70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

Not sure that would be his best first choice TBH. kps probably won't pick him, same holds for kps getting Beckham who I think Cold Boy won't pick.

Very different shapes and weaknesses, only one player I think both will want and other than that they will split the spoils in a way that will suit them well.

kps88 will look very good after this! :nervous:

I'd still say you've got one of the strongest teams in the tournament. Not to mention Religion and Brain have some world beaters that are going out.

Keane's the best midfielder in the game, instant vote winner. I could well pick him for Keane - Scholes. :smirk:

A Keane-Scholes midfield would be an instant winner. However I'm liking the look of Hamann/Albelda-Keane-Ballack midfield.

If I were Coldboy the first thing I'd look at is a lack of width, a Pires-Beckham duo won't get him the best players but it would put Litmanen in his best position and he's not really lacking in centre mid or anywhere else in truth. Except Marcos I guess, but Abbiati and Ceni aren't great upgrades. Del Piero would definitely add something to the side but with Abidal not providing much in the way of width and Albelda-Hamann both not the most mobile midfielders it could leave them a bit static and lacking players to open up space.

Maybe Sergi? Something like this could work:

kps88's pretty limited with his options, he can't break up the Yorke-Cole partnership so he has to play 442, there's few good defenders to pick from so that only really leaves Beckham-Keane-Pires from what I can see. If he did manage to get the first two though, 5 out of the 6 treble winning first-team midfield and attack...he's onto a win there.

Roy Keane completes his 60 mil pound transfer to Cold_Boy's 11.

Albelda makes way.

On one hand I dread the thought. I can't see myself putting down your team and if I did everyone would be in a fit

On the other, it would be my chance to pick Keane! He is one of very few midfielders out there I would plump for. Although partnering him with "Keane with goals" as I call Luis Enrique would be spectacularly unfair on future rivals.

They even look alike! Play this on mute to avoid the cognitive dissonance of Keano speaking Spanish.

TBH, I think you have the stronger team in that group going forward once you make this couple of adjustments that will improve you no end. Worrying, but at the same time, promising good spoils for a victory

Differently from the World Cup having "easy routes", I guess here if you want to win it you are better off getting the best teams on the way.

And while I wrote that Cold Boy made his pick. Mixed feelings, was getting more giddy at the prospect of having him than terrified to face him.

I think you get picks 1 and 3 while Kps gets picks 2 and 4.

Only one player allowed from each team for each manager.

I think we agreed to let the 2nd spot have 2nd pick or else the group winners would become far too powerful compared to 2nd spots and we'd more or less already know who would be knocked out in the next round.

At least last draft it was ridiculous how big the difference was between the first two picks and the rest.

Anyway, I've kinda lost track in how far we are in the group stages, who are up next?

Yeah that was the plan I think.

Can someone clarify this? I was under the impression its two picks from either team?

It was one player from each team last time, it's two players from either team this time. It's one big pool of 24 players that you can choose from, and it goes Cold Boy-kps88-Cold Boy-kps88.

The first part is correct, the second is the same as last time around, and I guess is fair as it limits the impact of some groups being stronger than others.

Also, I think it should be made clear from now what the rule is with regards to picking new players. Does the top team get to pick two or is it alternated? Should be decided upon now before the rankings are decided.

I think we agreed the first and second placed teams alternate in picking.

1-2-1-2

So 1st place gets to pick 2 players from 3rd place and 2nd place picks from 4th place?

Nah i think both winning players get to pick players from either of the eliminated teams.

So I can pick 2 players from from any of the 2 eliminated teams?

Precisely.

This conversation was had three days ago. It's not rocket science Cold Boy.

Hmm. In two minds here. Want to get rid of Okocha playing wide left since many don't seem happy with that. Would Ljunberg be equally out of place on the left? I can't remember seeing him there for Arsenal.

Sorry, hadn't read the followups.

I'm easy, although there is merit in one from each team.

I know I will regret this, but it is obvious you should pick Pires, then Beckham.

Sod it, I pick Pires and hope Cold Boy picks who I think he will.

Edit: Antohan yep that was my thinking. I hope Cold Boy goes for Del Piero or Raul to replace Wiltord though. They would be much more effective further up the field than Beckham and would add some firepower.

I'm mystified as to why Cold Boy picked Keane first. He really has shite wingplay right now and Pires would be a vast improvement which was bound to force you to prioritise Beckham, letting him pick up Keane after that.

Bizarre :wenger:

Now the issue is he is still rubbish on the right...

Will he start evolving towards a new setup? He can probably beat Dan anyway but, again, won't get any right wingers off him.

Squeaky bum time.

He could still go Wiltord right, Del Piero left. If he manages to get past Dan, Cafu would be a good addition.

Most voters wouldn't have looked past the Keane-Scholes midfield.

Do people want this, or is anyone arsed? I just thought we'd already decided on picking two players from either team earlier and saw no reason to change. If people want to change then speak up, I've no preference. Just the constant changing about seems a bit much.

Nah crack on with the way it is. Purely my misguided efforts to get things moving on.

I pick Beckham

And immediately I have 100's of million pounds of sales of merchandise and huge transfer kitty ,thus.

It's ok now.

Fine, but as is happening here, one VERY good team with a weak link and a manager prone to meltdowns is being picked apart.

Your group will probably focus on Gio.

Group D is anyone's guess.

My group being weaker is a bit shite either way, so people being able to get two from very good teams is a bit lopsided.

But I agree it had been established earlier and no one had an issue then (it's my first fantasy, I'm working this out as we go along!).

Nesta is my obvious first choice but then there isn't much real top quality to improve my team. Dan had that in Ronaldo and Cafú, shame no one exploited the fact he only had Gilberto doing any defending in midfield!

Hehe. I was never going to pick Keane. Just a bit of a bluff to scare Cold Boy off Pires/Beckham.

No real obvious improvements left now. Will probably go with a fullback. The Barcelona combo of Sergi and Ferrer sounds good to me, but I'm not sure how many people are familiar with them or will recognise that over someone like Neville. I'll take some time to think about it. Not like we're in a hurry.

Mate tbh, I didn't even read the thread until I made my picks.

They had no connection to your bluff.

I got who I wanted.:D

I'm quite chuffed you at least got the other player I could want off you :D(Gattusso or Pires to beef up on wing options)

And no Scholes-Keane-Beckham which, in fairness, I would have banged on about the absence of Giggs there! That was a very balanced midfield, it had everything you could want a midfield to have.

Chaps, I'll be offline for a good few hours. If I pick first, which is looking likely, it is Nesta. No PMs with second pick, have no idea.

How much do people rate Puyol at right back? Attack-wise, I'm happy with Brown otherwise.

Good defensively. Offers nothing forward. I personally rate Brown. Also as a right back. He had a great season there when we won the CL last time.
Think Puyol instead of Ramelow and keeping Brown at right back would be better. I'v got Nowotny and I think most people rate the Germans CB's as meh. Don't know quite what to think of them.

That's the issue I have and why I go around asking this sort of stuff. I do rate Brown myself but, since there's not much midfield improvement I can make (other than Makelele, but not sure how useful he would be in the next game) I'm focusing on the defence which has been what I've had more heavily criticised.

I just wonder if people read Puyol-Nesta-Montero-Candela, would they be more impressed than Brown-Nesta-Montero-Candela?

Nesta is better. He's also the safer choice. There was just recently a thread on how good Puyol is. Some don't rate him at all. So putting him at right back would not be ideal I think.

Yeah, I saw that. A few people had a go at him, Barca making him look good, going to ground easily, etc. But the vast majority just went "X caps, a zillion games for Barca, captain, 3 CLs, 1 WC...", etc.

On that basis he is phenomenal!
