whats Mike Dean's recent history with us? I know we tend to lose when he refs.

We're gonna lose 2-0. They have better players than us and a lot of them are in good form and they simply play better football than us right now. If we get anything from this game we'll probably be lucky to have done so. And LvG has already had this quarter's quota of surprising victories, so time to go back to our downward, fiery spiral we were carving before our good run.

    Ever the optimist.

Am I the only one who thinks Varela deserves to start? He made one error, but there were matches where he was one of our best players and never gave up unlike the rest of the team? I know it is Van Gaal and all, but I really do think we play better with him in the team. IMO he is better than Valencia offensively and he isn't THAT bad defensively.

I agree with you. But LVG probably thinks of Varela the same way he thought of Rafeal

I agree. But who knows, maybe Spurs or Arse will slip up...

Arsenal have the easiest run-in of all teams - so forget about them. Those matches are simply too easy for Arsenal to drop a lot of points. If a team beats Leicester, it will be Arsenal.

I think Tony should star at RB. With the way Spurs press, the last thing we need is not to be able to compete physically. We will definitely lose if that is the case.

We will tonk them thus making Leicester's run towards glory easier.

I fancy our chances in this game. Van Gaal, apart from Arsenal early on in the season, has a good record against the top 6, and always seems to produce the goods.

Spurs have a very high energy team, and I think we do too, providing we play the right team. Probably pan out similar to Liverpool vs Spurs last week.

I can see Van Gaal making possibly two changes. Herrera for Carrick and Valencia for Darmian. At least that's what I'd want to see anyway. As I mentioned, because Spurs are full of energy, we should be looking to field a team who can match that.

    I would go with:

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Blind Rojo
    Schneiderlin Herrera
    Mata Lingard Martial
    Rashford

Romero Jones Darmian Carrick Fellaini Young Depay

Be a close game, but I think if we can nick the first goal, we can keep a clean sheet like we did against Everton and Man City.

    Prediction:

Tottenham Hotspur 0 - 2 Manchester United (Lingard, Mata)

I would not give him the chance in such a high profile game again. He showed some horrible defensive instincts in that situation vs Coutinho and overall looks iffy positioning-wise. He can put in a good tackle but he's so weak physically and is easily bullied. He's done better offensively which is good in games where we're mostly in possession and need an outlet. But I don't think that's what we require for this game where we're likely to be on the back-foot for the most part.

was gonna say! The memory of that horror show v Liverpool is still very much in the mind.

It was a shocking display, not just the moment Coutinho monstered him,but everything up to that too.

Mourinho would surely look to bring a better right back in than we have.

Win this and things are looking rosey for fourth spot.

As long as Fellaini doesnt start in CM, then we`ll have a chance

Started in midfield for us last year against Spurs and was arguably our best player. That was in a 433, though. Doubt he'll on Sunday anyway. Schneiderlin has been doing well over the last couple of games, and he put Herrera on for Carrick instead of Fellaini last week against Everton.

    My expected Spurs line-up:

    ---------------- Lloris
    Walker - Alderweireld - Wimmer* - Rose
    --------- Dier - Dembele
    Lamela ----- Alli ----- Ericksen
    -------------- Kane

    * Vertonghen has been back in training, but I'd guess that he might be deemed not yet fit enough to risk disturbing what has been a decent CB partnership during his absence.

I know its best to stay pessimistic, but if we win this one and our game in hand against Palace, we could be within 3 points of Spurs. Which is insane to think with how our respective seasons have gone... such fine margins.

Such an average team for one challenging for the title. Ridiculous that LVG has managed to 'build' something worse and we'll get easily beaten on Sunday.

I'm confident on this one. What I fear is Villa at home.

Villa at home should be easy, because it is a home game.
Our home form is actually pretty damn good.
It's our away form which is dismal. And the next game, is away.

How does "average" square with having scored the most goals and conceded the fewest?

I commend your optimism but Spurs not scoring at home?? United to score 2?? I can't see us coming out the other end unscathed like that.

I hope we Drop Carrick & Rojo. Start with Mensah & Herrera. Very hard game, I see it going 2-1 either way.

It's mention every match thread and it's probably been mentioned already but..

How come Utd rarely play on Saturdays? Has Woody negotiated a few more million out of the TV deal or whhhat?

How close is CBJ to getting a game?

Edit: It'll be interesting to see what the pecking order is between himeself, Rojo, and TFM when they are all fit.

think this will be a good game and our success could rest on whether we can keep Kane quiet again

I have a feeling will we see Rooney straight back in a 10 with Lingard on the right....Mata to make way.

I'd like to see us lineup like

    --------------------------------------------DDG---------------------------------------------------
    Darmian--------------------Smalling-----------------Blind-------------------CBJ/Fosu-Mensah
    ---------------------------------------Schneiderlein-----------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------Herrera--------------------Rooney------------------------------------
    Memphis-----------------------------Rashford-------------------------------------------Martial

Average compared to title challenging teams of the past in my opinion. I think even your Modric, Bale, VDV side was better. You're better than us but let's face it it's the worst United team of the last 25 years.

I'd love to see a diamond in this game.

One of our forwards likes to drift left. The other one likes to drift right. Our wingers are shit, but our fullbacks are converted attackers who like to bomb forward. One of our best youth prospects is a defender-come-midfielder who adds height to an otherwise short defence. Our midfielders are okay but need to play close to each other because they can't dominate the middle physically.

The squad is crying out to play a 4-diamond-2. The first XI picks itself at the moment, imo.

    ---Martial-----------Rashford

    ------------Mata
    ------Herrera--Schneiderlin
    ------------TFM

    Young--Blind--Smalling--Valencia

    -----------DDG

    De Gea
    Fosu-Mensah Smalling Blind CBJ

Van Gaal has ruled Rooney out. He'll play for U21's on Monday.

Speaking to a couple Of Spurs fans today at work they seem to be very confident throwing out 3-1 and 4-1 scorelines :(

Win tomorrow and we are 6 points behind Spurs with a game in hand and 3 points behind Arsenal.
If it wasn't for fecking Leicester there would be mumblings of a title charge :(

Feck what they think. They always bottle it against us.

We've conceded 5 goals in the last 7 EPL games, so I don't know makes them think they'll score 3/4 against us. We're a very organised team and look pretty solid on the whole. If we can score they first goal, I think we'll win.

Our matches are low on variance. This means a single event could be decisive. Whoever scores the first goal becomes so important, and we've got De Gea.

Spurs fans are always confident, doesn't mean they're any good.

Realistically they should beat us because they've got a good system with an understanding between the players and 2 or 3 really good players. Having said that, most of their players are nothing more than "pretty decent" and we often show up strongest in the bigger games so it could all easily go either way.
