Hate to be negative after the last 15 minutes, but it worries me how much confidence affects our levels. We’re knocking it around like prime Barca now, when we looked down and out before the goal. There’s something lacking mentally.

Most teams if not all are affected by confidence. In the system, coach, their teammates and themselves. Winning breads winning. We need to go on a run on wins and build the confidence.

The halftime commentary is so crap. Talking like Southampton slaughtered us for 35 mins.

I didn't want to write anything, but I saw Southampton collapsing after dominating and missing such a big chance to score. they may score in the end, but this is probably ending 1-3 or 1-4 in that case.

Onana motm already even if there is a hattrick in this game imo.
    DeLight MOTM

Even at 2-0 up, we all know that Utd are capable of losing from here don't we? ETH needs to sort his team structure and tactics out because they could easily take chances they have missed first half.

Amad and Zirkzee been our best players so far

Zirkzee has the looks of a guy that could be an absolute monster if flanked by some goalscoring wing forwards. Plug him into the Firminho role at Pool or the Benzema role at Madrid during the CR7 years and he’d go nuts with his link up ability.

The problem here is, we need him to score and oddly that’s not his game.

Amad is comfortably our best attacker. In general our attackers have done well I felt. The problem is getting the ball to them where they can do damage. Our build up play is frankly atrocious. It requires Licha and Mainoo/Eriksen/Bruno to be fully press resistant and play perfect line breaking passes to a static player in the opposition half. There is no movement in midfield to create passing lines/1-2s. Once that pass is made, we somehow spring to life and create things. It's just not sustainable.

But we all know that already. For this game at least, it has clicked thanks to Onana and De Ligt. Hopefully we get another goal soon, put Ugarte out for a stroll and leave with all 3 points and a confidence boost.

Confidence eh? Once the players got some confidence back, we have really played well. Before that it looked like they were chasing shadows.

    Football bloody hell!

Rashford's goal had the same setup as Brighton's winner against us. Like how Adringra took a touch diagonally backwards before getting his cross past Mazaraoui to the back post, Rashford did the same with his touch away from Archer's press and that allowed him to bend it into the corner. Good ball shift.

Bruno had a chance to shoot and didnt move the ball enough then shot straight into the defender.

2 good goals and looked like turning it into a hammering after the penalty.

Slow start but the main thing is now that we don't lose momentum in the second half.

At least he put in a good ball but agreed he's not been his best. Dalot on the other hand has been abysmal to the point they are only attacking one area.

Yeah, he's been ropy. We've got ourselves to blame for not getting a left back who can play at left back. I cannot believe we went into the season relying on Shaw staying fit. It's madness.

I also don't think Dalot is well served by tucking into midfield as a left back, which means he's almost always out of position when we're broken on and he's got Rashford ahead of him to help out, which Rashford does very half-heartedly.

So on Erik and Dalot both I'd say.

To be fair, we are pretty fortunate to be 2 up. Southampton have been the better team for the most part until the penalty save. The coaching staff have obviously found a weakness in how they defend set pieces as we’ve done a good job at exploiting them after the penalty. Job not done yet, this United team have made it an art for to bottle a 2goal lead last year so hopefully we can see that professional performance that sees out a win which we really want form this side.
Shit post. Was resilient, smart, committed and some lovely movement. Southampton played well too for 25 mins

Think the problem have had has been the midfield combination of Eriksen and Mainoo. What's becoming clear is that Mainoo isn't good defensively. So a midfield of Mainoo and Eriksen in a two man midfield struggles to put pressure on the ball.
As some on here indicated early on. He is doing his share decently well but certainly not enough to be the "defensive" one in a midfield. The combination with Eriksen is ridiculous on paper. And I don't think, it is working too well. Soton missed a pen and we scored a from a set piece and a somewhat lucky shot. No need to be critical, sometimes you score like that, but we have to draw the right conclusions. I really don't see what the plan moving forward is supposed to be when we apparently play on longballs against fecking Southhampton...

De Ligt and Amad having very good games. Dalot has been below par, as has Kobbie. Not really seeing it with Mazraoui at all so far. Zirkzee has been a mixed bad but his interplay and technique is great.

Edit: Rashford with a great goal as well, nice to see, hopefully he can get going again now.

Bruno, Eriksen and Rashford offering so little. And yes I realise one has an assist and another scored. But we're carrying them both in and out of posession.

Loving Zirkzee though, and despite getting skinned once De Ligt, Mazaraoui and Martinez have looked decent.

    Amad's a baller too.

Well that was a weird half of football
I kept expecting the inevitable goal to be conceded and it never came. They were all over us for the first thirty minutes, and any shots we got we squandered like usual. And then suddenly we became clinical and took our chances. It's like Opposite World today and I'm loving it.

    We're shit.

But at least De Ligt looks like the real deal. Can't remember the last time a Centreback of ours scored from a set piece.

Can we enjoy good performances without having to try and have a go at others?

So according to you score counters, where are we at?

Onana haters - in the mud
Dalot haters - chilling in the pool
Martinez haters - teetering on the brink of the mud
De Ligt haters - drowning under a horrible mudslide
Mazraoui haters - teetering on the brink of the mud
Eriksen haters - jumping like maniacs between the mud then the pool?
Mainoo haters - teetering on the brink of the pool?
Bruno haters - one foot in the mud from time to time
Rashford haters - dragged from the pool and tossed unceremoniously into the mud
Zirkzee haters - in the mud
Amad haters - in the mud

Honestly, what's wrong with you people? Enjoy the game and the fact that our players are doing well

Rashford has been sh1t defensively and when we’re out of possession, but he’s been OK if not outstanding when we have the ball.
If he can’t or won’t do the defensive job, he’ll continue to be a potential liability, unless we can develop into a more physically dominant and controlling team, where his limitations can be mitigated by the whole.

Pundits are saying that Southampton has been the best team so far. But we have had 8 shots on goal, and they have had 4.

Same here. I’ve been pleasantly surprised. It’s the first time we’ve scored more than one goal in a game since the FA Cup final.

There is quite a bit of potential in this team with Zirkzee, Amad, Garnacho, Mainoo, Mazourai, Martinez... All are so good on the ball.

Confidence eh? Once the players got some confidence back, we have really played well. Before that it looked like they were chasing shadows.

    Football bloody hell!
I think Southampton are just that shite

It's a really strange game because we did construct some really pretty free flowing attacks through Zirkzee and Amad primarily despite being outplayed.

One aspect of this is bravery -- wait for the guy pressing you to commit to the press, let him get close, wiggle away and find a pass taking him out of the game. Very few people seem to be able to do this in our squad. They just play it back or play the safe pass very quickly. The couple of situations where this did happen (Dalot, Amad at the very least pull it off) it lead to some really nice attacking situations.

The flip side of it is guys like Mainoo overcooking it in these situations, getting caught on the ball by a physical Saints side and getting into trouble.

I really do think Ugarte changes the character of the game. Hope to see him in the 2nd half for Eriksen.

Poor pen .Had to save that one, it's been a pretty awful 30 mins or so, then a goal changes a game look comfy look like there's more goals in them. Mainoo another 10 mins off .. Eriksen off around 70 mins . Those would be my only changes if score stays the same.

Please please do not feck this up

Think the problem have had has been the midfield combination of Eriksen and Mainoo. What's becoming clear is that Mainoo isn't good defensively. So a midfield of Mainoo and Eriksen in a two man midfield struggles to put pressure on the ball.

On the ball, we're struggling to move the ball through the centre, as again, Mainoo isn't as strong positioning and acting on the ball in our defensive third. Add this to Eriksen not having the physical capabilities of making his presence felt, this then forces us to use our defenders to try and move the ball. In addition, playing deep at time due to the pressure we haven't applied in midfield, it means that our defenders are struggling to move the ball out of our half.

When we do get the ball up the pitch, we actually look good. Zirkzee and Amad are adding to our creativity, and Bruno can easily break any line.In the first few games, we relied heavily on turnovers from the press to create chances and have the ball in our half. This game is showing strengths and weaknesses. Ugarte might be a game changer both in and out of possession just on the basis of his physicality.
Not one of Mainoo’s best performances. They have been roughing him up and it’s worked.

Bruno one of the most frustrating players to watch (hot or cold). Mainoo needs to embrace physical battle more and put his stamp down more consistently (regardless of Ugarte there or not), otherwise he is just a highlight reels player. Dalot what the heck.. Shaw and Malacia can’t come back soon enough
