    ---------------DDG------------------
    -----Smalling--------Blackett------
    Rafael--------Jones--------Young
    --------Rooney----Kagawa-------
    Januzaj--------RVP---------Mata

    ?

Something like this would be good. Essentially a 4-3-3 with Jones acting as a DMF? Though if Welbeck is fit, I'd start him over mata to add a bit more pace into our attack.

I was thinking more along these lines though, if LVG is going to stick with the 3-5-2.

    --------------------DDG--------
    ----------Smalling---Evans---Blackett------
    Rafael------------ Jones-------------------Young
    -----------Kagawa------Rooney---------
    ----------Januzaj-------Rvp----------

Basically Jones , Kagawa and Rooney acting as a midfield 3, with either kagawa or Rooney dropping into the whole while the other remains deep.

I can see us losing again, honestly. The team is in a state. Our only hope is some individual magic from one of our better players, such as Mata, RVP, Rooney or Januzaj. Either way, dreading this.

Aren't Valenica/Rafael out? No other choice apart from Young there and James on left... I'd rather him be on the right than the heart of midfield :nervous:

I'd rather see Young as RWB and James as LWB then but I think both are fit for this one? Correct me if I'm wrong

As cliched as it is, need Rooney to step up and have a captain's performance. But that doesn't mean he takes every shot and runs back into midfield at every chance.

Everyone will go into this moaning and saying we will lose and then we'll win 3-1.

 On what basis? Sunderland are a good team.

I know its a stretch. But I think LVG drilled them hard to prepare for Sunday. Sunderland will be tough i'm sure, but despite our "averageness" we should be better than Sunderland. I believe the Swansea defeat was nerves like LVG said, it will be out of their system. (here's to hoping)

Someone update please who is out and who is back ?

    According to the Telegraph:

    Carrick - Ankle
    Fellaini - Ankle
    Herrera - Ankle
    Lingard - Knee
    Welbeck - Knee
    Shaw - Hamstring
    Evans - Leg
    Anderson - Calf
    Rafael - Groin
    Rojo - Awaiting Work Permit

Feck that essentially means we'll see something like this:

    ---------------DDG-----------
    -----Smalling--Jones---Blackett-
    Valencia--Fletcher--Cleverley--Young
    ---------------Mata-----------------
    ----------Rooney--RVP--------------

Bench: Herandez, Januzaj, Kagawa, James, Keane, Lindegaard and somebody else like Powell or something....

If there ever was a team to be fecking worried about it is that one, no speed with the front 3, a midfield consisting of two of the worst midfielders in the league, a defense that is all over the place and lacks experience and Valencia and Young as wide options

    We are screwed :annoyed:

Johnson and Cattermole always play well against us. They will be compact and counter attack and be physical just like Swansea. Unless we have worked on our system and pressing and/or Rooney and RVP play well I think we will struggle again.

Can't wait to see Fletcher and Cleverley starting again. What a fantastic and useful summer this has been for Manchester United.

Sunderland away is a tough match any time, given the situation we are in, new system, injuries, etc then I am pretty worried about this game.

You just hope LvG puts RvP, Rooney, Mata, and Janujaz out from the start in the hope that their quality will see us through, because sure as hell there will be very little quality any where else in our side (DDG apart).

Individual players have to step up (basically what we have been relying on for 2-3 years now anyway) until we settle down a bit!

Even a Young dive will do :nervous:

Well here's to being the exception. :) So what are your thoughts about Sunday?

Won't see it due to work, but i'm worried for our midfield. If we pick up any more injuries, we're going to look very bare indeed and we're not even out of August yet.

Being a newbie all I can say is that it doesn't change a thing, some of the things you see on the mains are as ridiculous as the club facebook page. The main forum has never translated into quality posts, never.

I hope the ref has a good name, quite a lot of dirty tackles went punished in the Swansea game, especially on Januzaj. Don't need to add any more players to the injury list. Three points and no injuries would be a reasonable outcome.

We have been better away than at home, so not sure if we can take anything from that. And also getting revenge for last season. But good games from RVP Mata and Rooney will be crucial yeah.

Tended to see less meltdowns, but that was around 1-2 years BM (before Moyes).

Wonder if there's any chance Kagawa will get the nod over clev? Either way looking a less than ideal team. We've been very unlucky with injuries but we've also done very little to protect ourselves from this situation which in a lot of cases (Carrick injured a while ago, Rafael/Evans historic inj problems) always potentially leading to a tricky situation. Can only hope that the team are better prepared for the system and able to grind a win out.

Hope we go with Januzaj up top with Rooney, need the extra variety he brings.

    --------------De Gea--------------------

    Januzaj--------Rooney---------Welbeck--

To me the only solution is placing Jones in midfield. He played there quite a few times in 12/13 and surely , surely he cannot be worse than Fletcher. To all of you putting Fletcher in your line ups, just take a moment to remember how bad he was last season and the opening game this season. Whatever we do, we cannot start him this game.

On another note, I want to see Mata on the bench for this one. Cannot avoid any defensive feck ups due to him not tracking back properly

Jones is great as a third midfielder with a duty like marking a man, as shown when marking Ronaldo. He is a terrible passer not adding much else to midfield, but as you are thinking ..... we may not have much choice.

I've said for a while now we should try him there, as far back as the newbs. He has attributes that our other cms don't, and let's face it, he's not gonna get a look in behind the striker. I'd rather see him there than Rooney and with the right partner i could see him doing well there. He'd offer more than Cleverley i think.

I agree, I said at the time it was nerves. First game at Old Trafford under LVG's new reign, pressure of the crowd with last years finish still lingering. We seen they could play well in the new system during pre season. I think with Rafa and RVP back we will have a bit more quality. We will want to bounce back after everyone writing us off already.
