What? Every chance? You´re fecking kidding me? There is no way on earth China would invade Japan. Jesus, who´s been frightening you?

While I find it very, very unlikely that China would invade Japan, one only has to look at WORLD history, let alone the history of the two nations, to know that the idea of China invading Japan, or any other war is not beyond the realm of possibility. Not saying it could happen any day now either. World War One was once called the War to End all Wars. World War II was looked on the same way by some , especially with the advent of atomic then nuclear weapons, how has that worked out for the world? To say China is only an economic power sort of ignores the large military build up they are undertaking, along with their claims to so much territory in dispute with neighbors (including the man-made of expansion and militarization of islands in disputed waters). Now don't get all worried that I am saying China is some sort of evil nation looking to take over everything, I am not, just saying they will in the end be driven by the same sort of thing that has always driven nations, especially those with great power.

Why would China invade Japan? Not to mention risking an all out nuclear war? China has never had safer borders, and have never (at least in modern times) done so well economically. Why on earth would they risk all this to invade Japan?

Maybe it´s time to start following the money closely from all this bogus scaremongering for defense spending.

They are bordered by arguably the most dangerous and unstable, nuclear armed state in the world. This is a threat to regional peace as well as the economic gains China has made.

But they´re like the only pals North Korea has. Have that whole border with a pal is pretty safe. If North Korea loses it, it will certainly not be against China. They would be the last country these kooks would go after.

China's sabre rattling in the South China Sea is ominous; they're clearly trying to intimidate their neighbours. The US can't allow them to turn a stretch of international waters vital to world trade into a Chinese lake. It's a major issue, and if the Chinese push too hard, there's a serious risk of military conflict.

Of course China doesn't want a war with the US - the Americans would wipe the floor with them. But if they're behaving like regional bullies now, what happens when they get even stronger?

Don't really think any nation in the region nor the US wants a war with China either, not even a conventional one, it would not end well for any of the participants.

So what exactly are the Chinese going to do? Invade some country in Asia? Why? And risk nuclear proliferation. This is just crazy talk. Compared to what China was years before, they´ve really come back into sane world relations. This all just keeps justifying and justifying nations, especially the US, to continue to fleece their tax payers on the boogieman.

They are less pals than you think. China reluctantly tolerates North Korea as a hedge against South Korea's growing economic influence in the region. Having a despotic pseudo-friend can be a useful counterbalance when you are surrounded by strong, free, economic powers like S. Korea and Japan.

Yeah, there were two massive even bigger scams - imperial powers enriching themselves off the rest of the world and the massive exploitation of raw materials, all so they can . . . take these appropriated riches and go to unheard of world war against each other. Two of them. Brilliant. They had been pulling off the same thing for hundreds of years. The riches from Asia and the New World to be put back in endless warfare among themselves. WTF?

The past 25 years? Have you not heard of the Cold War son, the one that started like 75 years ago?

Are we going to get into the history of all of the bad things that ever happened in the world? I was talking about the size of the US military, and timed my comment to the end of the Cold War since I judge that a sizable military was necessary until then. Its probably been oversized throughout (Eisenhower, Military-Industrial Complex, etc.), but its broad expansions and contractions have made sense to each time period. The post 2000 expansion is what made the least sense.

China hedging against South Korea growing economic influence? What? China?

Not really, if you consider the the sickness of the "war on terror." Now there´s the China and Putin boogieman as well.

North Korea is a big concern for them as they are neighbors. No rational actor in the region - whether Communist, Capitalist, or anywhere in between - wants to deal with the regional problem of North Korea detonating nuclear weapons in its neighborhood.

He's tugging him off in this one.

Oddly enough, the saddest part of this election is that people who know Trump say he's a decent guy with fairly liberal leanings on a lot of issues. He's just invented this race baiting, nativist clown car persona to pick up votes from the angry, scared, and easily led fringes of the tea party base. If he wins, he will be fairly centrist (with a lot of random Trump silliness thrown in).

Paul Ryan runs it? Damn, I thought it was some bloke named Brian Roberts that has worked there since the 80s, and was on Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

I guess you learn something new everyday...
I guess your probably a dick in real life as well as on the Internet.

So this is why China is jacking up its military spending and throwing their weight around in the region, and now the US tax payer must react and empty their pockets on even bigger defense spending and maintain bases in 70 countries and 3.2 million non productive jobs with all the benefits and whatnot.

This is just madness that ordinary citizens all over the world must pay these taxes to fund these insane militaries amidst the inevitable scaremongering on a worldwide chessboard. When are people just going to go, feck this bullshit.

Yeah, I´ll just lay here in my hammock with my spliff in Colombia while the US, Europe, Russia and China have it out, or at least spend more than a 100 fold to actually not have it out. Thank god I won´t have to pay for that crap. Or mebbe we´ll have a war with Venezuela on the cheap.

I'm going to visit you one day. I've wanted to meet Colombian women since watching Miss World on Thames TV 35 years ago.

Why set the precedent?

I don't think the US give a shit if a lot of people sue them following this, our gov and various victim group have sued them for use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War and got feck all for forever now. However, the threat of the Saudis liquidating their assets and feck with the dollar is very real.

Hard to see the administration and by extension, the Democrats, come out of this unscathed.

I can't see them fecking with dollar considering the US is the only (sort of) friend they've got.
