I guess that's got to do with the friendly nature of preseason matches. I hope I am wrong there:cool:. It also explains why the team tends to have a little more bite when Young and Welbeck are playing, even though both are average with their ball playing skills.

Welbeck is average with his ball playing skills? He's one of the most technically skilled players on the team!

I like this lineup, but Im not sure if Rojo will and should start. Blackett has done well. Who knows. I think LVG might want Rojo to have a full week of United training under his belt. Its Thursday already. I could see him being on the bench or maybe playing LWB.

    Love to see it.

    Wont though.

would rather just play the diamond drop mata play young at left back and it wouldn't be too bad

    Kagawa up front?

    (You meant Januzaj right?)

Either or would be perfect. I actually meant to have Mata upfront with Rooney, with Kagawa in the hole. I like the way those two play together and hope to see it at some point.

Cmon, he is decent not world class by any stretch of imagination. His stats and progression over the last couple of years are proof for that...

I didn't say he's world class, I said he's one of our technically superior players.

Get back to a 4-2-3-1 please!

    Rooney
    Kagawa Mata Januzaz
    Herrera Cleverley
    Rojo Smalling Jones Rafael

Rojo needs to be added in the selection. :)

There are better fellows in these seemingly average United squad. Lets disagree on Welbeck:D

Welbeck has better close control and dribbling ability than Rooney has! His link up play is amazing and he's our only attacker with speed and power. Hernandez is not as strong and skillful as Welbeck and he doesn't get involved in build up play.

We'll get dominated in the middle with that and Sunderland, despite being utterly terrible will constantly be on the attack.

We'd get overrun in midfield no matter who we play there until Carrick returns. Its just a straight choice between Cleverley's ineptness and Fletcher's decaying body.

Maybe 'lightweight' but he can't do any worse than Fletcher/Cleverley, so...

Hard to believe that we got 7th last season and sit here coming into this match with a must win feeling after losing on opening day. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I hope we get our act together and buy a few more players. Too much average in our squad.

This. I don't know about anyone else but my mentality has changed completely. If I looked at this fixture 18 months ago, I'm simply thinking 'how many will we win by?' I wouldn't always get it right but if we did hit the odd banana skin it'd be a shock. Now?

My overriding emotion since Moyes ruined our team is relief when we even score a goal. However, we will be mighty again this season I think. It won't be this game (although god I hope for a win) but LvG WILL get us back to being United again!

    I'd love to see

    Rooney Van Persie
    Mata
    Young Herrera Fletcher Januzaj
    Blackett Smalling Jones
    De Gea

    Fletcher>Cleverly, Mata>Kagawa, Van Persie>Wilson

If RVP is fit, then obviously in place of Januzaj. Rafa and Rojo to provide us with that much needed pace and proper defensive cover. None of that Young/Valencia/James/Januzaj/Lingard bs that we have on the wing backs. Those 5 are atrocious in defense and should never be seen defending in a United box. Just look at Januzaj and Young's attempt at defending the goals in the Swansea game, embarrassing.

Januzaj wasn't at fault for the first goal. Mata failed to track Ki and Januzaj was already covering another player. That's beside the point as he shouldn't be playing wingback anyways like you said.

Think Rojo will play in place of Blackett. He's left footed and more experienced. Blackett was playing because United had no left footed cb that could distribute. Evans was put to that task in pre season despite being right footed due to how much better than the others he was at distributing the ball. Smalling and Jones couldn't do that.

    -----------De Gea------------
    Rafael-Smalling-Jones-----Rojo
    --------Fellaini-Herrera-------
    Young------Mata------Januzaj
    -----------Rooney------------

    Please.

Yep. I would also have Rojo in place of Blackett, but we don't have any other decent options for that left wingback role, due to what I mentioned earlier.

    Rafael-Smalling-Jones-----Rojo
    --------Fellaini-Herrera-------
    Young------Mata------Januzaj
    -----------Rooney------------

    Please.
I would like to see that actually. Explosive wings with a solid midfield and quality upfront. Having said that, Rafa and Rojo have not had enough game time to be thrown in by LVG i think

    -----------De Gea------------
    Rafael-Smalling-Jones-----Rojo
    --------Fellaini-Herrera-------
    Young------Mata------Januzaj

    Please.
Pretty good, though with Fellaini out, we'll have Cleverley or Fletcher in there, think it'll be Cleverley.

    -------------- de gea ------------
    -- Jones - smalling* - Blackett --
    Valencia fletcher Herrera young
    -------------- Mata -------------
    --------- *Januzaj Rooney ------

    *Evans for smalling if fit.
    * januzaj free roam up top similar to Robben for Netherlands.
*rojo on for young as sub or if Valencia unfit, then as starter and young moves to replace Valencia spot.
*rvp on for the least effective player on the day from mata/januzaj/Rooney.

What are the chances of Rojo being played at LWB and us keeping the same back 3, allows young to move to the right where he's better.

Will probably know when van gaal gives his pre match conference. Really depends on the available players and fitness such as Evans and Valencia. We'll see.

It is either Young or Rafael on the right, and LWB is between Young, Rojo and James.

I think Young plays, and I think he will play on the right this time where he can naturally stay wide as the formation demands rather than be inclined to cut inside.

A combination of Blackett's inexperience and James' inexperience would be too big a risk. Either it'll be Rojo at LCB and James at LWB, or it'll be Blackett at LCB and Rojo at LWB.

I think Blackett will be preferred to James in the lineup. Reece James only featured in one preseason match against the weakest opposition before Luke Shaw's injury saw him get another start out of necessity. Blackett has consistently been selected by Van Gaal thus far.

My team thus looks like this:

    ---------------DeGea-----------------
    ----Jones----Smalling---Blackett----
    ---------Fletcher-----Herrera--------
    Young----------------------------Rojo
    ----------------Mata------------------
    -------RVP--------------Rooney------

My gut tells me that RVP will be fit for this one after Hernandez' weak showing last time out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Januzaj play if RVP isn't ready and to see Cleverley and Fletcher play a half each to keep energy levels up in midfield.

Rojo won't start for sure.I thought people already know what kind of manager LVG is?He won't throw players who had only 2-3 days of training into the squad.

    De Gea
    Rafael Jones Rojo James
    Fletcher Herrera
    Valencia Kagawa Januzaj
    Rooney

...assuming RvP not fit yet. If he is, Rooney can play No 10. LvG should ditch the 3 at the back system.

Are Rafael, Evans, Welbeck and RVP back for this one? If so i would go for this team

    53f5c87a263e8.jpg

Bench: Lindegaard, Young, Blackett, Cleverley, Januzaj, Kagawa, Van Persie

I think we should stick with 3-5-2 if Rafael can play. The only reason i see us play this formation is if we can have actual wing backs available because we cant play Young or Januzaj there. With Shaw being injured i cant see anyone other than Rojo playing there, i know he is supposed to play left CB but i think this would be best for the team. If we dont have wing backs available then i think we should look for another system.I think we should play Rojo on the wing and Evans at the back for this one. I chose Welbeck because of his speed and power. I think he fits this system much more than Hernandez. This will be a tough game and i think before we buy a proper cm to play next to Herrera its going to be difficult. I think players like Smalling, Jones and Rafael have to step up and show us how good they can be. We have seen what they can do when in form, we cant forget that but now its their time and they have too take it. I believe they can do it if given faith and a little time.
