Óliver Torres - Another Spanish Midfield Maestro

Indeed.

The pain of being a feeder club. We get more talk on the transfer forums when we make a good European game than in the football forum. In this case we can't even make money, he's here on loan.

Hector Herrera, Martins Indi, Martinez and Casemiro would all look good in our team. Wouldn't mind at all if LVG raided the Porto squad over the summer. The win will do wonders for Lopetegui's reputation also

Hector Herrera isn't a great player. Lots of lung and heart, but he can be terrible in the simplest things. There was a moment on this game where he made a great tackle and then failed an easy pass for Brahimi who had space on the left and could be a dangerous play. That's him summed up in a 3 seconds moment of the game.

He's been one of Porto's best players this season, if not their best. Their fans love him. Porto are definitely interested if Atletico are willing to sell.

He was class against Bayern, just so smooth on the ball and a feisty bugger in midfield, more than I expected when I first saw him a couple of years ago.

Barca have first dibs on him and if they get koke he'll prob replace him at Athletico. He'd be brilliant here. Him and Gundogan fighting for a place would be a great summers business for us :)

Recorded the game primarily to see how he's doing. Wasn't disappointed. Still down as a future BPiTW in my book.

People used to say that a deal with Barcelona was already done. Is that a thing of the past given their ban?

There was that rumour, as part of the Villa deal, but it has been dismissed as rubbish. Atletico is in charge of his future.

I'd guess not a chance Atletico would sell, and if they did, there'd be a huge list of interested parties.

I'm not so sure. He'd be expensive. Barca want Koke, Real dont need him, PSG dont need him, City wont base a CM rebuild on him, Bayern prob get Reus......

Nope, they only have first option. But even that is not clear, some say the first option they got was on Saul when Atletico got Villa for next to nothing.

Expect Ballague to clear this up in his own clear as mud wishy washy cant't see anything as I'm caught in a sandstorm kinda way....

There are always plenty of scouts in big European matches, particularly if it will involve a selling club like Porto. They may not have went looking for a specific player but rather to see what may show up. Say that unknown Hernâni fellow who came in on the last 12 minutes had made a brilliant game (in fact he didn't touch the ball, I think)? No one would go there to scout a fringe player who could or not be called to play, they may just want to see what teams have to show in general and collect ideas for the future.

As for specific players, Torres, Brahimi, Indi, Casemiro, Herrera, Jackson Martínez are all players whom big clubs will certainly be following at the moment.

Jackson may be at an age where we can only expect some short or mid-term return, but at a set €35m he's almost a bargain based on current ability. He'd have to regress severely fast to not be worth that kind of money.

Apparently Barca has first option, and he's just one of those midfield talets a ton of big clubs would want.

I'm not saying it would happen, but City can easily play him in CM, next to a DM (especally if Toure leaves). Ditto Bayern. They are spoilt for choice, but Schweini, Alonso etc, are all coming to the latter end of their careers etc. We could definitely use him etc.

And as you mentioned, I don't think Porto would easily pay the asking price, IMO.

Reminds me of the Thiago thread we rarely seem to get the more dreamer muppet transfers in like this lad. We seem to be more out of the blue in our additions. I'd really like Koke or this lad in. Something tells me I'll be dissapointed and it will be someone less shiny.

Why are we discussing Atletico selling him? They're not Wigan, they can keep their best players, even more so prospects.

Yeah, my current man crush is Verratti.

Are we now saying Man United cannot take players from Athletico who's average wage is prob about 20k a week........

Because Atletico cannot possibly offer them more than 20k a week if they want to keep them?

Of course we can sign him if we want, it's not going to be easy though. I'm pretty sure someone like Koke wouldn't come here though despite playing for a minor Atletico team at the minute.

I'm certain of two things:

-He'll become world class
-He'll stay in Atletico for another few years and then go to Barcelona.

Well if Koke stays for example (more than likely given the Barca transfer ban) then this lad can either stay on loan at Porto or perhaps come to Man United where he could effectively replace Paul Scholes as the beating flamboyant heart of this, the most romantic of footballing giants.

IF their players want to come here, we don't need their approval. Just pay the release clauses and be done with it.

Tiago is 33, Gabi 31 and has already been rested/subbed off/on a bit this season. Koke, Oliver Torres and Saul are their future, will get more than enough playing time in the near future, they are from their own academy, love the club, the fans love them, they are not leaving anytime soon. Koke has already rejected a move to us, Chelsea and Barca. Atletico has increased his wages 3 times in the last 18 months. They have now also almost doubled Simeone's wages.
Then Simeone has been doing really well with young players, those players know he and Atletico are the best thing which can happen to them right now regarding their development.
In short: no chance of them leaving.

I am not saying they will never leave, but they won't leave anytime soon as Atletico have shown they will spend money on ppl they want to keep.

They are a bit like Scholes, a player who is from the own youth, just wants to play football and loves the club. Scholes wasn't among our top earners and in the 90s and early 2000 Italian clubs paid higher wages than United. Inter were prepared to offer him and us more than enough money, but neither us nor Scholes were interested. Similar with Koke et al and Atletico now.

I think he will eventually replace Turan on the right. Atletico like to play defensive minded players in the middle.

Yeah if the players want to move and their release clause are met there's not much Atletico can do tbh.

Simeone is the key. If he moves on they are fecked. I can see us going for Torres and him, Herrera, Mata and Verratti are players that would fit in our system and that can be really good under pressure and keep possession.

I'm sure, barring any serious injury, that this lad will become world class.

Lopetegui tried that earlier this season, and it did not work out well at all. Oliver is a pure creative midfielder type, not particularly fast but incredibly skilled with his dribbling, short and long passing.
Playing on the wings, especially in a 4-4-2, would be a huge waste of talent.

Dont Barca have 1st option on this guy? thought I read they wanted it as part of the deal which saw David Villa moving there a few seasons back.

What about his defensive abilities?

Both him and Saul have a €24 million buyout clause (reportedly) on contracts that run till 2018. There probably won't be a big competition for his signature this summer, and the amount seems very reasonable for a player who's the most talented Spanish midfielder since Thiago. If Ander can keep developing in the 60 meter box to box role, Oliver can be the furthest forward in our cultured midfield 3 with Memphis and Shaw running down the flanks. Plus, there's the added benefit of having another Atletico amigo for David.

----Oliver-----------------------Ander----

-----------------Carrick----------

What about his defensive abilities?

He's improving gradually but is not very good naturally in terms of his positioning like say Xavi. Oliver is very much like a younger Iniesta or Thiago in his playing style, and curtailing his creative flair by burdening him with extra defensive responsibilities at a young age might not be the brightest idea. Like those two he has the potential to become better, but it might never be his forte so you have to adjust your tactics accordingly.

Barca and Real can not fit every quality Spanish player in their squads.

Yep. Real already have Isco and James who play in similar positions to Oliver. Barcelona is another matter with the decline of Xavi and Iniesta, but they have the transfer ban, plus they generally prefer bringing in La Masia midfielders.
