Was set on getting a Bessonov-Demyanenko partnership myself early on, Kaltz was too good to turn down though. Bessonov not only dominated the right flank for years, he won MOTM playing in centre mid against Graeme Souness and co.

Fillol.

Reinaldo, they said that if he and Careca had have been available for the 82 world cup, Brazil would not only have walked the tournament, but could have claimed the title of most talented Brazil tournament squad ever.

Didn't know much about him myself, but from what I've read he was very much revered. They even called him 'The King' which was also a play on the first three letters of his name being the word for king in Portuguese.

my final outfield pick is Americo GALLEGO, 73 caps for Argentina

as for the discussion concerning how the tournament should be organised, I let you guys decide

Willy Van Der Kerhof - one of the key parts of Holland's seventies team

netherlands-willy-van-de-kerkhof-122-panini-1994-world-cup-story-sonric-s-football-sticker-45473-p.jpg

I needed someone both skilful and versatile to fit my other midfielders and provide different options for formations. However Van Der Kerhof is far more than a cog in a system and had considerable individual merit, making the FIFA 100 list of all time great players

Btw in the newbies we're playing a draft in which every player is eligible but you can only have one person from one country in your team. Would you guys be interested in something like this after this game?

Why not? There was also the World Cup one...

Good idea. I'd like to see one which pits teams from different eras against each other at some point too.

Such as

2 teams of players born 1955-59
2 born 1960-64
2 born 1965-69
2 born 1970-74

and so on....

Might be a complicated draft process, but it would offer something different to what we've done before

This was my analysis very early on. My team needs a defender with:

  • Pace => check
  • Good height and heading => check
  • Reading of the game => check
  • Composure => check
  • Passing/distribution, both short and long to provide an outlet and build up play => check

DARIO PEREYRA

Aged 17 he made his first team debut for Nacional as a midfield playmaker.

Aged 18 he made his debut for the national team.

Aged 19 he was captain for both club and country.

Aged 20 he was bought by Sao Paulo for what was then their all-time transfer record.

Him playing abroad put an end to his international career (until he was oddly picked as a reserve midfielder ten years later by a totally clueless and domestic league-centred manager).

There was trouble with paperwork so Real Madrid came calling to “rescue him”. He turned them down, the admin was sorted three months later, Sao Paulo won the Brazilian Championship for the first time in their history but injuries meant he was inconsistent for the first couple of years.

Aged 23, during an injury crisis, he was played at CB and he made the position his own. Oscar was bought to partner him and they formed the best CB partnership in the league.

Tele Santana, aware of his lack of international footie tried to convince him to change allegiance and play alongside Oscar for Brazil in 1982. A foreigner asked to play for Brazil, scandalous, but no one had an issue as it made sense. His explanation: “if he were Brazilian he would be the best defender in our history just behind Domingos da Guia”. Must have been undisputable, otherwise it would be poor man-management on Oscar! Pereyra declined the offer.

He won Placar Magazine’s “Bola de Prata” three times. Out of all the Brazilians picked so far only Zico won it more times (4).

Sao Paulo All Time XI, who are the CBs?

No World Cups, no Ballon d’Ors, but he had the virtue of mixing leadership, organizational skills, strength, speed and graft with the sort of football brain and technique that would be expected from a playmaker turned into a CB.

The draft would probably be quicker as those picking in each era would take turns rather than wait for those not picking from the same pool :p

Mind, I would get bored stiff if people start banging on about differences in conditioning, pitches, balls, etc.

We'd have to have a rule that says: all we're bothered about is the 90 minutes on the pitch - can those XI players, playing at their best beat the other XI players, regardless of all those details. I think it would be fun, and keeps in the spirit of these drafts by boiling it down to the strengths / weakness of the players

Or winners from 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's drafts in one a final tournament!

No offence, but option 1 is such a cop out! There's only 10 teams entering, so you're playing an entire group phase to get rid of 1 team from each group. I think voters will get a bit bored.

Good team. I especially like your front six.

Got a left-back in mind?

Yes. Solid. Not spectacular. But can defend.

The problem with my team is the reliance on Cueto and Pezzey. Both excellent players. Pezzey will sweep the defence and bring the ball out. And Cueto had excellent ball control skills and was a great creator. But they aren't the most known names.

Going to start catching up on some of the players I know little of, can anyone suggest a Peru match that best showcased their talent? Likewise or Belgium, Austria etc. Basically if anyone can point me to some games of their lesser-known players I'll give 'em a watch.

I'm curious as to how your 523 would IL, it's certainly interesting to see two wing backs and two wingers line up together, and with two attacking centre mids (even though Breitner was a converted left back I could never see him holding). I'd consider sticking Passarella or Breitner at left back and bringing in another centre mid, personally.

Depends on the voters. There will be plenty of "lesser known" names on every team, such is the age of the players.

The team write-ups might be more important than ever this time.

I love watching Belgium at '82 and '86. They impressively turned over Argentina in their opening game of Spain '82, but probably performed better in Mexico.

Their last 16 game against Soviets is a classic and must watch and they were good against Spain in the quarters, too (went through on pens).

I considered sticking Breitner there. But he scored quite a few from midfield once he started playing there. I can see him do the 1-2 punch, but this time with Rossi. :D

As far as Cueto, he was called the poet with the left foot. Played around the center and the ball stuck to his feet. Exquisite vision and pass. you can see these glimpses.
