It's harsh to drop Lingard but I think we need 3 physical central midfielders for this game. He should be back in the team for Huddersfield.

Fellaini could prove to be important in this.

    ———————-/DG———————/
    Val——-Jones——-Smalling———Shaw

    ———————matic—————-
    ———-Fella————Pogba——
    Sanchez ————Lukaku———-Martial

The same could be said about Lingard, why start him on the bench, and just give him a small cameo if he was not going to start him against Spurs?
Lingard's resting wasn't to the same degree as Martial's, though. That's why, to me, Martial seems more likely than Lingard. Of course, they could both end up starting, depending on our choice of formation, but I'm expecting Fellaini to join the midfield, leaving only one spot.

Not quite sure how anyone can do a lineup without Lingard.

In great scoring form, 12 goals this season, rested yesterday, started a similar big game at Arsenal and was excellent.
    No way he's not starting.

Certainly not going to be left out for Herrera who hasn't had a good 6months

    Finally someone gets it!!

No way Fellaini who has been absent from the team for a good while, just walks right back into the first team.

Where does this expectation or thought that Fellaini will come back into the team come from??

He is short of match fitness, so why play him in such a high profile match?

On paper we look good for this game. Man to man, we are a better team IMO. But the big question is: how are we going to approach it? If we go there showing too much respect and focusing only on defending and neutralizing their threats, we will probably come out with a drab draw or even lose. But if we go out there and play with gusto and attitude, we'll likely take the game

We usually play a 433 in the big games and with Herrera already playing 90 minutes yesterday, Fellaini's the only option. Lingard isn't really a true CM, so we end up being pretty open when he plays there. Away to Tottenham, taking a risk like that seems unlikely, but given Lingard's form, it's a possibility, I guess.

Not just harsh to drop Lingard, but just plain wrong, he is playing amazingly well at the moment, so why not allow that to carry on?

Especially at Wembley, where he has such a great record!

He simply has to start this game.

You talk about that formation, and fair enough, but a quick question, of those prior "big games", for how many of them were Pogba, Sanchez, Martial and Lingard all available to start??

I would say none of them, so looking back at those prior games is kind of irrelevant in this case.

Really looking forward to this. Loved our attitude in October's game against them. A win, and the 11-point cushion that would follow, could be a real bonus for our Champions League and FA cup attempts this spring. Pretty sure it will be one of the most physical battles of the season so far.

How do you think we'll line up then? 4231, with Lingard at #10 and Sanchez and Martial on the wings?

Purely for the positions they play in. Lingard is significantly better playing at #10 than he is playing wide, agreed? In a 4-3-3 there is no room for a #10 but there is a left forward.

    The best response so far.

    It's this straightforward.

    It's all about tactics.

Some people are failing to realize that at times, having a player in red hot form coming off the bench can be a massive weapon.

On the other hand, Jose might decide to bring Sanchez from the bench to ease him into the team.

Whatever the case might be, we seem to have a good problem here.

I think that Lingard is great playing in either role, and anyway you simply cannot drop someone who is this bang in form.

Under normal circumstances, you will be right but things take a different twist when you have just bought Alexis Sanchez.

Playing an in form Lingard from off the bench does not necessarily have to be a disadvantage.

I would not say both would start on the wings, and be wingers in the traditional sense, the width most likely will be provided by the full backs, thus allowing the pair of them to cut in, and come that bit more centrally.

I agree with you in regards to Sanchez, hence why both him and Lingard, alongside Martial and Lingard, just behind Lukaku should be played.

Just think about the possible interchanging between that forward line!
It sure would confuse the opposition defence!

Will go with a 4-2-3-1 like many here predicting.
    ------------DDG---------
    Valencia -- Jones -- Smalling -- Young
    ----Matic -- Pogba --
    --Lingard -- Sanchez -- Martial--
    --------Lukaku -----

    ------------De Gea------------
    Valencia Smalling Jones Young
    ---------Matic Pogba---------
    Sanchez---Lingard--- Martial
    ------------Lukaku------------

Would be huge to win this.

You are right in lots of ways; but the last couple of weeks seem, from a fans perspective, to have changed a lot. We now have the potential to field a decent defense, a powerful spine and a fecking lethal attack. Still, I guess prudence may prevail. It will tell a lot about Jose’s future intentions

    de Gea

    Valencia
    Jones
Smalling (Need to deal with the Kane ariel presence)
    Shaw

    Matic
    Pogba

    Lingard
    Sanchez
    Martial

    Lukaku

Pogba can have a field.day with Lukaku, Martial, Sanchez and Lingard if they are all commited to movement. I can't wait for Sanchez and Lingard to start playing together, I think there is something in that combination.

We haven't had joy against them away in the past 2 years. Bar that draw under LvG in his first season, we have been twatted for 6 goals in 2 games.

I feel far more confident now with Sanchez, and the likes of Martial and Lingard in blistering form. Lukaku seems to be quietly regaining confidence as well.

Jose has always managed to find a way to keep Kane quiet in our home games, and if we can do that at Wembley, Spurs don't stand a chance against our counters.

Well we are playing them at a neutral venue, rather than away so that helps a fair bit I think, as neither club will be at home.

I hope that we really go for it, as apart from Kane and Son, they are not really all that special, so we really should be beating them.

Kane didn't play at OT this season

    Pragmatic:
    --------------De Gea
    ----Lindelof--Jones--Smalling
    Valencia--Matic--Pogba--Young
    -one of:Fellaini/Lingard/Mata
    ------Sanchez--Lukaku

    Or:
    ------------De Gea
    Valencia--Jones--Smalling--Young
    ---------Matic--Pogba
    Sanchez--Lingard--Martial
    -----------Lukaku

I think Martial will definitely start as he was rested. So 343 doesn't really work because Sanchez and Lukaku will both also start, which leaves only one place for either Martial, Mata, Lingard, Fellaini or Herrera (in a deeper role). I think 4231/433 is likely and the only question for me is whether Lingard or Fellaini starts.

I hope you do ... Spurs generally struggle against teams that come playing for a draw.

Do people actually think we'll play 2 in midfield? Jose played Bailly infront of 5 defenders last season if I remember right.

That's not even a question for me. Lingard's the in-form player in this team whereas Fellaini has barely played in months. Not to mention Lingard even before this hot streak was a better counter-attacking option.

I could see him being dropped for Fellaini or Herrera in a game like this. Wouldn't be in favour of it, but it's not inconceivable.

Arrogant as usual. Spurs have lost against Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd this season - surely we are going to compete in this game. Saying that, we have a superior manager when it comes to tactics on every day, so our/his approach will be interesting to see. A win for us will be very hard, the draw seems like an easy conclusion. Spurs seldom lose at home, we seldom lose games.

Will be tight and aggressive without a doubt. If the very limited Trippier and Sissoko plays, it will only benefit us. Smalling will have a great time heading away all those crosses.

Completely different this year IMO. We're in much better form, they aren't at WHL anymore. We can go there and do well.

There is zero chance of Fellaini starting this match, so I don't see why his name is being mentioned.
He has not played in a good long while, is lacking match fitness, so why on earth would José pick him for such a match?

Plus why are people leaving out Lingard, he is bang on form, and plays well at Wembley, so it is just crazy to think that anyone would seriously consider not playing him.

    Like the mighty Newport County?

Lol ... different kettle of fish entirely. First it was away from home, second the pitch was not great, third we didn't start with our best XI.

But these things apart, you're right.

Arrogant to hope that United play an open game that suits Spurs? Lol ... you have a strange definition of "arrogant".
