50s Retro Football Fantasy Draft

You've got the full game of Liverpool - Independiente and a 12 minute video of their Copa Libertadores run in the previous season on youtube, there's a surprisingly decent amount of stuff on there.

Bear in mind Bochini was 30 then, it's roughly 1976-80 that he was in his pomp, although it's hard to put dates on that sort of player. Class is permanent.

Same can be said of a few players from the former Yugoslavia/USSR which are still unpicked and may well remain thus!

I guess. USSR featured more in tournaments but I'm at a loss to pinpoint a single Yugoslavian player from that decade.

feck, the more I think about it the clearer it is that Gio will gazump me :(

Same can be said of a few players from the former Yugoslavia/USSR which are still unpicked and may well remain thus!

I guarantee there'll be at least two more picks from that USSR side to go along with Blokhin, and I'd be surprised if one of the Yugoslavs doesn't get snapped up. The same should apply for the Poland team too with restrictions placed on them moving outside their home country pre-80s so much of that '74 side that finished 3rd didn't get a chance to show their skills at a higher level on the club stage. I'd still expect a couple of their players to be picked as well.

I'd happily pick the remaining 6 players needed for my team from those three countries actually!

Who'll be on here around midnight UK time so I can PM them my picks?

I certainly won't be around by then. Hopefully Gio turns up soon

Cha Bum Kun

Sorry lads been at training. I'll take Cha Boom.

I'm having Juanito, Real dribbling legend. Surprised he hasn't been picked but his familiarity with Stielike offers the option of a midfield 3 with Socrates or I can also move him forward

OK, that's fine Nani. However I may go to bed myself in the next couple of hours. If that happens I'll PM both our picks to IL or Antohan

Manfred Kaltz

Ruud Gullit said:
He played for Hamburg in the ’80s and was famous for his Bananenflanken [banana crosses]. His crosses had so much spin on them, they were so difficult to defend, the strikers were scoring for fun. He was also one of the first attacking right-backs. He almost invented the idea of the wing-back, long before Cafu and Roberto Carlos came on the scene. He was very good at set-pieces too.

In total he played in 581 Bundesliga games for Hamburger SV,[2] to this day remaining the second greatest total of an individual in Bundesliga history. An expert in penalties, the Hamburg fan-favourite scored 53 of his 76 goals from the spot, a record in the Bundesliga.

An absolutely key part of the most successful Hamburg side of their history, including helping them get to two European Cup finals (winning one) and win consecutive league titles. A mainstay in the German defence for over a decade too.

 Well then we can call it a truce!

See you tomorrow morning

PM me, by all means. Let's get this moving.

Some very nice picks I mulled over at length. There's actually so much quality I feel like a tit insisting on narrowing teams.

BTW, have we settled whether we gor for 4 teams and quarters or 2 and semis?

Nope, nothing sorted yet. Just send a PM to everyone in the draft, otherwise we'll never get it sorted as most people will miss it when they glance through this thread looking at the picks rather than the discussions.

I prefer the two semis, personally. Not particularly fussed on it though.

OK, assuming Poloroid turns up soon (he seems to do so about this time each night) and Brwned stays up for a bit, I am going to PM both mine and Nani's picks to Antohan (if nothing changes within the next 20 mins as I'm going to bed.)

Yeah, I wish he'd hurry up so I can quickly be put out of my misery. There's six players I have lined up, for the next two positions I want to fill. I just know all six will be gone by the time of my next pick.

That's when we'll see a monumental breakdown. Hell hath no fury like a TDon scorned!

Sorry for the delay, my picks - Bonhof and Susic

2 or 4 qualifiers?

We should get it decided before groups are drawn. PMing at Brwned's request (reply on thread).

Option 1

  • Four teams qualify from each group
  • They pick one each from the spoils in reverse draft order
  • 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd cross-group knockout (i.e. no repeat games, adjusts for relative group strength)
  • Each winner picks two from beaten team
  • Semis: winners of 1st vs. 4th against winners of 2nd vs. 3rd matches
  • Again pick two/four from defeated team
  • Final
Pros: adjusts for "Group of Death" scenarios, we still have a month before football starts!

Cons: 4 games longer

Option 2

  • Top two from each group go to semis
  • Pick two from pool of spoils in reverse order
  • Semis
  • Pick two/four from defeated team
  • Final
Pros: shorter, teams arguably get much stronger picking two from the entire pool than from a limited pool and knockouts (i.e. less likely a great player is left behind because the winner doesn't need it).

Cons: People could lose interest very quickly and turn the last couple of group games into dead rubbers.

Please reply 1 or 2 and whether the post semi-final pick should be 2 or 4.

That is 1/2, 1/4, 2/2 or 2/4

1/2
option 1, well because when the matches start, we don't want it to end too quickly. I've went for 2 picks from defeated teams, well because I don't to see people being able to drastically change their teams. The team we select in the draft should be more or less the team we take to the final, IMO.

Sorry for the delay, my picks - Bonhoff and Susic

Bugger, I was hoping Bonhoff may last enough to have him as a sub/tactical variation option

:annoyed:

Is that Pape Susic from PSG you are talking about? Hadn't even crossed my mind. There I was with about 30 decent player options left, and more keep cropping up...

Crustanoid's pick

My pick is Left sided defender / midfielder, Rafael Gordillo, another Real legend

177-Rafael+GORDILLO+Panini+R%25C3%25A9al+Madrid+1989.png

Own comment: he has a funny name which basically means "Fatty" and he looked like he had eaten all the pies indeed. But boy could he play football... I've seen few attacking fullbacks/wingbacks with such ability, touch and close control.
