2016 US Presidential Elections | Trump Wins

“No, I don’t want to think about it,” he said when Mr. D’Antonio asked him to contemplate the meaning of his life. “I don’t like to analyze myself because I might not like what I see.”

It’s striking because it isn’t surprising. It’s simply a confirmation of one of the biggest concerns raised by the potential of a Trump presidency: that Trump simply can’t handle criticism or dissent — even from himself.

4 Years from now the white, blue-collar, non-college educated and male proportion of the population will have shrunk even further. Plus the GOP will now enter into a phase of internal civil war.

They are in a spiral of decline unless and until they ditch their lunatic fringe, which won't happen easily.
The Republicans won't pander to the lunatic fringe again. Not that they did this time, mind you. Trump won the nomination by sheer force of his celebrity and the GOP got swept up in it. The party elites wanted nothing to do with him. There's nobody like Trump waiting in the wings, in any case.

I'll bump this when Hillary loses in 2020. I don't think it'll even be close. The US hasn't voted for the same party 4 elections in a row since they the wartime elections of the 1940s. They won't make an exception for the least popular winning candidate in US history, who also happens to by part of a political dynasty (something Americans distrust implicitly).

They've been doing that for that last 8 years, which is why Trump got the nomination. I'll believe they'll stop when I see it.

If Trump wins, it'd kill the lunatic fringe completely because he'd make such a terrible President.

But he won't, so it'll continue to stagger along.

However, at this stage, I can see it being severely undermined.

@Dante is probably being a bit over-dramatic and over the top in assuming that Hilary will lose in 2020 but he makes a fair point: very few parties remain in government for longer than 12 years, and Hilary's been up against Trump.

Yes, Trump did beat the rest of the Republicans in the primaries, but I think his presidential campaign has been demolished by his own failings: namely his incoherence, lack of genuine policy, sexual assault allegations, and splits from the Republican party. His campaign has been ridiculously, absurdly shoddy, full of basis errors, and a lot of his ads have been very amateur in comparison to what Clinton's produced. If that can come close to a President, then a well-run, scandal-free campaign from a Republican will be a massive, massive threat. Someone who can point out Hilary's many flaws, without having too many of their own that deters voters. Granted, there's a lot I'd take issues with in any Republican...but it's the general public they have to appeal to.

Certainly, when you consider the establishment nature of the GOP, the Dems may find themselves in a tough spot when they are the ones being perceived as the establishment, and the Republicans are being seen the genuine party of change. Someone who can capture the more conservative, religious aspect of the Republicans and mix it with the anti-establishment rhetoric of Trump (even in a hypocritical manner) has a good shot. Whether that candidate exists is another question.

This thread has gone insane! @Ubik losing it over stepping on Lego, and now everyone is talking about killing Dean Ambrose. I mean, I know the WWE is shite, but surely no need to kill people for it.

This is one of those "no one has become president in situation x rule" which are frequently broken. You'll usually be odd on to bet that winning 4 in a row won't happen, but it's not free money. Especially if they continue to be racist.

What Dante's post doesn't however factor in is the fact that the Republican Party is going through an ideological schism that isn't compatible with any other event in modern history. The Alt-Right/Tea Party/Talk Radio wing is controlling a significant chunk of the movement's narrative whereas the rest of it is being driven by moderate, traditional elites. Neither side can stomach the other and as long as they are separate, it is bad news for the GOP's future chances at the Presidency. And that doesn't factor in the reality that demographics and social attitudes are already tilting towards the Dems even without the Republican infighting.

Do we really think the Republicans are going to get their house in order during an intra party civil war over the next few years ? Have they shown any aptitude to learn from past mistakes after McCain got trounced in 2008, then Romney in 2012, and now Trump in 2016 ? Not only do they not learn from mistakes, they perceive losses as indications they weren't extreme enough then double down on their extreme policies in the next cycle. That is hardly an indication that they will win the WH back in 2020.

But you think, without the lunatic fringe, Hillary would still lose in 2020?

What's stopping Trump running again?

His loss will stop him running again. He will be systematically dismantled after the election. From Trump University to tax evasion, to foundation spending to his groping scandals, there will be little of his reputation left to open a bank account let alone run for President.

To add to that, you don't get away with slagging the "dishonest media" without getting burned! Mess with the bull, you get the fecking horns!

He still has about 35% or so of American in his pocket.

I originally planned to visit on Friday, but I got a early flight out on Friday (7 PM), so unfortunately no. But I'll be moving to Oakbrook/Lisle/Naperville in the new year, so will hope to meet up with you soon.

Terrific. Hit me up when you move here. January though? lol! Have you been to Chicago in the winter before? If not, you're in for a very nasty surprise.

I have a bar + restaurant here, and run an indoor sports facility. So if you want to play football, that's all we pretty much do.

Even without that though, there's a significant portion of the population that just aren't going to vote Dem and that gives any Republican candidate an initial boost: even someone as incompetent and dreadful as Trump may still poll over 40%. Even with infighting and disputes, take a strong, capable candidate in 2020, and they're almost certainly in with a chance. Even now, with the current disputes and a good portion of the party hating Trump, they may still retain control of the Senate. If they can do that this election...they do have some sort of chance in 2020.

Even though social attitudes are continuing to change, we've arguably seen a certain blow-back during this election among many Trump supporters (not all of them old), and social attitudes often do change for the better at a slow, slow pace.

Also, the sort of rigid absolutism that the likes of Stein and Cruz push is always going to be a recipe for political failure, as the opposition will simply galvanize against them passing any policies unto the next mid term election cycle. Successful governance is all about compromise, cooperation, and piecemeal progress. The Clintons seem to understand this better than anyone in the modern political era.
Yet unfortunately many seem to believe that somehow makes her a bad politician. People truly do not understand how government works.

No way is Hillary getting a second term. People can only barely stomach her now, and that's because she's up against Trump. Also, the US hasn't voted the same party into office for four elections in a row since WW2. The Republicans will have a banker on their hands in 2020. You can put money on it.
Rubio vs Warren. Your havin a laugh son.

Yea man, wrong time. But I've lived in NJ/CT for 10 years now. At least it's not as bad as moving from India.
