2018 US Elections

ways to go yet.

don't underestimate the surge of angry Democrats this November.

That still may not be enough in the Senate given the lopsided amount of Dems up for reelection this year.

In order to win - the Dems could potentially lose on seat (let's say McCaskill) and hold serve in their other shaky seats (Manchin, Nelson, Heidtkamp, Donnelly).

Then they would need to pick up seats in Arizona (Flake's seat), Nevada (Heller's seat), and Tennessee (Corker's seat). They are currently looking good in 2 of the 3.

The final wildcard is of course who would get McCain's seat. If David Garcia manages to become AZ's next governor then McCain's seat could go blue.

Why has he picked such a stupid date. The candidates who received pac money since Jan 2016 will have spent that money during the 2016 elections and for the midterms.

Is he expecting those candidates to miraculously recoup all that money they spent?

They presumably wouldn't be able to use PAC money after they announce.

To the Members of the Randolph County Board of Elections and Registration,

The ACLU of Georgia writes to express grave concern about your discriminatory proposal to eliminate over 75% of polling places (7 out of 9) on the eve of the November elections. These polling place closures will virtually guarantee lower voter turnout in a Black Belt county that is predominantly African-American (60%), and will completely prevent rural voters without transportation (again, disproportionately African-American) from voting in person on Election Day.

The timing of your proposal is also suspicious and calls to question your true motives behind this proposal. These are the exact same polling places used in the primary and primary run-off earlier this year. It makes no sense to suddenly reduce the number of polling places for this November’s election, which will see far higher voter turnout than in the primaries or the primary run-off. Your proposal has also been plagued by procedural irregularities that cast further doubt about the real motivation behind these proposals.

Making it disproportionately harder for African American voters to cast a ballot—especially when done so deliberately—is a violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, 52 U.S.C. § 10301, and the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution.

We demand that you reject this proposal or you will face potential legal liability.

I swear the US is the only first world democracy where you see this shit on a regular basis. It’s just an endless attempt by the GOP to disenfranchise blacks and Latinos, and they don’t even bother to try and fecking hide it most of the time.

Surely gerrymandering should be considered illegal? Is there anyone else it happens on such a regular basis?

Typical blaming the voters instead of the corporate Democrats who lost 1000 seats under Obama. Republicans dont control 33 state governments because of green party voters.

Republicans have huge majorities in the house and the Senate and state legislators and they control the presidency and the supreme court due to the colossal failure of neoliberalism and capitalism. The Democrats killed acorn. Obama ran on card check and didnt even try to pass it. Clinton took money from the Saudis and wall street. Obama passed a pathetic healthcare bill that most people who have it cant afford to use despite a true mandate and a supermajority. He made a deal with the drug companies and they made him look like a fool. He thought he was so clever nominating Merrick Garland because Orrin hatch said some positive things about him a couple years ago.

These people are fecking losers and they always will be. Obama is Charlie brown and he spent 8 years watching mitch McConnell John Boehner pull the ball away without ever learning his lesson. His presidency is a failure. He cleared the field for a candidate with record unfavorables and decades of baggage and then watched her lose to a rapist.

This country is a hollowed out shell. The post industrial midwest is a wasteland. Flint, Gary, Youngstown, Milwaukee - Obama didn't do shit for any of these people. We tie katrina around bush and rightfully so but flint still doesnt have clean water and Obama is wakeboarding with Richard Branson. This country is in crisis and Obama is producing Netflix shows. Hes a coward. feck him and all the other corporate Democrats who sold out the middle of this country to billionaires and corporations.

Their role in american politics is to convince us that we cant do any better, that we have to live like this. That we have to accept tens of thousands in student loan debt and an opioid crisis. That we need to crush workers under the boots of tech companies. That there is no option but to send jobs overseas and give huge bonuses to bankers. That healthcare is too expensive and housing isnt a right. Democrats are the enemy of progress. They are the enemy of working people. They are enriching themselves with dnc jobs and think tank consultancies.

Dont you dare scold those of us who have been ground up for decades by both parties of complicity. Take it up with the democratic party and with Obama and Hillary.

I never took you for the disingenuous type. There are so many things wrong with your post but I think it's better I not respond.

The Socialist platform that was put forward by Sanders was pushed aside by the corrupt party machinery that had already selected Hillary, the Corporate choice.
Obviously many angry voters chose to stay away or simply vote 3rd party or even Trump.

The DNC realised how angry people were and got Donna Brazille to spill the beans on what happened. Because they knew the crone was planning to run again. Biden was the Blocker too.

That wont happen now.

But hey. Talk about slamming shut the barn doors after the horses had bolted.

everything that has happened now is primarily the DNC's fault.

Oh. btw those outraged Republicans shaking their heads about Trumps racism.

They blew those dog whistles so loud everyone heard them.

Blame the lazy blacks for Welfare. Hispanisc for job losses.

The horror we see now was created by both parties.

Trump is simply the result. Not the problem.

When are the Georgia elections?

If I'm back on the mainland in Georgia around that time I may well organize a group of people volunteering to drive voters in the booth in the area affected by GOP asshattery.

What about Sanders?

Don't like him either for President. He has some good ideas but for a country running ~$20 tn in deficit he is not the right man for the job. Democratic socialism or Socialist Democrats or whatever can wait for a little while. Sanders and his new acolyte, the latest progressive media darling Ocasio-Cortez, are never able to provide vivid description of their ideas. Talking them expand on them is like watching a train wreck in action. The United States is not a small country with a limited and mostly homogeneous population that can be turned in one day.

I would like a younger, more progressive but also practical person for the job. Some one who can incorporate some of Sanders ideas while living in the real world. I am certain a couple will emerge after January once we are done with the midterms. It's still early.

This is why the Dems would be shrewd to continue floating the older candidates so they can receive a bulk of the coverage and ridicule (Biden, Sanders, Warren etc), which would then allow some younger candidates to emerge from the fray relatively unscathed by Trump and his media stooges. Ultimately the ideal candidate will be one who is younger and can galvanize the two factions within the party.

Only hours after the convictions of Mr. Cohen and Mr. Manafort, Representative Duncan D. Hunter of California was indicted on a charge of using campaign money to fund a lavish lifestyle, including the alleged purchase of golf shorts masked as a charitable veterans contribution.

Those charges came only weeks after Representative Chris Collins of New York was arrested on charges of insider trading, something that has also tarnished a handful of his colleagues, including Representative John Culberson, an endangered Texas Republican. Mr. Collins and Mr. Hunter were Mr. Trump’s two earliest congressional supporters.

In Virginia, Representative Scott Taylor is accused of forging signatures to get an independent on the ballot this fall to help save his seat. And in Florida, Representative Vern Buchanan is accused of accepting a seven-figure yacht loan from a bank lobbying for last year’s tax cut, then purchasing the 73-foot vessel on the same day he voted for the measure he helped write.

“It has been a really bad August,” as Mr. Cole put it.
