70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

:D

Hurry up and pick - its been 30 minutes already, thats nearly a lifetime in this draft !

You've completely fecked me up, I had this nailed on and written in stone since Seedorf got picked.

OK, let's process this:

1) My midfield concept has been shot to pieces
2) The top players that are left either don't really fit or are a bit meh (2nd tier)
3) I'm pretty confident of two choices who would fit like a glove and no one will pick (appropriate players who will do the job very well but won't get me any votes). I can live with that ahead of taking on misfits.
4) Over the next loop whatever real quality there is at the back will be gone
5) I need to secure some options and flexibility for my midfield while not forgetting the need for real big name star quality

Originally my double whammy was going to be the two best fullbacks.
Then it was Guardiola and <see below>.
I've lost Guardiola and can live without Carlos as there are other very good options there.

IN MIDFIELD
An extremely verstaile player I can play all over the pitch (LB, box-to-box, linkup, wing, forward).
An imposing courageous and determined player, a natural winner who can take a game by the scruff of the neck.
I used to call him "a goalscoring Keano".

LUIS ENRIQUE MARTÍNEZ

AND FOR SOME REAL QUALITY AT THE BACK

feck CBs, they are all very much the same level from now on.

A man that needs no introduction bar what someone on the caf once said:

"The best right back in the world since he was any good at right back"

Cafu

Speak of the devil Rood!

Well you picked my 2nd choice so it is all good I suppose

I pick....

Rui Costa

Versatile class act, one of the best technical midfielders to date, comfortable going forward or in a defensive midfield role.

Ok, my turn... Robert Pires

You really are going for the EPL vote... Great pick, by far the best winger left and will work very well in your midfield.

Hopefully won't get you in the group stages :D

I went for the non-PL team last time and it didn't work out, also, by the late 90s, early 00s, the PL got much stronger compared to La Liga & Serie A.

fecking hell thats 7-8 in my list of next 10 options gone!!!

Imagine waiting for 30 picks to go. At this stage I'm not fussed though, I'll wait and see what is leftover next time around.

I'm very happy with Zanetti, but some formidable midfields shaping up and I will be able to contain/match but never beat them as it stands.

Zidane -Enrique - Guardiola - AN other (I had one set already) would have been outstanding though.

Gio's midfield is absolutely sensational. I'm slightly worried.

I'm thoroughly confused as to what to do next.

Same here, but I'm leaning towards grabbing a winger next, seems to be the position with the least amount of quality players to choose from.

Striker is definitely waiting till last. There's truckloads of them.

It would be interesting to see Cal?s EPL midfield clash with Gio's European one and test how biased the caf is. As it stands I would give advantage Gio, but the caf would probably disagree.

Oh dammit, dammit, dammit. This really sucks. You've stolen my meep meep!

After Giggs and Figo, he's the best winger in the comp, imo.

I suspect he is the one The Religion was going on about. Pires was the better footballer though I think.

Frank de Boer

Gio's midfield of Davids, Mendieta and Veron is incredible.

Undoubtedly Pires was a more cultured footballer with greater variety in his game. In saying that Overmars was a devastatingly effective winger in his mid-90s peak.

Is it? Three players most in England will remember for their spells at Man United, Middlesbrough and Tottenham.

I'm sure you're pretty wrong there. Most will them remember for how good they really were in their primes.

They were all, Davids and Mendieta especially, well past their peak by the time they moved to England.

Sure was, I remember him screwing us over in 98.

Pires just has much more in his locker, which is useful when you won't have a squad to begin with and currently have no visibility on what the teamsheet will end up looking like.

Agreed, I would expect people to be aware of this as well. It's not like in the 60s version when many just had a minor recollection of players already at Davids' Spurs stage.

People normally don't, when Brwned had Vialli - Hughes up front they thought of them from late in their careers as opposed to earlier.

Besides, the likes of Veron was great for a year or two, and apart from that, wasn't.
