I'm not the Fideo biggest fan, but there's no reason to sell him

Maybe he asked to leave when LvG told him that he would have been the Young back-up for another season
If that is what LVG asked him, I am happy he has more ambition than to be frickin Young's backup.

Failure by the club or failure by the player?

Player, we somehow managed to strong arm Real Madrid into letting us keep a player(from Madrid) who has a year left on his contract (meaning we won't make a profit when we sell him), i doubt we would be shopping our record signing(which would definitely weaken our squad) without his permission/willingness.

But that's just me.

Our man following Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States, Sky Sports News HQ reporter Vinny O’Connor, has given an update on the future of reported Paris Saint-Germaintarget Angel Di Maria.

“We know there is interest from Paris Saint-Germain and we also know there has been contact between the two clubs,” he said.

“So far this hasn’t materialised into a deal between the two clubs and we understand Manchester United are not keen to sell Di Maria - that certainly seems to be the attitude of Louis van Gaal.

“It is also our understanding that a price tag of around 60 million euros might well be enough to prize Di Maria away from United.

“As it stands, though, there is no deal in place and Manchester United very much want to keep hold of Di Maria. That said, PSG are trying hard to prize him away.”

So we're not keen to sell, but would be open to it if we receive at least 60 million euros.

Even though PSG have supposed to have offered 65m

IF true, being willing to sell a player for somewhere around £14m less than you bought him for the summer before doesn't exactly suggest reluctance. If we genuinely didn't want to sell we'd either pick a massive, off-putting price, or just demand our money back.

not keen to sell but open to selling him? that sounds like we just want more money.

would like to see him have another season to turn it around, but i can't say i'd be too disappointed if it does go through.

If he is going we should ask for Zlatan on a free or for a years loan.
we need a target man badly and zlatan is up there with the best even though hes lost some ability to run in behind defenders. but would he be ok with playing second fiddle to rooney? or would that mean rooney would play just off the striker and almost like a CAM again? or would?

Rooney would have to sit on the bench.

Do we 'need' a target man?

And I dont ever want to see Rooney in midfield again.

Still think we need to give him at least another season to settle in here. We need players like him who can beat a man and bring an element of unpredictability to our side. The only case in which we should let him go is if LvG doesn't rate him and doesn't plan with him as a starter anyways, for a bench warmer he is way too expensive.

i think we need a target man who can hold up the ball and in van gaals words act as a focal point for the team to maintain possession in the oppositions half. i think it would be an upgrade to what we were doing with fellaini last year by adding someone who can also offer a greater goal threat.

You are right. Fellaini is essentially a less talented Zlatan so he could do a backup job up there.

This is no big issue, the guy barely showed up last season, and to get the majority of the fee back is good business if he wants to go.

Depay/Young, Pedro/Mata are perfect for the wings especially as three of them are versatile.

Get Pedro, get a CB, and get a striker then we are done and in far better shape than last season.

But Fellaini wasn't playing ST? and Rooney has been told he will play ST in a 433. You think Ibra can come and play the hybrid AM role Fellaini did last year? and if thats a yes, it leaves only 2 Midfield positions left. Basti/Carrick/Herrera/Blind/Morgan - Fighting for 2 positions?

It will take some time for our best lineup this year to be sorted out that midfield is difficult to name the starters now but if Adm leaves it should be young Rooney depay up front

If an apparantly unhappy ADM leaving means that Juan Mata gets more game time (even as a winger which I think is a waste of his skill) then i'm all for it. I like Di Maria but if he wants to go; he should submit a transfer request and we should get as much as possible for him.

:) well thats not going to happen. and 'zlatan doesnt do benches'. so maybe this is a dead end

What under performing captain with a suitable replacement has managed to keep his spot in a starting line-up in world football? especially under a meritocratic system (such as LVG's) it doesn't happen, talks of Rooney being undroppable are just untrue.

Agreed. A bit surprised at the reaction to it all really. I can understand people wanting Di Maria to have a second season here to turn it around and I do too. But if he goes, it's because he clearly doesn't fancy it. In which case, good riddance.

Is this the Zlatan thread?
rightly said..we are digressing.

but i imagine it would be in a 4-2-3-1 with rooney playing deeper. since we have better holding players now its possible to play that formation. but its not like we would play this week in week out. van gaal changes his tactics according to the opposition. hence my question earlier - who would be the main man rooney or 33 yr old zlatan? but nevermind. we can discuss this if zlatan arrives

I would have liked to see him stay and prove himself. But if he's that ready to quit after one season, then lets take the money and run. Considering the deal with Real included add-ons etc, I am sure we will just about break even.

yeah but given his performances for united for the last decade i dont think he would suddenyl be bad this season. imo rooney is even better when surrounded by better players. lets end this discussion here..its the di maria thread.

Di maria only ever played on the wing (apart from the first 2 months as a diamond, which we were never going to continue)

Yes, Depay on the left, Di Maria on the right and Rooney in the middle - so there's no way Depay would be able to replace ADM, when he is locked at the LW position.

Well Mata was on the right more anyway so if Memphis replaced Di Maria, it would be on the bench more wouldn't it (techinically speaking) :smirk:
But I don't see the need to directly replace Di maria, seeing as he had virtually no impact for the majority of last season. Looking to next season I never saw him as a big part of the team. Memphis and Mata have the wing positions locked down currently (in most peoples XI's), but Van Gaal also loves Young who is reliable. Then we might get Pedro. It's best to cut our losses with Di maria, get 50m or so back and then we'll see if we need to buy someone. I don't even think we do, even if we have the money to do it.
