three players for one. The player who does this gets extra picks at the END of the draft and the receivers picks get shortened accordingly. For example, I could trade you Gattuso and Scholes for Zidane. The draft would end one round early for you, while I would get one more round to pick the player I'm short.

Hoarding is unlikely since its very risky. I wouldn't want to trade with anyone who's hoarding players since it likely means his team is unbalanced and I'd like it to stay that way.

I like the idea, as you can tell. There's no compulsion to trade as well, so those who are happy with their team can easily just sit out.
 
Smart picking Ruud. I was going to post a comment, why not pair Ruud with Raul, when DEagle made the picks. They were a very good pair and neither of them were even in their prime.

A trade window is smart. Have it before the group draws are made.
