Ángel Di María | Transferred to PSG

I don't think that's an unjust concern. On paper, our attack is clearly lacking behind Chelsea/Arsenal/City's attack. Nevermind the likes of Barca/Madrid/Bayern.

If we can get Pedro, that would obviously improve things. But its still not ideal. A lot is going to ride on Memphis, and how quickly he settles.
Rooney and mata need to step it up. Rooney to his 09 form, and Mata to his Chelsea form.

Because we paid £52m plus bonuses to Real Madrid on the basis of a season where he was one of the best players in the world and crucial for them. PSG will be buying him after terrible season in which he lacked motivation and played very badly in 80 per cent of games. Also, he's 27 now and will be turning 28 in 6 months time and a player who's heavily reliant on pace will always take a hit when he passes 30 - there's depreciation here and I'd actually say that it's progressing even quicker for a footballer between 27 and 30 than for a car. 26-27 is still reasonably young, 28-29 is pushing it and 30 is an age when you no longer pay record fee unless it's Ronaldo/Zidane/Messi.

Baffles me how people think that his value should stay the same when he's been crap for almost a year. Actually I genuinely feel that PSG are the ones being mugged here if they're paying £46m for Di Maria. PSG are bailing us out really, £6m loss on a player we overpaid for who has been ridiculously bad towards the end of last season.

If PSG want him that badly, they should pay top whack. It's not like they're poor and they did cough up a fortune for that chump Luiz. Moreover, Di Maria just had a very good showing the the Copa America. It's about time United started digging their heels in over transfers.

My biggest gripe with Di Maria was that he lost the ball a lot. Yes, Pedro is a downgrade to ADM as an individual but I think he'll suit our possession based system better. I forgot about the whole Super Cup thing that Barca want to keep him for so you're totally right.
Again this assumption that because pedro plays for barca he'll never lose the ball.

it will truly be funny to see people blast pedro for the exact same mistakes di maria made.

We are, getting £46m for nearly 28-year old Di Maria is excellent business from our perspective after last season.

It doesn't really work like you suggest. Could Bayern push us to £80m for Schweinsteiger because we wanted him? Could PSV ask for £50m for Depay? No, that you want a player doesn't mean you'll overpay. 95 per cent transfers are concluded because one team wants another team's player. PSG will have set their valuation and to be fair if £46m is that then there's no point negotiating because they're overpaying by at least £10m already.

so because utd overpaid for him we should be gentlemen and sell Di maria at market value while ensuring we make a loss ?

Christ, some of you are making no sense at all. He should of gone for more, if we can get ripped off why can't we rip them off ?

We are over De Gea because he is invaluable. Maybe LvG thinks Di Maria did not put the performances in to justify fighting too hard.

What if they're not that desperate to buy? Perhaps we were more desperate to sell... It's a difficult game to be fair, but we did get rid of a player that we didn't want to keep. Had he played well last season then obviously PSG would've had to bid significantly higher to entice us to sell.

not surprised if he goes he found it hard to get ahead of Ashley Young, his house was robbed etc.

he would be a real coward in my eyes but he will have his reasons I guess. Anyway he would have been played out wide where he's too inconsistent so I can't see him getting near to top class, we could always play one of our youngsters, currently the most promising Pereira or hopefully Januzaj getting back to form. Lingard also an option I like.

If we buy someone with more natural abilities to play there like Pedro or perhaps Reus or Griezmann I'd be more than happy but if nobody comes I can't wait to see more of the youngsters..

Not about being gentleman just have to accept the reality of the situation, we massively overpaid, he is desperate to leave and if we don't accept a loss we will be stuck with a player who will most likely sulk and rot on the bench and then leave for an even bigger loss.

PSG know all that so they are not going to pay what we paid, completely unrealistic to think we can rip them off as well.

he's not gone yet. do you know how much united paid? do you know what PSG are offering? i mean really paid not what's been reported. and what is "market value" on a player and who sets it?

The mark of a good guy though is putting his family's happiness above his own career and by all accounts his wife hated it here
The mark of a great guy is doing all that with professionalism vs skipping flights to avoid teammates etc.

It's absolute nonsense to think that his value should have raised after last season. Consider the following:

1) In 2014 he was transferred on the back of excellent season in which he was the best player in Champions League final and racked up very good numbers for Real Madrid. He was also decent at the World Cup although below his club level. In 2015 he's being transfered after terrible season in which he failed to settle in a number of positions and got gradually worse as the season progressed.

2) In 2014 he was 26-year old going on 27, at the minute he's 27-year old going on 28. While that might not seem like a lot you have to consider that a player of his profile, who relies mostly on bursts of pace and trickery, will probably keep going strong until 30-31, at best 32. So you can knock off 1 out of 5 seasons he had left in him when we bought him.

While the second bit is probably worth around £4m to £6m the first fact should have depreciated his value a lot more. Did you also think Kaka was still a £55m player after two years at Real Madrid? Because they seemed to think he was worth nothing to them. Was Torres worth £50m after his first 18 months at Chelsea? Should Liverpool have hold out for £35m for Carroll when they sold him to West Ham because they bought him for £35m? Were Chelsea capable of getting £31m back for Shevchenko?

It seems like people just want to moan for the sake of it. We're selling a player who was terrible for the past 6 months, who doesn't want to be there, who has 3-4 seasons left in him because he turns completely shit and then you can ship him off to Milan for £3m, for £46m which is in top 5 of highest evers transfers from Premier League abroad. If we sold Valencia to Real Madrid for £95m tomorrow there'd be people moaning that it wasn't a hundred.

Schweinsteiger is over 30 and Memphis hasn't done a whole lot yet on the world stage. The fees paid were fair, especially as other clubs wanted Memphis. Anyway, perhaps you're right but I'm just a bit pissed off that we paid a fortune for Di Maria and ended up with a player who lasted a season.

His market value is £100m. He was £50m last year but his value has risen due to the fact that he has proven that he can play well in Premier League which is the pinnacle of football… erm, he actually hasn't.

And nearly £50m for a 28-year old Di Maria who has been terrible for a year isn't fair? Seriously mate, getting over 80 per cent money back for him is excellent for us and it is a relief that we're not going to lose £52m on this bugger.

PSG seem pretty keen, if you believe what you read in the papers (I know). All in all, I'll be glad when he's gone and the season starts up.

He's had a miserable was desperate to leave. We're not going to get what we paid which was too high anyway. 45-50 million and a 10 million loss is fine.

Just as long as we don't get Cavani as part of the deal.

Wow, but I thought everyone on here said he joined United for the love of the club and not because they paid the most money or something. What happened to that love a year later? :(

They seem desperate to sign him and they have loads of cash, I wouldn't be against telling them they have to pay what we did or we're happy to keep him. That said 45 million is good business really, at least we're getting most of the money back whereas Veron we sold for almost half the price.

Where are people getting the fees from? Almost £50m would be a great price to get imo.

Cavani I don't want either. Funnily Di Maria's situation sort of resembles Falcao's and people were going mad at the sheer thought of us paying £40m for him - which would have been around his market value last year. One bad season really affects value.

I base my assumption of Pedro losing the ball less than Di Maria because he, you know, loses the ball less than Di Maria.

£46m is what's been widely reported.
I'd definitely be happy with that overall. Especially if we can get a good replacement in. Does Griezmann have one of those stupid £999m release clauses or is his sensible enough that we could give it a go? :D

That`s the Problem. If Memphis lives up to the Hype, Rooney and Mata can find their best form again and the Young Boys flourish we will be able to compete.
Too many "ifs".
And if we buy Pedro - will he be the solution? He might struggle as well.

I am happy with the Transfers so far but selling AdM and not replacing him with another standout attacking Player won`t come good for us.
We will finish top 4 and get into the CL Group stage (and out as well) but I do not consider us to compete for any title with out current attacking Option minus AdM.

Falcao will probably score plenty for the renties this season. It's in the stars.

I think the release clause is 43.5 Mio Pounds. So it would be wise to use the Money for AdM and get this guy. I cannot see Reus or Bale moving this summer.

Sunk cost fallacy.

Yeah that's definitely a fair fee, hopefully we're interested. A forward line of Memphis-Rooney-Griezmann would be lethal.

feck's sake. Cry for not having a world class match winner, get one, don't even give him a second season after he showed plenty of good performances and the ability to become one of the best players in the league. Just sad, and doesn't bode well on our ambition one bit.

It seems he's desperate to leave, though. Our biggest mistake seems to be in signing him in the first place.

Decry our lack of random made up shite like "match winner", sign a footballer player who plays rubbish for us and then sell him for almost 50 million.

I wanted Batistuta at United but in those days we didn't pay huge salaries. Although if I lived in a perfect world I'd love 7 or 8 local lads come through the ranks and the rest of the side made up of world stars. Or something. That said, I'd rather come second with a team made up of local lads than a treble winning all star team. Not everyone will agree but there you go. But for now, let's get Messi!

Go Manchester!
You don't really mean that, do you?!

I'd sell my own mother to win a treble once, you showboating, treble winning feckers! :(
