2009 Baseball Season

5:31pm: MLB.com's Jordan Bastian hears from a source that reports of Halladay being traded to Philly within the next 24 hours are inaccurate.

4:50pm: Ed Price of AOL FanHouse hears that the Jays are considering trading Halladay to the Phillies for Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Jason Donald and Lou Marson. However, no deal appears to be close.

4:20pm: The Phillies are "fully determined" to acquire Halladay, while the Dodgers still have a small chance of acquiring him, according to Knobler. As for the Jays, one person involved says "it's obvious that they have to move him now."

4:05pm: The Jays could obtain a stronger supporting group if they were to accept J.A. Happ in place of Kyle Drabek in a possible trade, according to Heyman.

3:59pm: Knobler says the Brewers are "basically out" of the Halladay talks because they don't want to give up Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel. Boston's representatives also left Toronto today.

3:28pm: Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says the Phillies remain the favorites to acquire Halladay, but the teams don't appear to be close to completing a deal.

2:04pm: MLB.com's Ken Gurnick passes on comments Dodgers GM Ned Colletti made this morning on KABC Radio. Colletti says the Jays want two or three current Dodgers, including a young pitcher, or five or six prospects.

2:00pm: Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Phils are "trying hard" to obtain Halladay. He'd be surprised if they don't acquire him.

11:45am: Ed Price of AOL FanHouse says Cincinnati has interest in Halladay. Presumably, Halladay wouldn't accept a trade to the 44-50 Reds.

10:00am: With a week to go before the trade deadline, here's a recap of what we found out about Roy Halladay yesterday: the Jays could expand a deal to include other players; Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said Halladay wants to test the free agent market after next season; Halladay has given Ricciardi a list of teams he'd accept trades to; Kyle Drabek is not untouchable; the Angels and Dodgers are still in the mix. And here's what we've heard so far today:

Ricciardi told The Globe and Mail that Halladay has not given the Blue Jays a list of teams. Instead, the Jays have run teams by Halladay to determine his interest in joining them.
Jon Heyman says the Phillies are frontrunners for Halladay, but the Brewers have a shot at Toronto's ace.
Ricciardi told Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer that he's in the midst of serious discussions with four teams, all of which have the talent to acquire Halladay.
Ricciardi says he hasn't discussed specifics with the Phillies; Salisbury's sources say the Blue Jays would require Kyle Drabek and J.A. Happ in the deal, along with others.
Former Phillies GM Pat Gillick sounds tempted by Halladay, saying he'd give the Phils the chance to go "back-to-back."
Happ knows tonight's start could be his last for the Phillies, according to MLB.com's David Gurian-Peck.
Ricciardi told Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Sun that the Blue Jays won't pay any of Halladay's salary if they trade him.

Holliday Behind Pujols

Anyways the Halladay to Phillies rumors seem to have died out a bit

Yeah they have the Jays are asking for the moon I heard today from John Heyman the jays suggested today to yankees it would take joba, hughes and 2 more. Halladay isnt getting traded anytime soon unless the Jays lower the price.

Giants - Phillies on thursday - just got the tickets. Hopefully there will be some scoring.

Who's the probables?

Lincecum pitched today - so seems probable he will be pitching thursday. He is usually pitching the first day. Phillies I don't really know - first time they are here while I am here. And hitters they got Sandoval - he is pretty good in SF..(last roadtrip not that impressive)

Lincecum

Sounds gay but I absolutely love that guy, would break the bank to have him on the Sox, would even trade Lester :nervous:

The Laroche deal looks like it may pay off for us... Youk at third, Adam at first... it really lets Lars Anderson continue to develop in AAA, no need to rush him into the big club with Ortiz' clearly ailing ability.

Looking at the division standings and I don't remember going into August and seeing 18-20 LEGIT playoff contenders in a long time... even the divisions that have a commanding leader has teams behind them that with a run could nick the division.

Maybe i'm getting ahead of myself with about 65 games left for each team, but it's going to be a VERY exciting August.

Buehrle with a new record of consecutive retired batters at this time he is at 42, currently a perfect game through 5 innings

First time in this thread. Was in the US for 3 weeks there, and got into the baseball once I'd worked out the rules (with the help of my host). I've now decided it's the only American sport I like. Went to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park on Friday night, against the Baltimore Orioles. It was one of the best sporting events I've been too, and that stadium is something else. Real historic feel about the place, and the sport in general just seems like it must not have changed in 90 years (which is great).

Tell me this, do all baseball players have to chew tobacco as a condition of being a player? Oh, and Jonathan Papelbon, the pitcher the Red Sox bring on to close the game, you need to see his entrance at Fenway. 'Shipping Up To Boston' by the Dropkick Murphys blasting out and the whole place erupts. It's a bit showy and over-the-top, but great entertainment nonetheless.

IM SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAH

 Love it

As for the chew, alot of players use healthier substitutes

I've just come back to the UK after 5 months in DC, and I really got into baseball while I was out there, despite having the fecking Nationals as my local team. Also went to a few Orioles games over in Baltimore and really enjoyed it all, except I seem to have developed an unfortunate sympathetic bond with the Nationals despite my best attempts not to :(

Yeah, chew was what a lot of players used back in the day. Now a lot of them have stopped using it.

Terry Francona stopped and replaced it with Bubble Gum.

One of the stranger ones I heard was Javier Lopez who pitched for us last season actually used to melt caramel squares into cheeksized portions.

That is pretty weird. Javy should go back on the roids again

Report: Manny, Ortiz tested positiveComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz were among the 104 major league players listed as having tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, lawyers with knowledge of the results told The New York Times.

The two were key members of the Boston Red Sox World Series championship teams in 2004 and 2007.

Ortiz declined comment to The Times.

Ramirez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently came off a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy by obtaining a prescription for a banned female fertility drug.

In June, The Times reported Sammy Sosa was on the 2003 list, and Alex Rodriguez admitted to have used performance-enhancing drugs after he was linked to the list in February.

Players were tested in 2003 as part of Major League Baseball's survey to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing in 2004. There were no penalties for a positive test in 2003.

As part of the drug agreement between the union and MLB, the results of the testing of 1,198 players also were meant to be anonymous. Penalties began in 2004, and suspensions for a first positive test started in 2005.

Government agents initially obtained search warrants in 2004 for the drug-testing records of 10 players as part of its BALCO investigation that led to Barry Bonds' perjury indictment, but they found the more expansive list on a spreadsheet, obtained additional warrants and seized the larger group of records.

The union went to court, arguing the search was illegal, and three U.S. District judges agreed.

The government appealed, and a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled for the government, but the entire 9th Circuit threw out the reversal and decided to hear the case itself. The hearing was in December, and the decision is pending. The losing side could then appeal to the Supreme Court.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

There will be no major outcry like in the Rodriguez case. They should apply Tour de france style doping regulations to weed out all the cheats. Wishful thinking i know as drugs and baseball go together like Paris hilton and STDs

Some of the most heartbreaking news i've heard in a long time :(

Did you really not expect it though.

Bad timing when the Sox go to Yankee stadium soon expect dogs abuse. I remember when the news came out with Pettitte, Rocket and A-Rod got tested positive the Red Sox fans(not all I know) gave the Yanks allot of abuse. The tainted titles all the crap. The Red Sox fans went on to defend on how fair they were how clean all there titles were. All I heard was “we did it the right way” when we all know were all as bad as each other. I don't find it funny this is a bad day for Baseball yet again.

Not Ortiz, to be fully honest.

My biggest fears were Millar, Mueller and Nixon to be honest.

How can I watch this?

Do you get baseball streams?

I remember they used to show baseball on channel 5. Any British residents know if they still do this?

You can order MLB tv were you can watch every game online even after its finished. But im sure at teh time there will be a stream around for the Sox-Yanks game.

So these are all coming out from a test that was promised to be kept anonymous about 5 years ago?

And yet every few weeks a name seeps out

Wouldn't it be in everyone best interests, even the unnamed cheats themselves, to just put all the names out there?

I don't see why cheats should be protected anyway. Any players union standing up for these cheats is failing the vast majority of their representatives who are not cheating

They only agreed to the tests because of its concealed nature. The steroid era was a ratings bonanza for MLB until they were forced to take action.

I knew that Desert

But now they're coming out anyway from whatever source, just time to expose the whole fecking lot of em

And I don't know, but hopefully they have a better testing system then "well we'll test you but its meaningless because if you cheated we won't do anything about it anyway"

And then banning players when its leaked. Bizarre

It wasn't cheating till 2004. The league can't ban the players retoactively. Rodriguez had an injury to start the season and missed games while Mannyhad a 50 gamesuspension for another drug charge. The right thing has consistently been avoided by those with an agenda the owners and sponsors who want as much positive publicity a possible and the players whose legacy would be ruined if thenews that they roided leaked. Meanwhile the fans of every team are conned. The worst part is the sport of baseball loses.

Perhaps not considered officially cheating in the sport, but everyone knows taking steriods aint a fair playing field

Question is, who's to say there hasn't been decades of this going on?

I have little doubt it's been going on since the 70s

Why hello, Big Papi the hypocrite.

Everyone and their mother knew he was a roids boy though.

The day Halliday leaves the Jays will be the demise of the side for a long, long time. (i've been out of MLB for a while being without internet)

Decent game today from the Giants - beat Phillies 7-2 - granted Phillies had some really average pitcher playing that had to be changed in the 4th inning. Too bad Lincecum wasn't playing - was hoping to see him, was Jonathan Sanchez, but he was really good in the end. Have to say Sandoval is awesome - everytime I have been to a Giants game this season he has been excellent.

Was seated next to a Phillies fan who said that his worst nightmare would be if the Giants make the playoffs because they could easily be competing for the world series then. His reasoning was that in the first two they would play away against Phillies and would be able to line-up Lincecum and Cain away and then at home they could use Sanchez (that kicked ass tonight), Randy Johnson (if able to come back) and then Zito. I can see why Giants might be tough to meet in a playoff.

But it's a GREAT day for schadenfreude!!:lol::lol:

Ahmed, what do you think of the acquisitions of Garko and F. Sanchez? I like the moves, but some are saying we gave up too much or didn't get enough, especially for Alderson.

I think its a good deal for teh Giants do the Pirates have any players left.

Just seen the RedSox got V Mart without giving up there big young.

Peavy to Chi Sox

3:35pm: USA Today's Bob Nightengale, via Twitter, says the White Sox confirmed they just got Peavy. Brock agrees - Peavy approved the trade this time. Peavy is owed $56MM through 2012, or $74MM through 2013 if the Sox exercise his option.

3:29pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock via Twitter: Aaron Poreda's in the deal. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse has righty Adam Russell in the trade as well. Righty Dexter Carter and southpaw Clayton Richard are also going to San Diego, according to multiple reports.

3:22pm: Not sure what to make of this, but SI's Jon Heyman tweeted that Padres pitcher Jake Peavy was dealt to the White Sox again. Heyman is not sure if Peavy OK'd it. He says the Padres get minor leaguers. Peavy is currently recovering from a torn ankle tendon.

Jays make less then Halladay move, Rolen to the Reds For Ed-En

3:14pm: Rolen approved the deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). ESPN's Keith Law says Yonder Alonso is not in the deal. Instead, it'll be Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart heading to Toronto according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

2:56pm: FOX Sports says the Blue Jays will get Edwin Encarnacion and a minor leaguer. Rolen is expected to approve the deal. It's a massive upgrade for the Reds defensively.

2:40pm: The Reds acquired third baseman Scott Rolen, according to SI's Jon Heyman (via Twitter). The next step is Rolen approving the trade. He's owed $4MM this year and another $11MM in 2010. The slick-gloved 34 year-old has bounced back to hit .320/.370/.476 in 373 plate appearances this year.

Marlins make solid move to protect Hanley, pick up Johnson

3:00pm: A 180 in this rumor - FOX now says the Marlins acquired Johnson for Double A lefty Aaron Thompson, with the Nats paying Johnson's remaining salary.

2:37pm: Rosenthal and Morosi report that the Marlins are no longer pursuing Johnson or Heath Bell.

2:15pm: Via Twitter, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro says the Marlins are not expected to complete any trades by the deadline, which is in 45 minutes.

11:29am: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Marlins increased their offer for Johnson by adding another minor leaguer along with Tucker.

11:07am: ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins "appear to be moving closer" to a Nick Johnson trade. Last we heard, the Fish offered pitcher Ryan Tucker to the Nationals and asked Washington to pay part of Johnson's contract (he has $2MM remaining). At the same time, Danny Knobler of CBSSports says the Marlins are growing frustrated with the trade talks and may move on.

Johnson, a free agent after the season, currently projects to fall short of Type B status, so it makes sense for the Nats to take what they can get. At the same time it'd be big for the Marlins to put a .408 OBP player in front of Hanley Ramirez.

Sox deal new-boy Laroche for Kotchman, hope nobody got a jersey

2:49pm: Danny Knobler of CBSSports says LaRoche will be traded for Kotchman.

2:38pm: Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says LaRoche could be swapped for Casey Kotchman.

2:16pm: LaRoche has been traded to the Braves, according to Yahoo's Gordon Edes.

Victor to Boston

1:38pm: Done deal, says Yahoo's Gordon Edes. MLB Network's Tom Verducci says pitcher Bryan Price is the third hurler going to Cleveland in the trade.

1:35pm: MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo says (via Twitter) pitchers Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson are in the deal (ESPN's Peter Gammons agrees). Gut reaction: nice haul. Mayo also says the two clubs are looking at additional names to add for Cleveland.

1:27pm: FOX now says Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard are not in this deal.

12:55pm: USA Today's Bob Nightengale via Twitter: the Red Sox are about to acquire first baseman/catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians. Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, trying to confirm, says it "looks good." FOX Sports agrees, and notes a lack of a third team involved. They also believe this kills the Adrian Gonzalez talks.
