Óliver Torres - Another Spanish Midfield Maestro

I would love it if we signed him, but he's a boyhood Barca fan and I can only see him leaving for Barcelona.

I'd never heard of Balague before signing up to this forum. That was 7 years ago and I've still not heard of him doing anything but chatting absolute, 100% shite.

So Balague seems to think Barcelona have first option on this kid as part of the Villa deal:

"Why so cheap? I found out that Barcelona have a first option on [18-year-old Atletico midfielder] Oliver Torres."

He found out? Does he mean he read it in an article in AS a couple of weeks ago?

Torres' "people" have already denied it.
Torres is part owned by Mendes' investment group.

However, Torres says he always loved watching Barcelona as a kid.

Of course they'll be in the driving seat if they come in for him in a year or two. That's not the same as a commitment from Torres, even if Atletico have promised to let them know when he's ready to leave - as if they wouldn't have done that anyway.

Thiago's departure makes Barca an even more attractive destination for Torres. He's a step above any of their own youth prospects in midfield, and with Alcantara gone there's no obvious obstacle to the sort of development and game time he would be looking for if he went there in a season or so.

I wouldn't mind them getting him if it meant they didn't go for Gundogan. Because we don't want any obstacles to Bayern's groping fingers, do we...

Though it would be a shame to see them stamp that beautiful long passing out of his game the way they have with Fabregas.

Took him just 1 minute to score against Betis tonight. Koke set up the goal but this is what Villa had to say about this kid ''[Torres] has a fantastic future ahead of him and that's why it's important not to rush him.
"He put in a great performance today and people will have many, many years to enjoy this lad. We have to be patient as he has all he needs to be a special player."

feck Koke and Herrera......Moyes will hopefully start sniffing around lining up this big time charlie

He's hardly played. He got a start today, in the Copa, but he didn't do much.

Any idea why he hasn't played?

Simeone prefers hard workers in the middle of the pitch, ie. Gabi and Mario Suárez/Tiago, and reserves the wings for the more creative players (as wide mids instead of out-and-out wingers), ie. Koke and Arda Turan/Raúl García... Óliver has started 1 game on the left side and had 7 sub appearances mostly coming on for one of those 3 wide players (both left and right), though he's naturally more at ease in the centre IMO.

Atletico were looking at January loan deals for him, in Liga 1. However, Simeone has apparently said he'd rather keep him and that he wants him to stay at Atletico, where he can be introduced slowly, without pressure and according to Simeone's timing.

Personally I thought somewhere like Rayo Vallecano would be good for him - they play nice football and need players. Unfortunately the relegation dogfight they're in would propbably have ruled it out, even if Simeone hadn't.

I think they are just keeping him under wraps and developing slowly. He does seem to have a bit of an ego already which I do not think Simeone likes.

I only saw the highlights of the Atletico - Oporto game, but he got 60 minutes in that and apparently played well. Simeone was pleased with him after the match, "He played the game we asked him to. Important to the attack. A lot of intensity."

If by cheeky you mean €30 million (his buyout), sure. He's being recalled to the first team along with Deulofeu this summer
you never know if there is a 30m buyout clause expect 35 from moyes (or he might do a fabregas and put in an insultingly low bid)... the only thing im confident of is he will be a hell of a player (almost certainly not for us though)

He went to Villarreal!? Had no idea.

EDIT: Only on loan. Nailed on for Barcelona should he reach his potential anyway, looks a beautiful little player.

We should set aside 72m€ of our "warchest" to pilferage Atletico and activate the buyout clauses of Oliver, Saul, Manquillo. Midfield and RB sorted for the next decade. Infact feck that. Throw the whole "warchest" at them and include Costa + Koke in the deal.

Wasn't there something posted on here recently from some expert who was basically saying that Saul isn't that good? Oliver looks class but can't remember seeing Manquillo.

Costa and Koke both look like they'd be top additions for us in this summer. Costa wasn't at his best against Madrid at the weekend but you could just see that he's such a handful for even the top teams. He reminds me a bit of Suarez in the way he can wriggle away from people with quick turns and the like.

Saul Niguez was certainly questionable when they were using him at CB. They put him back into midfield against Valencia and Rayo pick up a surprise win and he plays well again. That says it all

Umm I don't know who said Saul isn't that good. He's just had a bad couple of months playing out of position for the utter dogshite Vallecano. But that is kind of expected from a player who's still only 19, he will be inconsistent at times but his ceiling is very high. He was very good on loan at the start of the season but the obsession with playing him in defence when he's infact a CDM must've had some effect on his performance I guess. His progression through the years has been almost identical to Oliver's - they even got called up to the U-21 Spain team at the same time and he has 6 caps already. But I guess being a more flash player Oliver inevitably got more praise. I think Saul could be even better than Javi Martinez if he keeps developing. Would be a very good addition to us but he might have some teething issues at first like De Gea.

Manquillo is one third of Atletico's golden trio that have come through the academy at the same time. As with most young defenders he has a mistake in him at times - but he's a very good, defensively solid RB. If I were to compare him I'd liken Manquillo to Chelsea's Azpelecueta - a very well rounded right back who's been one of the best in the league this season. Like Saul he will only improve and get more consistent with regular first team playing time.

One interesting thing is that apparently David Gill made a few trips to Atletico's academy after we signed up De Gea to agree terms with some other youth players. Even back in 2012 when most fans didn't know of Oliver we seemed to be really interested in him and scouted him though 2011/ 2012.

Hindsight's a bitch but had we signed a 17 year old Oliver then it would've been for a pittance and we'd have solved maybe one half of our CM conundrum for the next decade.

Mendes signed him instead - half of him at least. He's one of the Mendes/Kenyon/Lim group of prospects/projects.

Hmm to be fair I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Mendes even owns half of Atletico. Doyen has given them a lot of financial aid in the past and even owned rights to some of their players. It's been a meteoric rise for him really - from part time DJ to representing some of the most coveted players in the world. Incredible to think his claim to fame was his representation of CR at United just 10 years ago.

PS : Isn't Lim a United fan ? What's he doing trying to get a stake in Valencia now and Liverpool in 2010 ?

I think he's more United profiteer than a fan. He owns United-themed bars etc. but I suspect that if Huddersfield Town were the most popular team in Asia he'd probably be behind them instead.

Hmm... The only one in this page ?

That's why I asked mate. If you like this video and have 5 minutes to spare you should check his video on the OP - The Maestro of La Rojita. His long balls and 2 half volley cross-field passes on that one are insane. :D

Ok I thought he was a real part apart from just owning a stake in Redcafe bars.

Oliver Torres seals Porto loan deal

Solius said:
This is a message for future Solius. Quote this in the future when he's an amazing player. We should have signed him, damnit!

I never saw him play, so is he an amazing player?

I suppose he's good, from reading other people's opinions on him around here, but am curious as if he could add some steel as a central midfielder or is mostly an offensive player. I ask this because we're only getting him on a 1-year-loan without buying option as a special request from our manager (who previously managed him on Spain U20 and U21) and I'd hate for him to play at the expense of Quintero and delay the progression of one of our players, let alone at the command of a totally unproven manager. We've already "lost" (sold cheap) Iturbe to poor management, I don't want any more of it.

So can he play a some sort of more creative Moutinho/Meireles role? Or would a midfield trio like this:

-------DM---------
------------Torres-
----Quintero-------

...be too lightweight? Quintero is very poor at defending, from what I've seen so far.

Or is the only realistic option to have him in Quintero's place and a more balanced midfielder like Hector Herrera behind him?

He is too inexperienced and to raw for United. Also to have any chance of succeeding in Prem he needs to add some steel to his game. Porto move is ideal for him to develop.
