Remember that brief period when some people thought that Cleverley and Anderson might be a great partnership!!?

I still can't believe we comfortably won the league with Cleverley as a regular. Fergie really was an absolute genius, eh?

Imagine what he'd do if he had Gundogan, Schneiderlin, Di Maria et al. We'd win the next five easy.

Had enough of tinkering, the best teams have an established best XI and stick to it every game - look at Chelsea for example last season.

The best teams have probably 7 or 8 players who play 80%+ or the games and 3 or 4 positions that are rotated through form, tactic or injury.

Who cares about Gündogan, at the moment not good enough. We just hope he can recover to his best, thats a huge risk. Lets buy Strootman and hope he recovers too while we are at it. I wouldnt be sad at losing out to Bayern, he needs much more than just regaining fitness to get to his best.
Agreed.

Strootman never really recovered from his injury whilst Gundogan has played almost a full season with no recurrence of his injury after returning in very bad physical form and is improving week in week out. Gundogan would be a steal at the quoted 25m euros that's going around.

Chelsea aren't a great example, mainly because I don't class them as being amoungst "the best". Barcelona under Guardiola is a better example.

So he has been in poor form

Question marks over fitness

Wants very high wages

Surely this is one we don't want, right?

He's asking for a lot of money apparently, if he's good enough for Bayern's midfield he's good enough for ours. At 25m he'd be worth the risk IMO.

You kidding? That sounds right up our street. We'll end up naming a fecking stand after him at this rate.

It is no coincidence Bayern dropped their interest after that game in the DFB Pokal. Guy was a passenger and looked miles behind his top form. I am against signing players with huge question marks behind their fitness and form. If he was free ok, but not for the wages and the fee mentioned. Plus going for Gündogan will mean we wont go for other targets, maybe Schneiderlin.

why is everyone acting like the Bild stuff is legit? it's classic transfer season click-bait

As if a team like Bayern would suddenly withdraw a transfer offer for a player like Gundogan who they'd have spent the months since his injury scouting just because he had a bad game at the end of the season.

I think this entire transfer to Bayern story started and ended with Bild.

It's more likely that they heard differently or that he's going somewhere and they just wanted to cover their tracks and made an excuse for Gundogan not going to Bayern, sort of to save face.

He shouldn't affect going for Schneiderlin, they are very different types of CM.

I do not think that had anything to do with it. Bayern knows the player since years.

He was not a priority one and their is a lot other options on his position. If they could have gotten him for decent money they would have taken him (and the risk) - if not not.

So ... to summarize, no new updates except that Bayern were suddenly in the picture and then quickly fell out of the picture. Right? :D

Gotta agree. All great teams have a spine with the rest of the squad built around it.

I like him but if its true he out priced himself to Bayern then we are second choice and he wants high wages, that reminds me of Di Maria, i think he'd be injured too soft for the PL

I really don't think Bayern would drop interest in a player they were supposed to be ready to spend €25m on after one bad game.

Based on what?

Looks like Bild linked him with Bayern for clickbait and then pulled the plug on the story once his transfer to a club is near. I think we'll hear something on Gundogan this week.

If we're truly interested in this player than I sincerely hope we did our homework well. This guy had been injured for quite some time. Ok he's got one season of football under his belt however he had never recovered his form. Lets hope we don't end up with Hargreaves V2

I still think Hummels and Gundogan could be done deals.

The nature of the injury he had means it VERY unlikely it will reoccur (See John Terry). With Hargreaves tendonitis is a very common thing that can develop after knee ligament surgery (I've had this myself)
Issues over his fitness is just the case of if he can get back to peak physical condition which I'm sure he can. He still looks like he can play, and hasn't lost his passing ability and vision.

Like someone else said, he could be discussing with several clubs simultaneously, and Bayern's offer was the lowest.

Well, as far as form goes, its hard to make a good judgment in this case. Remember, he was coming back from an injury, but had to do so in a team which itself was in woeful form. I wouldn't touch him if he has showing such form for a title winning team, for example. But in case, its worth a punt.

If thats the case fair enough, but if he goes to a lesser team and cites money rather than playing time, hes not the personality we need here, speculation of course but we want players who put football first, never felt that was Di maria when he moved here..

Based on what?

Which part? Injuries because his record mixed with his style indicate further injuries, he turns quickly and goes into challenges, or at least the top version of him did, you have to wonder whether a new league, more physically dominant would be good for him...

Who do you think the PL has similar to him?

He's injury record is fine, an iscolated incident with his back was no different to Paul Scholes and his eye, it isn't a dodgy hamstring, or a weak knee, its been operated upon and shouldn't cause him any further problems in the future. Being a combatitve player will help him in a physical league, it might be a bit of a cliché now but you're more likely to get hurt pulling out of challenges or going in half hearted than you going in committed.

Wouldn't surprise me if we were after both if I'm honest.

I think Hummels was our plan A and Otamendi was our plan B
Hummels decided to stay at BVB and now I think we will sign Otamendi, he (and his agent) cant seem to get out of Valencia fast enough.
From what I've seen this year Otamendi would be great for us.

Smalling has done well this season, I think LVG is looking for someone to compliment him, not replace him.

I thought we had Gundogan wrapped up as well, then Bayern entered the picture, now who knows.

Short memory mate. Smallings done well (or better than usual, more to the point) the last few months of the season - not the whole season. Herrera wasnt shit-hot in the 1st half of the season either.

Both look nailed on for a good whole season next though - bar injuries of course, which is pretty likely with Smalling unfortunately..

As regards to Gundogan - German's are homebirds & it was always on the cards that he would want to stay there & screw Dortmund by whoring himself to Bayern.

No chance he's coming to United if Bayern want him - regardless if we're willing to pay more dough too!

We'd be thick as shit if we dont go for two top class CB's this summer. Our central defence is a feckin hospital ward & has been for 4 or more years too.

Its pathetic for a club our size to think that constant crocks like Smalling & Jones would replace world class players like Rio & Vida :wenger:

For 25M€ he would be a great addition to us, but he's German, and with Bayern interested by him, it seems that we are already off to the chase and we'll only be his second choice.

He will give us more technical abilities to our midfield, and more fluidity. This year it has been very slow and sometimes so boring. With this kind of player, able to find the verticality with a pass, I guess that we'll be better armed to fight in Europe especially.

But, I just hope that we can lure him, as he's an upgrade to Fellaini, in a box to box style. He would be also a great complement to Carrick (and maybe play Ander higher)... So he would give us a lot of possibility in midfield.

Bayern is not anymore interested into him. Exorbitant wage demands and not everybody of the deciding persons were really keen on him. They might have taken him if it was a bargain - but like this it is not.

25 million EUR is too much transfer sum for him - he only has a year of contract left. Kroos (at that time World Champion with a great tournament - after two good years) went for 30 last year in the same situation. Age is comparable. Kroos is 10 months older. It is that what Dortmund wants... - but they do not want to let him sit out his contract at Dortmund with a new coach...

I thought they wanted Hojbjorg on loan or something and Bayern didn't want that? What I heard at least, that and that Pep wasn't convinced.
