More about whether he will regain his dynamism that made him so great in 12/13

He has the ability (in terms of his passing range) to still be a very good player regardless. So its not a big risk

His fitness (in terms of his back) hasn't been a concern since his last operation though has it?

You can repeat that as much as you want they won't listen.

Don't see how its that stupid. Not sure what LVG's ability to unearth great young players has to do with this either.

Signing players with questions over their fitness is always a gamble...a gamble worth taking for Gundogan though imo, especially at the prices that were being quoted.

21m isn't much for a good midfielder, Thiago who was known for his injury proneness costed only a little bit less.

Yeah even if he doesn't get back to his best he would still be a great signing for £20m.

@JPRouve I meant his dynamism...not over him getting injured. I know he's been injury free mostly since the operation.

Your previous post suggested doubts about LVG and his staffs scouting ability solely because they considered a gamble on Vermaelen.

Does anyone have any idea where we are with this potential 'transfer'?

Reading the Barca forum it seems they are pretty confident he is going there.

I can't see him going to Barca purely because of their registration ban. A suggested workaround was that they would buy him and loan him back to Dortmund, I find this unlikely though as it's already been confirmed he's leaving so I can't see him getting the greatest reception on a loan return, nor would he be particularly productive.

Yes seems a bit fair fetched really, Barca are getting linked with really good players yet they can't sign any! A transfer ban should be just that, no negotiations, no deals made for later on, just nothing.

I am hoping we get some more on this after the German cup final he would be a good player to have.

Hmm, not sure where you got that from.

This was my previous post:
"I think his point was that signing Gundogan on the basis that LVG and his scouts think he can get back to his best doesn't mean much considering their assessment of Vermaelen last summer"

Someone said something along the lines of how if LVG signs Gundo it must mean he and his scouts see something we can't about how he can go back to his absolute best again. The Vermaelen transfer was used by Ole as an example of us going after a player with physical concerns which didn't work out only last summer. Was just trying to refute the point about how LVG being able to see things we can't doesn't really hold up going by last summer and expecting Gundo going back to his best would be more of a gamble than a sure thing.

Has he gotten closer to his best of late.

Hey Amol :)

I've posted this vid in this thread before & to me, its show's the fella still has the passing range with both feet & also the tenacity to put himself about too.

A summer's rest & then a full pre-season & we'll see an improved player than his comeback season past.

Its not even close to being a gamble signing imo - especially for the money being quoted. He's only 24 years old & was never injury-prone (which some suggest), it was nerve problems in his back. His back is sorted now & he's nailed on for a return to his previous form imo.

Just hope we get him!

Mundo Deportivo going strong with him to Barca... Seem to have reports every other day.

It's gone quiet on our front though.

Last time it went quiet on our front, we had a new player a few days later. Hopeful sign?

I've been confident about this one all along tbh, the links from a source like Der Westen were just too strong too Just be false.

Though over on Barcaforum they're also very confident

I think the Gundogan saga will pick up next week after the Pokal final is done this Saturday. If BvB CEO said that he will leave this summer for sure, doesn't that rule out Barca?

Would anyone that is in the know compare him to Vidal for me? By that I mean, do they play a similar position etc..

They are playing in the same position, but are different player types. Vidal is the complete box-to-box package, Gündogan has abilities in that area, but is more creative, less physical.
I would compare Ilkay more with someone like Modric, while Vidal is more in the Yaya Toure mould (but imo better at defending and less going forward).

Hard to compare them both, as they interpret the position completely different. Vidal is that warrior type of player, who tackles everything, is up and down the pitch and a physical presence. Box to box at it's best I would say.

Gündogan on the other hand is more of a deep lying playmaker, who is always available for a pass, has really good vision and a good passing range. His first touch is sublime and even though he doesn't really look like it at the moment, but he has a great engine in terms of changing the tempo during dribblings. No sprinter, but has that burst of pace to make space for him. He also is quite mobile in terms of popping up everywhere on the pitch, busy as bee. We have a lot of great footballers in Germany, but I really liked him the most before his back injury, as he just had everything needed for his position. He isn't back to his best (how could he?) but I think he looked really good for a player who was on the sidelines for 14 months. Gündogan definitely played his part, that Dortmund played a much better 2nd half of the season. He is also quite versatile and is able to play the Carrick or Herrera part in our game.

I think he would be an exquisite buy for our posession based game and would suit us more than Vidal at the moment. We have seen what happens to our game, if we are misssing Carrick. We don't really need that "steel" in midfield in my eyes. We need a good distributor of the ball, someone who is resistant against pressing, isn't afraid to play vertical balls from deep to win space and is always available in the build up.

A good friend of mine works for Skysport News HD in Germany, who said the deal was already done, as "Der Westen" did. Talked to him yesterday and he told me, that they received their information from the Gündogan camp themselves back then. I'm pretty confident that we will sign him, because it reminds me of the Emre Can transfer to Liverpool last year. I did an internship in their editorial department back then and they said about a month before the actual transfer happened, that the Can camp told them already that he is leaving for Liverpool. Would add to the thing Andy Mitten said, that two deals were already in the pipeline and just need approval. We will probably find out after the Cup Final on Saturday ...

Thanks for that guys. Much appreciated.

I know Barca is the best club in the world right now.. But ain't no player of quality signing for them in the summer to wait until January to play. Especially Gundogan who still needs games to get back to his best.

if @Cro says deal is practically done I believe him. :)

It's just what I heard in that regard, can't guarantee anything at all. They usually don't confirm a deal without serious proof. They do speculate about transfers, but a confirmation is another thing. Also, it just would make sense to me. We are in the market for that kind of player, Gündogan claimed in the past to have a soft spot for us, Andy Mitten said that we already agreed two deals, who just need confirmation and it's a fact that Gündogan leaves this summer for a reasonable price.

I personally think that it could go really fast after the DFB Cup Final on Saturday.

God, I sound like one of those muppets ...

You are.

Wasn't that long ago a lot of United fans didn't rate him or that he wasn't worth the risk but now that Barca, Real and Bayern want him everyone is going on about him

It seems to me its the deal which is just waiting to be announced and we have wrapped it up. Or I'm just hoping for it. :)
I wonder what's that 2nd deal which is agreed.

Metro say this weekend. Although I will add that they quote the Express in their article, and also lets not forget it's the fecking Metro.

They are doing the same with Rooney, he wasn't good for us all season long but now that rumors of other strikers appeared, Rooney is a reference in striking.

I don't think he is the player we need, imo we need a strong box-to-box player like Vidal and a replacement for Carrick in the holding midfielder position.
