so where is the cut line looking to be right now? Also, had a feeling Sergio would have a rough start today.

Top 50/Within 10 shots. At the moment: +4 (probably +3 IMO), so Tianlang Guan should make it.

For all of Garcia's mistakes (which he's been punished for), he's still playing some pretty decent golf. His short game, in particular, has been pretty good today. It's his approach play and off the tee where he has struggled, but so have half the field. If he can salvage a shot or two between now and the end of his round, he's still in with a shout.

Dustin Johnson has a history of bottling big chances too so I wouldn't be worried about him topping the leaderboard as of yet.

The wind is always overstated in professional tournaments I feel. Playing at a links course most of the winds they get and struggle in are light winds for lots of links courses. It's only at the British Open that you see properly tough winds in my opinion.

Did anyone see the commentator on tv just walk into the photo/ recorded video of bubba's shot there, he even picked up a bit of grass, looked amazing.

Looked well good, quality gimmick!

I've got to say I vastly prefer the Beeb's coverage, but their technology is miles ahead. The flight of the ball was cool too. I still can't quite get my head around how it was done (by Bubba (and Sky!)).

I couldn't even listen to a word he was saying and just stared at his feet the whole time. He's using it sparingly as well too keeping me hooked on the commentary, instead of switching between channels.

Slow play. And he was slow and was warned on the 12th. He didn't improve so it's fair enough as far as i can see.

It's fair enough penalising him but it seems to me others must be just as slow judging by the fact there is about a 20 minute hold up overall. That can't be due to just him. If others are punished then he can have no complaints. If no one else is punished then the tournament officials will have some explaining to do.

Oh yeah, i agree with that. I just don't agree with the fact that it was wrong to penalize him. It'll turn out that no one else get's penalized in the end but is that because the officials are cnuts or because the players acknowledge their warning and speed themselves up? We'll see i suppose.

That's shit. 1995 was the last time a player was panalised. He's a 14 year old kid and they are picking on him. I bet some of the old pro's were going over the 45 seconds but they won't get mentioned. For this scenario they could have let it slide and gave him a proper warning tonight.

On another matter;

Rory McIlroy has made hay along the final stretch with a brave putt on the last earning him a birdie that take him to two under for the day. That is a tie for eighth and a decent platform to try and shoot down some the high-fliers over the second half of the event.

Great to see Rory at last starting to play a bit. 4 off the lead now and that's a sweet position to be in.

Suppose you could argue the pro's are more aware of what an acceptable time to take on a shot is even more so when you are under the clock. Any idea if this is his first professional tournament? I can't see anyone else getting a one stroke penalty but someone else definitely should.

I don't deny that it is a bit of a shitter though. Especially when you look at Tiger's group who took 1 and a half hours for 3 holes. I'm not sure they'll be 'dealt with'.

It's the worst kind of making an example of someone. Are they trying to destroy this kid before his career starts?

I just can't understand the decision making behind this. Surely the Chinese sponsors and TV companies will be going bonkers if the little fella doesn't make it though the cut now. This penalty helps no-one.

I'm pretty sure they took that long because of the hold up. They waited 20 minutes on the fourth tee.

On another note Tiger looking dangerous. Hit 10 fairways in a row and got the speed of the greens perfectly so far. Could set a very good score if he continues like this.

No, on the telly they said it took them 1 and a half hours to do 3 holes when they were waiting on the fourth. I think that they genuinely did just take that long.

I heard the same and thought the same but it surely can't take that long. They'd be on course for a nine hour round if it kept up and would certainly have been put under the clock. I just assumed they had been held up on most shots. Wouldn't mind seeing them put on the clock though just to show that Guan wasn't harshly treated.

Yeah but they were waiting. That's the whole point. They'd taken 1h20m to do three holes; that's ridiculous.

The strange thing is that it hasn't happened for 17 years. Are they making an example of him? Or is he less aware of the time constraints than the pros?

Rules are rules. It'd be good if they came out and clarified them; can be no complaints then.

1995 - He was harshly treated.

If he is on the clock and still takes the same amount of time then he isn't harshly treated. Most pro's would ditch some form of their pre shot routine to speed up their play thus avoiding the penalty. He has broken the rule clearly and shouldn't get preferential treatment because of his age.

Should add that I'm gutted he has been penalised but I don't think it was unfair if he didn't speed up.

Hes not looking for preferential treatment, but rather be treated like the other players many of whom have played slower and not been punished.

I know he isn't but if other players were put on the clock and took the same amount of time then they would have been punished also.

I'm just saying I don't think this will have been allowed to happen to a pro. Either he would have been explained the rule properly or he would have been given another chance.

In fairness to the kid he's been very magnanimous.

The only part I'm not sure would happen to a pro is that they would be put on the clock in the first place. After that Pro's are experienced enough to know exactly how long they can then take over every shot.

I thought he accepted it very gracefully too, but he didn't have much choice. He could potentially go on to play another 30 Masters and pissing off the members wouldn't be the best thing to do.

I don't know how many people would have taken it so gracefully but he'll have won a few fans. It was the right way to do it, but still very mature for his age!
