he played as a ten right up until joining the senior team last year. i think most would agree that he's very much a 10 of the future, though of course there's debate as to whether he's ready for that position on a regular basis at this time.
Nope. He sporadically played as no 10 but majorly as a striker or on the wing before he joined the senior team.

Why?? He's completely unproven. He should be out wide or up top. Not a 10

So if someone is unproven, how are they ever meant to get experience? Is it too much against a team like the almighty Sunderland?

Look, I'm not saying he should definitely start at 10 but it's not even remotely as absurd as you're making it sound.

It mightn't be absurd. But given our distinctive lack of (good) wingers and the fact that mata and kagawa are good #10s, I would like to see him used as a wide forward in 433 or up top in a 352. just an opinion of course

Thats a strong lineup. Mata and Fletcher need to up the ante. They were very disappointing against Swansea. I also hope Kagawa gets some involvement if Mata's poor from carries on to this game.

I agree its a strong line up on paper, but how often did we say that last season and then watch absolute garbage?? I am not saying we will play garbage because I think we have a good manager. My main worry is the attitude of the players, I don't see any will or commitment.

I will say one thing, of all our loses last season, we played so much better on Saturday. That goes to show how bad David Moyes was

I think we'll be fine. In preseason United looked a confident team, full of energy and purpose. I think coming back to OT after the horrible season they endured under Moyes brought some nerves back. Once they got over this the performances will come, and hopefully soon.

Would you really start with Fellaini? Already in the first game he has swung his arm at somebody and could have got sent off. I do not think it is worth the risk of us going down to 10 men, especially as Sunderland will be fired up for this game as its their first home game of the season.

Based on the fact it is their first game I would suggest packing the midfield. Play a 3 with Fletcher, Herrera and Rooney. RVP up top on his own with Adnan and Young on the wings

Considering how poor Fletcher was against Swansea I would. The arm swing was an accident, he was throwing his arms up in frustration and accidentally caught the guy in the head. Can't believe people are scrutinizing that - complete accident.

Many times last season he swung an arm which could have got him sent off. I do not think it is worth the risk, especially as Sunderland will be fired up for their first home game. If we are going by pre-season then Fletcher has to start. He was magnificent in all the games. One average game does not mean dropping him. If it was the case we would not be selecting anyone apart from De Gea

He probably will stick with Fletcher (I mean he took Herrera off before him anyway), I just don't think that he should play. It was one average game but I think pre-season form has deceived us regarding Fletch. I don't think he can handle teams playing at 100% whereas in pre-season they were only going about 70% so he looked comfortable.

Good point regarding Fletcher. I think due to the lack of midfield resources we have pinned all our hopes on him and when he did have good games in pre-season we forgot they were just pre-season, not played at the same intensity as the league

Need to play at a higher tempo. And we should pin the opponent (Sunderland) back.

Chelsea pinned Burnley deep in their half. Their midfielders were in the final third at times. Check out the Fabregas assist.

Us against Swansea. Our midfielders played halfway between the midfield circle and the edge of the 18 yard box. And they were always passing the ball out wide or to the feet of the strikers. Passing for the sake of it.

    More vertical directness needed.

    I'd like this.

How mad that we all pick Young now  Fellaini id like to have a shot in this system again, Januzaj looked good when he came on in the last game so he deserves a start. Obvioulsy will need to be covered when going forward. Blackett has impressed me, not sure if he'd be the same switch to the otherside of the 3 but i'd like Rojo to start. Hopefully RVP is fit enough for start if not then Welbeck as Hernandez isn't filling me with confidence. Not sure why young Wilson isn't getting pushed like some youths, 45 mins wouldn't hurt him to cover injuries.

Need to press like we did in pre-season, midfields needs to ensure they get back enough to cover the defence and Mata needs to start being the little wizard we know he can be. Goals need to start flowing. We seem more dangerous when we play the higher tempo passing game we did in pre-season, that needs to be from the first whistle though. Need a convincing win from this one.

I dont think that rojo will be ready he needs to be training with first team and understand the role he plays. It is not like playing van Persie up front, anyway he will be on the bench.. I think our three CBs will be the same and either Rafa is fit so he will start on the right with young on the left or young on the right and James will get his game. It would be a huge risk to play rojo three days after his arrival at CB or LWB, he could be on the bench tho. Januzaj will hopefully start as second striker, he should have his fitness back now and will provide that balance in final third getting Mata/rooney/herrera into game.. RVP could start as well but I am not sure about his fitness and no even convinced with Roo-RVP up front, it will be a mess, they could score goals but the game will be unwatchable at times.. hope van Gaals will make the right decision

    Injured.

We might end up with Pearson/Rothwell on the bench for this game now Fellani injured and I'm not even sure if Cleverley is fit.Rojo won't be ready for this game he needs at least 1 week of training.Don't forget we're playing 3-5-2 he needs to adapt with the new formation as well.

I don't know who are back fit and who are still injured but in the worst case scenario (hope there'll be more players available anyway especially Rafael,Cleverley and Welbeck):
    De Gea
    Jones - Smalling - Blackett
    Young - Fletcher - Herrera - James
    Kagawa
    Rooney - Januzaj

    Subs:Amos,Keane,RVP,Mata,Pearson,Vermijl,Chicharito

Do people have return dates for players showing no return date on physioroom.com?

I haven't read anything at all. Not sure of anyone else has any info though. It'd be appreciated. Probably have to wait for LvG's press conference though.

What about Jones in central midfield for this one? Could play the ball winning midfielder role quite well. Then have Smalling, Rojo and Blackett (Evans if he's ready) as the defensive three.

I don't think it's just nerves, United needs pace in their line up to be effective. We looked a better team with Januzaj on the flanks. Our build up is too slow and the opponents can get in shape quickly to avert any harm. Hopefully Rojo can bring in some much needed pace if he is played as a LWB.

I agree that we need pace, but look at the preseason games again. Our passing was more intricate, more accurate and much quicker. We lacked pace but we had speed of thought in movement and passing. It disappeared against Valencia and Swansea at OT.

I guess that's got to do with the friendly nature of preseason matches. I hope I am wrong there:cool:. It also explains why the team tends to have a little more bite when Young and Welbeck are playing, even though both are average with their ball playing skills.

    Rooney Januzaj
    Mata
    Herrera Cleverly
    Young ------------------ Rafael
    Blackett Jones Smalling
    DDG
Fletcher for Clev if he's out of shape, I guess we'll see RvP at some point, either for Rooney or Januzaj.
I hope we see Kagawa, either starting instead of Mata or coming on, Rojo could get minutes if we're doing well.

    rafael smalling jones blackett young
    Fletcher Herrera
    kagawa
    rooney januzaj

5-3-2 stick to it (hope rafael is ready), I'd have liked to have gone 4-3-3 but our best player from the last game has gone out on loan, he with januzaj would have provided some real pace and trickery, if we don't get another winger in, of real quality, we lose the option to play 4-3-3 effectively, to me its as important as a midfielder.

rooney and januzaj will have freedom there, they will need to deliver, Januzaj will be they key man here, i think he will play and i think he will cause them problems but i do not see us winning.

    1-1
