We do this in the UK for postal votes alongside DOBs. We usually ask people to update every 3 years. It’s usually successful but we do reject some and sometimes couples sign each other by mistake.

It didn't screw us in 2016, it was actually one of the first tools showing that the votes coming in were significantly better for trump than expected. It was brutal to watch it, but it did it's job.
The issue this year is that the NYT tech workers are on strike, so the paper isn't confident that they'll be good to run the needle live in terms of robustness/security of their tech infrastructure. The model is good to go in theory.
