2024 Summer Olympics (Paris)

I didn’t say it was. I said I’m sure he hoped to run a faster time tonight.

Then I don't understand what relevance his time earlier in the year is to proving the tactics were right or the execution being wrong(though the result itself proves this). I'm pretty confident he'll never try it again. I also think he's far more likely to win golds moving forward than any of the top 3 today.

I just think he was hoping, whatever his tactics, to run a faster time than he did tonight and get something very close to his PB, if not better. That’s all. And I really don’t care anyway. I’m just pleased the pair of them lost.

What the fugg was the Korean judge watching?

Brilliant by Kellie.
Well bloody done

Ireland and New Zealand slugging it out for the overachievement award - on the basis of their populations. I saw someone trying to give it to Australia earlier before being correct that both NZ and Ireland have populations of 5m and had 3 goals a piece... Ireland take the lead.

Feck yeah. The boxing scoring system is so fecked. But that was sweet all the same. Delighted.
The German judge rated opposed to the other 4 judges both the second and the third round…. The korean did worst, he gave the Chinese girl the first round. Hard to understand.

Now we need to have herself and Michael Carruth to have a straightener to sort out once and for all who Ireland’s hardest person is.

The Kiwis tend to do well in every Olympics don’t they? This is pretty new territory for us.

Does make you wonder what we could do if the government actually pumped money into something other than the GAA and greyhounds.

Agreed mate. I don’t think they should be pumping anything at all into greyhounds, if I’m honest.

Dominica have 1 gold for a pop. of 72k

Not sure we're getting close to that.

They’re only 1% body fat, they can handle it.
Either that or lobby to make hare coursing an Olympic sport. Surely a better watch than dressage?
It would genuinely be more fun than watching people cycle in a circle.

Am I being thick, or have the BBC not covered any of the climbing? I probably am being thick, I haven’t watched the Olympics before. I was expecting to see some coverage of Toby Roberts but can’t find anything.

There’s a GAA club in every parish in the country. They get about €30m in funding.

There’s an athletics club in some bigger towns around the country. Athletics Ireland gets about €19m.

The GAA isn’t disproportionately funded based on participation.

Why can’t we ask for more sports to be supported without trying to take from our national games which are accessible to every child in the country. The GAA isn’t perfect. The merger with camogie and Ladies football has taken and is taking decades longer than it should have.

I was in my local pitch tonight. Under 17 boys and minor girls football training, under 12 hurling training, under 10 boys football training and under 15 hurling training and our mixed nursery were all on from about 6pm - 9pm along with our senior footballers. Probably 120 people training and using the facility along with dozens of parents walking and socialising. Give me one other organisation which has that going on across the country.

Highest ranked nation who has never hosted previously

(Saw it in Twitter)

Football (soccer) and rugby. They don’t have the same facilities or funding but do their best to cater to boys and girls in exactly those same age ranges. Despite an uneven battle with the GAA for pitches (and players!). Anyhoop, the fact that GAA is awash with cash is definitely not a topic for this thread!

I'm not from Dublin. There isn't a town the size of mine in the country with 120 kids playing soccer and rugby combined on any given night.

Edit. And you're right. This isn't the thread for it. Great night for Ireland. There was no need for the GAA bashing. The usual old chestnut of it wasn't for the GAA we'd be winning world cups and twice as many Olympic medals.
