From what I can tell exit polls aren't really seen as useful in the USA as they are over here in the UK.

How much of this record turnout is simply due to population growth? Pretty sure 2016 and 2020 were also record turnout in absolute numbers.

Exit polls in the UK are literally “who did you vote for”.
Not these wafty finger in the air “do you like a strong economy or do you like immigration” bollocks.
Unless there is a legal reason they can’t run the same sort of exit poll I’m inclined to believe that it’s very much designed to give these pundits something to muse and debate for the next 18 hours without having actual obvious data to work with.
