50s Retro Football Fantasy Draft

It's insane how you lot know so much about 50's football. I'm googling each and every one of the names and reading about them. :D

Age...

You can also wait until everyone is done and each of us posts all their researched quotes and vids... a lot less work and it will all invariably be worth watching :smirk:

I am beating myself over picking Rossi over Schuster. I thought strikers would run out. Rossi was quite an okay player but was a terrific fox in the box and big tournament player.

Both good shouts. Ceulemans is one of those players who was absolutely one of the best at the time but is not often mentioned when people talk about the era

Cuellemans is very underrated. He was a quality player in a decent Belgium team at the time.

Technically, it's 70's and 80's football. ;)

I don't think it's that insane.

Great pick IL, I've been carrying my pick and Conti as the two options for this round and am mystified as to how they lasted this long.

Allan Simonsen

Given the type of player he was, injuries made him a shadow of his former self in the 80s, but he really was something special. For those g:D:Dgling stuff:

Cuellemans is very underrated. He was a quality player in a decent Belgium team at the time.

I do remember him (and Belgium) being quite good. He even scored against Uruguay in 1990 and was an absolute nightmare throughout the game, but that was at the end of his career. I had him listed, but only have minor recollections of him at his prime so wasn't clear how exactly I would use him TBH.

I don't think I've ever watched any Belgian football and for the national team I always seemed to catch them losing and not in their good games.

I'm sure Polaroid will enlighten me as we go along ;)

Roberto Dinamite
Overall leading scorer in The Campeonato Brasileiro, with 190 goals he also appeared for Brazil 47 times, scoring 26 goals.
Dinamite was a score from anywhere striker, blessed with great speed, skill and technique. Quite simply, he was a goal machine.

I now need to build a back-line so I'm going for Italian World Cup winning Left-Back, Antonio Cabrini.

Was just about to have Forster so will have to go a different route to get this team together...Carlo Ancelotti

The steamroller from Palatinate

With defenders going thick and fast, you chaps have finally forced my hand. Hope I can complete the rest later

An absolute beast of a defender. If you ever wanted to describe everything that is good and archetypal about German footballers, you would point at him.

Versatile as well: LB, CB, DM... (which helps if I can't find an alternative to Forster or my other midfielder goes).

Carbrini and Elkjaer were both in my thoughts but those two positions hold quite a lot of quality options in this draft

Same thing here, but with so many defenders going I couldn't risk another round without a top quality one.

Ossie Ardiles

Delighted to have him so late on, World Cup-winning hero and English league hero. Makes a fearsome midfield two alongside Neeskens in terms of energy, tenacity, dribbling, pace, passing and all-round intelligence. Formidable in defence and hugely influential going forward.

You really rode your luck after mentioning (on a PM) your interest in him in the first round. I've been very very tempted but didn't want to start shit-stirring.

It's not like you had "discovered him", but it just felt wrong.

There's no real reason not to mention players as well known as Ardiles, as far as I can see. He was yours for the taking if you wanted him, it's not like I was claiming him as mine!

Briegel's quads are impressive.

Good player, but it was Platini making him look better...

Oh wait ;)

Nice pairing you got going there Gio.

A few interesting partnerships developing - Scirea and Forster, McGrath and Augenthalar, Socrates and Oscar, Neeskens and Ardiles.

Of course. I'm not complaining at all, just pointing out you rode your luck. Schuster+Falcao+Ardiles was overkill. But I was tempted. Problem with this is there's always one more class player you would want for your squad but it's a 12 :(

I thought with you having Falcao already there was no need for another but really, you could've probably fit them all in. Having the same problem myself as to whether to add another midfield schemer and go for the flawed but admirable 4222 or go for the more conservative 433. Ardiles-Neeskens-Antonogni already does everything you could ask for from a midfield but still, it's tempting just to go all Brazil '82 and throw another in.
