Madrid were only a special case since the turn of the millennium, even then their specialness consisted of spending obscene amounts of money on players that no other side would match.
Who were Barca pre Ronaldinho? Where were all the players clammering to play for them?
They were big sides and all, but this reputation for being the destination that all players strive to play for is a modern notion that will soon end.
It won't last because it can't last. Look at Madrid. From signing the likes of Zidane and Ronaldo they are now signing their stars from The likes of Spurs / Monaco / Bremen / Lyon / Celta Vigo / Porto etc. The step up clubs. Yet they still have this reputation as a club who takes any player they want regardless of who they play for.
There are players like DDG but that has personal complications that sets it apart but It's not as if they're walking in and saying we will have Hazard / Pogba / Muller / Vidal and name your price.
How many big money established players have they signed from other major clubs that they're stolen away? Kross?
The lustre of their pre Ronaldo era shone a little less due to the English and Barca domination. They come into prominence yet again when the English are at their lowest ebb.
My theory for that is the Premiership doesn't necessarily sign the best in the world. Our sides won't go out and sign Naymar from Barca for example. Our sides would be the clubs rivalling Madrid for the James or Varanes, the players who are ready to reach that top tier.
The English have been atrocious in this regard which has held us back and allowed Madrid to have the market to themselves. It's not as if I'm saying United will stop this single handedly, but it's the English top 4. Not only is it 4 other rivals for the signature, it's rivals that can pick them up earlier with more guarentees than Madrid could offer.
There's examples of our sides dropping the ball. Varane was ours until we confused him with the Jones signing. Modric belonged to Chelsea until Levy interfered. Suarez was Arsenal bound before they refused to honour the buy out clause. United turned down James when he was on trial. Bale was ours until he was guarenteed game time at Spurs.
That's Madrid inadvertently profiting off inexplicable sloppiness. Would they have persued these players if they already made the step up like they have or would they have looked elsewhere, for example would Herrera be a Madrid player right now if Modric opted for Chelsea? Would they have signed Silva if Bayern wanted Ozil?
Yet in these instances, whoever they did sign would be paraded as the best in their position and always getting who they wanted.

Good post. It is a legend of the media this Madrid hype. It annoys me that the 'english' media just allow it to happen instead of backing their own. There quick to do it in blind faith with the national team...

We do big the top Spanish clubs up far to much post 2000's it was Barcelona when they only bloody won 1 CL, atleast now it's justified.

Played 60 minutes for Germany tonight, saw a lot of the ball and showed some good agility on it while keeping things ticking over. The game wasn't played at a high tempo though so can't read too much into it.

I thought he was poor with plenty of misplaced passes. Schweinsteiger who only played in the 1st half looked much better.

Lots of one touch passing and quick releases. With that alone, he'd be a huge asset to the team. I know a lot of people like to attach the caveat 'if he regains his fitness', but I think he'd be able to contribute from day one. One of our biggest weakness at the moment is how slow our passing is in midfield. There doesn't seem to be any of that in the video. I'm quietly impressed and somewhat hopeful.

Good to hear that. Hopefully he returns to his best. Top top player.

Anyone fancy translating that post he just made on facebook?

Liebe Fans,

Euer Ilkay

He just posted this on Facebook, i have no idea what it's about.

Dear Knobjockeys,

normally I do not express myself to media reports, especially not on Facebook. I want this time but some things back deal and you gain a better insight.

In recent weeks, I, like you, read again and again, where I would not have signed already fixed. Today in contract negotiations here tomorrow at the medical check there. At first I could still smile about it, but when there was talk of "contract poker" and "rip-off", that has already voted me very thoughtful. After yesterday an ominous number has appeared in the media, I have decided, now even to say something about it.

The season 2014/15 is strictly speaking only on 30.06.2015 to the end. Although so far have been made in Europe hardly transfers, was made by me more demanded by rumor to rumor, but rather meet than later a final decision. Forgotten was this: I have one more year contract with BVB.

What is important to me: that's all neither Zockerei, another delaying tactic. What's next for me personally, I will as soon as possible - but only after the season and our important game for the European Championship qualifier with the national team - decide.

Until then,
Your Ilkay

Google translate. All I understood was the knobjockeys part though

I normally don't respond to media reports but this time I feel it's important to give the fans insight.

I keep reading that I've already signed for another club. One day I'm negotiating a contract, the next I'm having a medical. But then there was talk of trying to rip off BVB by getting a low transfer value, or using these rumors as tactics for a bigger contract renewal with BVB, and this made me thoughtful. After the most recent day of bullshit stories I decided it was enough and decided to speak out.

This season doesn't even end till the 30th. However, there have already been transfers in Europe, and my name keeps coming up, from one rumor to the next, always talking about my upcoming decision. Yet every report is ignoring that I have another year on my contract with BVB.

Some journo named Zockerei's bullshit claims are just a delay tactic so he can keep printing his rumors about me. I will decide my future as soon as I can, but after the upcoming national team qualifiers.

When are these national qualifiers out the way then?

He will stay for another year and move for free to Bayern next season. Heard it here first.
He won't leave for free, they will sell him this transfer window.

confirmed his decision of leaving the club last month and Dortmund CEO Watzke confirmed this news yet again.

“He will leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer, there is no question,” he said.

“It was not our wish that he goes but his. We told him we will sell and focus our full plans elsewhere.”

If he wants too much money on top of his transfer fee, he could stay. Sign with Barca or Bayern in January and then move on. The player is in the driving seat, not Watzke.

yep, with the new season literally months away, any move from dortmund is definitely dead in the water.

Especially when we haven't got anyone before the window opens. What's the point of a transfer window of you haven't signed everyone before it opens?

Club's full of amateurs

I'm guessing this is a non-runner at this stage, surely something would have been announced otherwise by now

Why would it have to have been announced by now? The international transfer window isn't even open yet. There are literally months left for a transfer to happen.

Dortmund have made it clear they expect Gundogan to leave this summer, and as no clubs have signed him yet it stands to reason that an announcement will be made at some point in the future, by us or some other club.

I would expect a few deals will be announced July 1st. Pretty sure that's the official date for European clubs
