2016 US Presidential Elections | Trump Wins

Obvious new strategy by Trump, Rubio, and Cruz. Trump's people told him he needs to lower his negatives which is resulting in his less combative approach tonight. Cruz and Rubio are tap dancing around topics while doing their best to avoid overtly hitting Trump.

Cruz and Rubio coming across as less hateful than Trump and Kasich.

The state of the Republican party

We're a very small part of the American voter bank...but, I'll be back home come Sept and, we'll be working hard to ensure - the Republican party will not get any muslim votes.

I hate the muslim community being thought of as this single minded thing...but, when it comes to open hatred of us and our faith by people who want to be our president...has to be resisted.

Pretty uneventful debate that didn't move the needle for anyone imo. Cruz and Rubio chose to be less combative because they finally realized the cost/benefit of mud wrestling with Trump just isn't there, and perhaps going positive about their own messages may do the trick, which it won't since its a bit too late for any seismic move in poll numbers this close to the 15th. Trump did a good job in being a bit more diplomatic which will help him with his own base. Can't see anything other than a Trump win in FL and possibly a slight Kasich win in Ohio, which will pretty much put Cruz, Kasich, and Rubio mathematically out of it.

Just making a quick contextless generic comment.

I do find this thread a very informative/enjoyable way of following the US elections. As a Brit who wouldn't really know where to go to find out about American politics, it is very handy.

Agreed. Apart from this cycle, I don't really care about the rest of US politics.

Similar to the way most Americans don't, as per that Samantha Bee video :D

Agreed. I follow things on the FT and The Economist as well but the most interesting coverage is provided by this thread.

Same. Was great in 2012 as well, when I didn't post on the site.

Thanks y'all. Wish we had a few more Republicans, just to make it less of an echo-chamber though.

Problem is I struggle to see how any rational and logical person could support this current Republican party.

This is true enough. Mind you, @barros and @MarceloFalcon are probably more Pro-Republican when it comes to domestic policies.

We did have a Republican nutter - I can't believe I've forgotten his name now (it was to do with a aftermarket high performance vehicle component supplier - Roush? ) ...since banned :(

RUF or something, can't remember the exact username. MJS as well.

Of course this is true, there were a couple of brilliant meltdowns in 2012. Mjs(?) was especially great.

I wasn't really following the thread at all back then, but I imagine some Republican meltdowns would've been good fun.

Exactly, which is why we need a few in here, so we can understand them better. Earlier in the week I was asking if there were any Trump supporters in here for that exact reason. There seem to be so many of them out there, some of them must support United and be able to read and write, how can there not be more of them in here?

Presumably at some point we'll have a poll regarding our views on the race. I would imagine at that point we'll find a few Trump supporters who are more inclined to press a button than state their view and get slated by our centre left consensus.

I guess.

I always thought people were more honest on the internet. I mean, I know people talk a lot of rubbish on the internet as well, but paradoxically, people are happy to say things they wouldnt say under their real name, because they are anonymous. Why should they care if a load of faceless usernames on the internet dont like their political views?

But I think youre right. I guess that effect is reduced somewhat when you have a fairly close-knit online community like this. We may not use our real names but a lot of people spend a lot of time on here and probably value their good name, even if it is an alias.

Yep. I think that's a very good description of it.

MJS wasn't all that right-wing tbh, from what I remember he wanted Obama to win both times. He did have a hard on for the US military and loved a good war though.

There was also WeWumitTwoTimes, and Alex, who might have been more Libertarian than just flat-out nutter.

Wasn't it MJSnumbers who was a hard ass republican here and a democrat on some other board. I am sure someone on here found the same username on a pro republican forum where MJS was arguing a contrarian position.

MJS was a T party racist who went mental after Romney lost and posted his huge collection of gay porn photos and got banned. He pretended to be an Obama supporter. Utter waste of space.

It amazes me seeing these people vote against their own interests. How could a working class man/woman vote Republican???

This is the greatest trick the conservative movement was able to pull off in the US - make the poor hate the poor. Make the poor blame themselves for their plight in the guise of personal responsibility.

If you're poor - it's because you deserve to be poor.

It's something I have wondered often...however, people like Trump are challenging that. It's the working class and poor who are mostly drifting to him...he says, I'll tax the rich! He talks about govt responsibility for healthcare ( I won't let someone die on the street due to a lack of medical care) and he talks of protectionism in terms of trade/jobs/industry.

There's also the notion that isonomy isn't a myth. The playing field is apparently dead level for everyone no matter your race, gender or ethnic origin.

Don't forget a fair chunk of race-baiting to split the working classes - which Trump is playing to worryingly new degrees.
