70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

I think you'd win more votes for picking Puyol over Montero rather than Puyol over Brown, personally. I'm not sure what the general consensus is on Montero but I get the feeling maybe he doesn't have the same influence he deserves.

I think he was a thug. Most likely to get sent off after Materazzi of the players picked. It let's down his game. Had he had a better head on him he would have done better but Uruguayan mentality is a bit like that I guess. It's war to them.

Football is our way of going to war with Brazil and Argentina and have any chance of winning

Oh I understand that. I enjoy the Uruguayan national team. But split them up and Montero and Lugano and Dario Rodriguez and Sorondo don't look as nice. They play a bit differently with Uruguay. They're still hard but you don't want to get sent off and miss a game so they tone it down a bit.

What you are saying is:
1) They are in control and know how much to push it
2) At club level they push it more (probably because those around them don't share the burden as much!)

Montero is the player to get sent off the most times in Serie A yet Juve (who should know about defending) would reinstate him straightaway. He was special, anyone who followed him closely will tell you that.

Juventus fans voted Montero in their All-time First XI. Granted, it's the internet so old players may not get their dues (yet Scirea got the right CB slot) but he was still picked ahead of recent Italian greats like Cannavaro and Ferrara. The former probably not too popular because he buggered off to Real, but still... it's a hell of a lot of great defenders Juve have had over the years!

Winning the CL four times with three different teams, he sure has a place in my team. I'm well stocked, but you can never have too much quality in midfield.

Suggestion: would anyone be averse (Cold Boy in particular should be fine with this) to Dan being allowed to pick Emerson or any other Brazilian exiting the competition (eliminated team and not picked first by group winners)?

Why? I don't think Dan would want to pick Emerson ahead of Makalele.

Yeah I'll just take Makelele. Or Makelelinho as he will now be called

Maybe he did. After all, he picked a lot of dross to stay Brazilian. When he picked Serginho I assumed he was going to stick to the Brazilians (that's why I didn't suggest it earlier, I thought he had given up on them).

Was in two minds there, clearly the only othe top top class player to pick in this group. Issue was he probably wouldn't play against kps' 4-4-2 and I like Gattuso more as far as flexibility goes.

I suggest Claudinho Makelelinho

Cling Bak wins so the group finishes as:

1. Cling Bak
2. Brwned
3. Gio
4. Jayvin

I've updated the text a little bit

Thinking about tweaking my tactics a bit. People didn't like that there wasn't a man on Rivaldo, despite United playing that way every single time and no one has ever complained about that, so i left Petit to deal with Totti. Frings and Senna are similar players but Frings moves around more. Not sure thought if I'll change to this or keep my tactics as they were.

Considering changing my formation for the game vs Rood to something like this:

338945_Denmark.jpg

I don't see his right side as much of an issue so playing Solari as a wing back could be good there, problem is he haven't played much there - so might lose votes just due to that.

Van Bronckhorst in there to mark Rivaldo basicly, not giving him a chance. Salihamidzic is moved a bit back to counter the brilliance that is Roberto Carlos.

Neved will play a free role, Baraja will try to get to Guardiola and hassle him as soon as possible(when Rood is on the ball), similar to how teams approach Xavi.

What do you guys think?

You were both mulling over changes so once it's decided we'll go ahead.

Cling Bak wins so the group finishes as:

1. Cling Bak
2. Brwned
3. Gio
4. Jayvin

What a difference these final standings make. Cling has a wealth of defensive midfielders to improve his key weakness. Brwned misses out on first pick AND Overmars or McManaman as options (and how good would Henry be where he has Recoba!).

Ouch!, that must hurt.

Cling's epic win today could be one of those results where you just pick up a momentum that makes you unstoppable.

Missing out on Henry was something I'd planned for, getting second pick wasn't! Especially when we're after the same kind of player...it's fairly clear Cling will pick Vieira then I'll pick Davids, I think. Would've preferred it the other way round to some degree, but at the same time Davids offering that width on the left when I'm playing a narrow formation might not be the worst thing. Davids and Mendieta flanking Pirlo with Valeron at the other end does make quite a handy diamond. An Ayala-Ferdinand partnership's very tempting though...might steal him first before Cling gets his hands on him. Or Toldo behind that defence...

Had I qualified Henry and Ayala would have been the choices on the provision you'd have gone for Vieira first.

I think Cling should pick Davids and Mendieta myself. That leaves you picking up Vieira and Ayala.

Probably.

You will continue to have this problem with people not seeing any width in your team and not rating your front three as much as you do.

Must I pick one from Jayvin and one from Gio or can I do two from one of them?

Do I also get two picks myself before Brwned can choose?

Cheers Snow. You're not a Canadian rap artist by any chance, are you?

Right then, my picks:

Edgar Davids
Patrick Vieira

Cling, you pick one, then Brwned, then you again. You can pick from EITHER team, i.e. you could pick two from the same team.

OK, but the rules in the OP seem to suggest otherwise:

Group winner gets to pick one player each from the two eliminated teams to add to his squad, followed by the group runner-up's turn.

Yeah we had a mini discussion in the middle and changed the rules to balance things out. Otherwise the only teams in it are the group winners.

I don't intend to have a front three any more, Recoba's just not picking up the votes so we'll go for just Larsson and Shearer up front.

Right Cling assuming you pick Davids first then I pick Vieira. Or vice-versa. So feel free to go on ahead with your next pick.

I'll take Vieira.

My next pick is Davids or Mendieta.

Right so Cling's picks:

Vieira
Mendieta

My pick:
Davids

Options are Ayala, Claudio Lopez or Toldo, what do we think? Ayala too good to say no to?

Surprised Cling rates Vieira ahead of Davids, particularly with his shape. Oh well...

Your next pick would really be down to what your new team will look like. Maybe you need a certain type of player to make it work.

Looking at what you have now I would have gone for López. He is criminally underrated on here, I would suggest him but you may end up with a situation where neither him nor Recoba are getting you any votes.

Ayala is a sound choice, don't think people care much about keepers.

I wanted two from Vieira, Davids and Mendieta. All three were World Class, so it didn't bother me.

I'm a bit confused by the rules though. If I can have two from the same team my above tactic doesn't really work.

i.e. If you can't choose two from one team and I choose Davids, if Brwned takes Vieira I cannot have Mendieta.

The rules are simply not clear cut. They should be in the OP.

When do I need to post my team by?

Tuesday - Cold Boy v DanNistelrooy
Wednesday - kps88 v antohan
Thursday - Cling Bak v 2nd place in Group D (probably Snow)
Friday - Brwned v 1st place in Group D (probably Rood)

We can swap the first two games round if you need another day.

I do think Lopez gives this attack what it needs but I'm not sure three forwards is completely necessary in most games, and I agree I don't think he's that highly rated. If I get Ayala it means I could go either:

Then how should I go?

I still don't get the rush for Keane. Pires was a player you needed to get.

Anyhow, you also still have Wiltord, don't you. You would need to consider him an option on that left side.

You may need to put Beckham in a midfield three and play with no width as well. People don't like that though, which I find ironic as we had never-ending threads here with people wanting Becks in central midfield...

I think it will be important that whatever you come up with is clearly explained relative to Dan's team and how you propose to play the game.

If I start thinking long and hard I can see some merits in what you posted. I don't think anyone thinks as hard before voting. I wouldn't have voted for it as it is without a proper explanation, not ever.

The rules were changed and these changes widely agreed upon. It made the system fairer on second placed teams and removed the "one per team" barrier. It's all over the thread. I can't change the op, Cal posted that, but which part of this implied you couldn't get Davids and Mendieta?
