2011 Baseball Thread

So Yankees lose and the offense falls asleep until the games already more or less lost. Some really odd choices by Girardi though: Ayala for the 9th in a 3 run playoff game, promptly serves up another run, Ayala wouldn't even make the roster in most peoples eyes. Pinch hitting Brett Gardner in a big spot for zombie Chavez who hasn't hit a lick in some time despite having Jones & Montero on the bench who can do damage.

The non use of Soriano/Robertson when the game was still close in the 9th was just baffling though, I mean what is he saving them for? Fresh for Spring training? Lose the next 2 on the road and its game over ffs and it could have been different in the 9th with Valverde under pressure IF the game was within 3 runs.

Meh I don't fancy our chances unless CC out duels Verlander tomorrow, AJ will just blow it in Game 4 anyway.

I hope you're right about Shields, a two game lead would be nice. After today's game I wouldn't bet against Moore pitching two games in this series. I really can't see Price having another bad game after the Yankees game the other night.

On to Game 2:

James Shields vs. Texas this season: 2-0, 1 CG, 0.53 ERA, and .140 opponent average.

So the Rays are bound to lose.

And they did. Up 4-1 at the moment but the Rays are rallying in the 7th.

Texas got the job done. CC not looking good and is done in 5, Verlander despite the early runs is now dealing. I don't like the Yankees chances right now either tonight or tomorrow.

And its 2-1 Tigers. I think I'm done with Girardi, he is a great regular season manager but he doesn't have the instincts or the gut for the post season, 2009 just kinda seems like we were just too good not to win it. This season even if we claw this back it would take a miracle to win it all.

Cashman didn't get us a premium starter either in the offseason or the deadline so he has to take some criticism. AJ with the game on the line, the offense either needs to shell the shit out of them or we don't worry about anything until next April.

Great win. Delmon Young, the Twins didn't want him FFS!

Great game by Inge...he has been bad all year, real bad. I think a couple of those fly balls the Yanks hit would have been out in their stadium. What a little player Santiago is too! Utility player, but always swings a good, controlled bat.

Verlander out-duelled Sabathia, who wasn't all that great. Valverde shortens my life by another few days from stress, and A-Rob (who looks real old) and Teixeira can't shake their tag. The 4-5-6 hitters have done nothing.

Avila has struggled, so has Jackson and V-Mart (he must be hurt because he hasn't played this bad since the beginning of the year.) Tomorrow may be case of which pitcher isn't the bigger disappointment. Porcello is wank, he has been for most of the year. I really don't know how he almost won 15 games. He was great in his rookie year, the only year he finished with an ERA under 4, the other two years he was within touching distance of 5! Lefties hit him for fun, and the Yanks have plenty of those. The only positive is that Burnett is pitching against him

BTW, I almost always find commentators annoying, but these TBS guys are just bad. I don't think they work together all year and it does show. That being said, they`re getting better as the series goes along, but they`re still bad. The one wanked himself silly over Cano`s GS (and anything he does is totally wanked over, they couldn`t get enough of the 'great catch' he made for Santiago's bunt), the one implied that Bautista played for the Tigers.

TBS really do have terrible coverage.

The number one thing with the Yankees lineup is their inability to work the count early in the game, Verlander didn't have a pitch count at all last night for a lineup that is paid millions to work him.

Teixeira is terrible and has been for some time in the post season, I mean you keep a guy like that in there simply because you know he can come good but to me he doesn't look like doing it. A-Rod is hurt, no question and his power is gone for the season but he can still draw walks.

Nick Swisher, deary me. I like Nick, he is actually one of my favorite players but he is a terrible post season player and I don't know why. Regular season he works the count 3-2 seemingly in most AB's, he can't translate it into when it really matters.

On reflection I can't believe how bad the starting rotation is for a $200 million payroll team. CC you get what you get, Nova has been fantastic but we are lucky he has been, Garcia lucky he came good, Colon lucky he got us to May with good stats, AJ a turkey, Hughes out of gas in 4 innings. The free agent market isn't good for pitching and CC is gonna opt out so we gotta pay him more. I really hope Cashman (if he stays) pulls off a miracle trade for a quality name or guys like Adam Warren & The Killer B's step up but its probably a season too soon for them.

Ah I'm rambling, I'll take it all back if we win tomorrow.

Nothing much Girardi could have done just out played. Only thing I don't like is why is Joe not giving Jesus more ABs must have pissed Girardi of somehow. I hope Randy Levine was watching that, that is what happens when you sign players (Soriano) over the GM. Over the last 10 years everytime Levine steps in signs a player over Cashman never works out. Nothing much else to add really Leg-End said it all.

As for next year Nova is the only guaranteed starter. Garcia/Colon gone, CC will opt out, who knows whats happening with Hughes and I'm guessing if AJ fails tonight he will never start a game for the Yankees.

The Yanks will look at CJ Wilson had a terrible start other day but you have to look. The most interesting one is Yu Darvish do the Yanks take the risk after the Igawa situation. Does Cashman make a trade hopefully he does.

CC will opt out, I was hoping the Yanks would offer him like a 2 years added on which would go to a 6 year deal to take away the opt out but no. I think it is a big mistake really letting CC opt out, means other teams have a shot. Instead of a 6 year deal he'd probably get a 7 year will more per year so gonna cost a lot more money.

The Yanks need to do everything they can to get Felix Hernandez, even trading half their AAA roster.

A Rangers-Tigers matchup looks very tasty but neither series is over yet. Granted I'd wager the Tigers teeing up on AJ tonight. But then when you least expect it AJ throws a gem of a game.

Rangers advance. detroit have been Ranger killers for the last several years but i'd rather see them than the yankees. love yankee failure.

I'd quite like to see Rangers vs Tigers, but not at the expense of the Yankees.

Got out of a jam there, barely. Cleetus with a great catch. Despite the fact that he is a Yank, I still love him

Not looking good from that evidence. He can't seem to hit the catcher's glove, even with his fastball

Rather see Texas feast on Yankee pitching as Tigers pitching can keep Texas bats quiet.

The Tigers have 4 really good pitcher, 1 really good pitcher that is still untested (Albuquerque), and a number of pitchers, like Scherzer, Porcello, and Coke who can be unhittable just as often as they would be a field day for AA hitters

Burnett pitched a lot better in the 2nd, and the Yanks are threatening. If the Yanks are going to win this series and make it to the WS, they are going to need Burnett to pitch well, especially in a 7 game series.

He's been awesome in defense hasn't he, all he needs is one big hit and his bat will follow.

I know the Yanks are up 2, but I'm really surprised they haven't been able to do more damage. Porcello is not going to survive the third time around if he continues to pitch like this. Everything is high the zone it seems, the top of that order is going to feed off that

A-Rod & Tex with the stellar defense this series and nowhere with the bats. You can't predict baseball.

Soriano 1-2-3, collectors item. 6 outs for D-Rob & Mo, come on.

This ones about done then, loving the offense being awakened now carry that through into game 5.

Wow TBS at least try to sound excited for the last out.

Anyway 2-2 good game by AJ helped out by some great defence.

Rays Owner:
"I am frustrated this year," Sternberg said of losing to the Rangers for the second consecutive year. "We've replicated last year [on the field] and our attendance numbers were down 15 percent and our ratings were down. The rubber has got to meet the road at some point here. When you go through the season, you control your own destiny, if you win out. We're getting to the point where we don't control our own destiny. This is untenable as a model going forward."

Sternberg made no threats nor speculations, but it's never good to hear owners talk about rubber hitting the road.

"When I came in here in '05 and '06, I saw the stars, and I was confident that we could put a winning product on the field -- and I was told by you guys and others that all we needed was a winning team," Sternberg said. "Well, we won. We won. We won. And we won. And it didn't do it."

The Rays won the first game of this series 9-0 when they started a rookie who was pitching for the Durham Bulls one month ago. They lost the final three by four total runs. The difference in Game 4 was Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre, who tied the postseason record with three home runs. The Rangers signed Beltre to a five-year, $80 million contract last winter. That's almost twice the entire Rays payroll ($42 million). His average salary ($16 million) is as much as every Ray who was on field for the first pitch combined.

Uh oh....that sounds like a very unhappy man. Tbf to him, I would be too, you do all the hard work on the field, put out a winning team, and the people still don't show up.

Mind you he should have known...professional sports fans in Florida seem to suck balls, oh and despite your crying, you're still not going to get a new stadium

My friend who resides in St Petersburg stated they don't get the attendance numbers because the majority of people in St Petersburg don't care about sports and the ones that do care reside in Tampa and don't want to drive 30-75 minutes to overspend on a baseball game. They're the Tampa Bay Rays but that shit stadium is located in St Petersburg - a lengthy drive across the bay.

Game 5 then, I'm feeling great confidence with Nova on the mound and a fresh bullpen.

Blip, his stuff looks good and the Yankees will score tonight.

 What a terrible game by the offense. Girardi also did not even pinch hit, I mean he left Martin out there who couldn't hit with a paddle tonight. Montero & Jones with legit power sat on the pine.

Honestly I think he's gotta go.

I can't believe how bad of a hitter Martin has become...seriously, he was horrible. I remember him in LA, hitting almost 300 and 20 home runs. Honestly, was he on the juice in LA before (sort of like A-Rob maybe).

That game and this whole series shortened my life considerably.

Young's injury is concerning, with Boesch out, Raburn or Dirks are significant steps down. Even Kelly is a considerable step down, even though he hit a real hot bat this series, kind of like the way Posada decided to show up this series.

It was a great game, a good series. I know the Tigers played real well against Texas this year, hell, even Porcello pitched well against them, but I am concerned for the next series. They have just as many bats as the Yankees, and maybe have MORE power.

They're just a better team overall, but hopefully the Tigs can ride this momentum into Saturday

strange today. I was so pissed watching us pitch.

mind you..yesterday..watching Mariano...3 pitches...3 strikes

Shame A Rod won't be as effective when he reaches a similar age. Another five or six years of mediocrity at HUGE money awaits. You'd have thought the Yanks would have learnt there lesson after Giambi.

Yeah that A-Rod contract is going to hurt, I know he is playing injured but even before that he isn't anywhere the old A-Rod. Tex's contract might also hurt if he continues to struggle, I don't think I have ever seen a $22 million hitter so guranteed to hit a pop up to left field.
