Highly and he was one of the midfielders I wanted more than most for us to sign. To make it clear, if we do sign him, I'll be happy, but there are a few, not a lot, that I'd rather have for one reason or another. Vidal has shown more improvement over the course of the season and in my eyes, he'd be a better fit to what we need.

I think van Gaal won't drop Fellaini for Gündogan, because he sees his attributes, mostly his physicality, as a necessity. Gündogan isn't capable of playing as the holding midfielder yet, so what's left? Replace Herrera? I don't think he's currently better and he would compete for a spot with him, whereas Vidal for example would immediately replace Fellaini in the starting XI.
I fully agree that Vidal is the type of player we need more at the moment but Gundogan would be an excellent addition. In an ideal situation we would get both but I don't see that happening. Still convinced this one is bound to come here, we will see soon I suppose.

I agree with that, I only disagree with the strategy, I think that it would be best to sign Gundogan for his best position which is #8 while keeping in mind that he could become a #6#. But in the mean time we should buy a player who is #6 like Kondogbia.
I rate Kondogbia but I don't think he has the passing range right now to play in that deeper role for us. We are moving to LVGs favoured 4-3-3 and its vital for the player at the base of the midfield to have the ability to control games.

Kondogbia is only an example, and he is very technical and good passer, he is the type of player who gives the balance that Van gaal loves. Van gaal doesn't care about where his playmaker his positioned, his 4-3-3 doesn't necessarily have a deep lying playmaker.

If this guy is available we should be all over this... Barca and Real can feck right off..

Exactly - specialist roles suited to their game.

You would have seen quite a bit of Kondogbia Rouve - you rate him highly man?

He is excellent, very disciplined, good technically, athletic, he is a competitor and he has a great attitude, last season he joined Monaco with a lot of expectations and struggled but always said that he needed to improve, that Ranieri was right to treat him like everyone else.
This season he has been very good, playing for a tactically meticulous manager.

Thats great news regarding his mentality - aswell as his other great attributes you mentioned too of course..

He's definitely the type of player we've been cryin out out for!

If we get him I'd imagine that he'd play alongside Carrick rather than in place of him, with Herrera moving further forward.

That would be a dramatic improvement really. Fellaini has done well this season but he's still the obvious weak link in our midfield three.

I agree kondogbia would be a great addition and he has potential to get better and better. I think we. e much more in need of someone like kondogbia or schneiderlein than we are of gundogan. A fully fit and in form gundogan is a top class player so he would be a good addition and is worth the risk but if he is the only cm we sign this summer I think it would leave us a bit lightweight in midfield anytime carrick isn't fit which will probably be quite often.

This is my slight concern as well, if LvG doesn't feel he can replace Fellaini are start as a #6 then it seems a counter productive buy, we'd be better off like you say with Vidal or even Nainggolan. I wonder though if things would change if we also added Schweinsteiger or Kondogbia to the midfield 3 to rotate with Carrick.

For one, he isn't a holding midfielder or a Carrick replacement. I think we can do better than him and I'd actually prefer Vidal to him for example. And you missed the white text apparently.
Agreed.

@ravi2 Considering that Dortmund supporters on the cafe have said that Gundo requires Sahin to carry out the defensive responsibilities required by dortmund...why do you think Gundo can do it all by himself at United? Apparently he's lost his dynamism and tackling tenacity with the injury and is more of a playmaker at Dortmund...doesn't sound like a number 6 to me really

Time, you don't become a deep lying playmaker overnight, you have to do it and gain experience in that position. It took him more than a year to become a #8.

Edit: Gundogan at the moment lacks the three most important aspects of the role:
- The positioning
- The defensive instinct or nous
- The capacity to analyze the entire game of the team or being a "manager" on the field.

Yes, there his nothing that in theory will prevent him from learning that, but there is also nothing who guarantees that he will learn that.
What we do know is that, he has been a world class attacking #8 and that he is very good at it today.
The only lt thing he doesn't have is as much of the defensive stuff. He's got the ability to run the game from midfield just fine. Potentially far better than carrick too. Think more Modric than carrick. And I'd prefer that given that level
is higher than carrick's. We can find another bender (Sven) to do more of the dirty work.

He is a number 8, who would need a holding CM behind him to perform his best. At Dortmund, it was Sahin and then Bender who did that job for him.

Club source offers TWIST in Manchester United pursuit of Ilkay Gundogan
MANCHESTER UNITED have dismissed reports they are closing in on a deal for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

Dortmund confirmed last month that Gundogan, 24, will be sold this summer, prompting speculation that he was heading for Old Trafford after the German Cup final against Wolfsburg this weekend.

But senior United sources insist he is not on their radar.

Arsenal have also been linked with the £20million-rated player.

Dortmund's chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has already revealed the midfielder will not be at the club next season.

He said: "Gundogan will be leaving Borussia Dortmund this summer, that is a fact. I am very confident we will see various clubs coming in for him.

"It has not been our intention to see him leaving. It was his ambition to move clubs (this summer). Therefore we agreed. We will sell him."

He can run the midfield but he doesn't do it from very deep, he does it in the last 40m. And I'm thinking Modric more than Carrick that's why I say, no he isn't a Carrick replacement for the moment.

We don't necessarily need someone to dictate that much from very deep. A supporting midfielder like a matic or bender, with a real playmaker ala Xavi or Modric (or in this case, gundogan) can be just as good if not better.

Carrick was supposed to be the Keane replacement but he's nothing like him so we don't really have to follow the exact model we've followed in recent years, given it often coincided with us barely having a midfield.

If we sign then we'll need a pure DM and do a midfield trio of him, Herrera and that DM.
I think it'll work well. Two playmakers in the middle and one midfielder who shields the back four. Would give everyone the license to get about the pitch. And it's not as if Herrera and gundogan are bad defensively either.

Man, we are in agreement here, I was arguing with people who want to keep the same organization and displace Gundogan, when like you said we could just tweak our organization to suit the players.

That's either because we haven't actually bid yet and don't want to seem like we have tapped him up or he is choosing someone else ahead of us and just saving face.
Why the club would not be interested in a player who's back problem is well behind him (no pun intended), is only 24, will cost about 18m pounds and the type of quality player we really need - would be very strange indeed.

If klopp ends up at Liverpool I wouldn't be surprised to see him there
Very good player and provided his injury left no long term problem he has every chance of being a success wherever he goes

He has been linked with us, Bayern and Barcelona. What the hell would he do in Pool?

The club won't accept anything till we have officially signed the player. Hope people realize this by now.

Schneiderlin would be a good option. Should not be too expensive and PL experienced. Plus would fit the role and age profile very nicely.

Any player who turns down United, Barcelona, Bayern or Arsenal for Liverpool is an idiot.

Yep, same thing with Kroos.

He seems to be Barca/Bayern bound which is quite surprising seeing as he was out for over a year and definitely hasn't proven that he's back at his best. It'd have been a logical move for United/Arsenal who can't quite go for the very top talent yet but for Barcelona or Bayern who are already packed with top class players and could probably get the best of the best if they wanted buying Gundogan for €25m is a risk.

The first part of my post kind of clarifies that. The latter is just my opinion.
What I meant was that everything may be completed and just the signing formality may remain and the club won't like to confirm. Also because we may be waiting for the final on Saturday before we announce.

well as none of us have actually put a bid in yet and we have indeed recently been reported as not being interested- and lets be honest barca having a transfer ban may rule that one out - plus the relationship between dortmund and bayern (as well as the amount of midfielders bayern have) make that seem at best unlikely then why not go to liverpool to work alongside a manager you know with a big fat payrise as well - if he only wants cl football then fair enough he probably shouldn't go there (and he should wait till we actually qualify before considering us)
