70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

I think most people in this draft would jump at the chance to take any one of Gio's midfielders, I don't think the same could be said about Stankovic good player that he was.

Quite simply, I would jump at the chance to swap entirely. He has a nice core going there.

Going back to the whole "Zidane obvious first pick thing", as I started listing players it struck me even more that there were bucketloads of world class creative midfielders who would 1. not go that quickly, 2. not be as difficult to build a team around as with Zidane.

Hindsight... making trolls look clever since discussion boards were created

Agreed, Gio's midfield is insanely

Still he's got a midfield consisting of three players that declined rapidly when aging. They all pretty much stopped being great around 27-28. Davids because of drugs. Veron because of England. Mendieta because of pressure or something. Very odd because all of them at age 25 were topping the billboard charts.

He needs a DM - Lampard in a 2-man field ....ugh

I assume it won't be a two-man midfield! But there are a lot of run-of-the-mill midfielders who will make that work. He is not needing someone particularly special added in there.

I don't need a DM. I've already got Petit. I just need a CM. I'm not about to go 4-4-2. It simply won't work as well with these kind of high quality teams against a 4-5-1. You need to have 2 hard working CM and 2 hard working wingers along with help from full backs to pull it off properly against a solid team with a 4-5-1.

Yup. That's why I opted for Petit now and didn't go for a CB. I have a list of about 40 MC's left. All of them WC veterans and CL competitors or champions.

That's ok, but I don't see Figo at his most effective as a wide man in a five man midfield with just one striker, nor even Giggs tbf

Which is one of my issues with it and the way people will see it is these players were still young when they were declining - Mendieta for instance went to Middlesbrough at 28 whereas Makelele went to Chelsea at 30 and so influential he was it led to the naming of the 'Makelele position' whilst Stankovic is still first choice at Inter will into his thirties and Seedorf is still first choice at Milan well into his thirties - all of whom are/were key players in winning titles for their entire careers.

He did okay for Real and Portugal. Giggs is Giggs. Doesn't matter if there are 1 or 2 strikers. He'll create something. Two top class players. 1 or 2 strikers is irrelevant how well they do. Tactics weren't as progressed as they are now. In no way does that mean that they wouldn't work. Simply means they'd get more freedom.

Yea. I understand only considering players in their prime in the 60's fantasy but with this game we've all seen the players play a lot. Mendieta declined like you wouldn't believe. I would in no way put him on the same pedestal as Pirlo, Scholes or even Rui Costa. Since we are talking about their prime they're all going to be pretty level so the deciding factor will probably either be personal preference or career consistency.

The best Finnish player ever and one of the best attacking mids of the 90's.

One of the most under-rated. Played for Liverscum but lets ignore that and remember what a superb midfeilder he was( those who have seen him)

Ralaks picks Baraja.

Great pick, a potentially very balanced midfield in there.

For me Mendieta from 1998-2001 or so reached a higher peak than Rui Costa and Scholes. It was best midfielder in Europe form. There's a strong case for Pirlo getting into that ballpark - prior to the real emergence of Xavi he would have been most people's favoured playmaker. Obviously the others win out in longevity, but the criteria focuses on the player's prime. And it wasn't just a purple patch over the course of a year as the lack of picks for Kevin Phillips, David Suazo, Luca Toni, Catanha and Salva testify.

Irrelevant.

From the first page's draft rules:

* In this competition, players are considered at the level when they were in their prime.

I know that. I said as much. Then I also made another point. Ignore that as well.

Yes, but surely longevity goes some way to influencing it? And let me say, regardless of rules, votes are all that matter and it will go some way to influencing people.

Otherwise we'd all just pick out one brilliant match from each player we pick and describe it as their prime. Then we'd get away with picking Seth Johnson and Michael Ricketts on the basis of the heights they once reached.

Mendieta was the nuts, not even just for one season but for 3-4. If you watched CL matches or La Liga around the time of the millennium he basically used to run games. I don't know what happened next - he moved from Valencia to Italy in a big money transfer and plummeted, then of course Middlesbrough

My next pick is Mehmet Scholl.

Jayvin's team is coming along very nicely. Very good, strong players though I can see them being underrated since they're not household names.

Surprised Ljungberg has lasted this long to be honest. He was quality at Arsenal for a while.
