Maybe Ole thinks Southampton will struggle v a physical striker rather than Greenwood who excels at transitions which suited the Leeds game?

    I think it’s exactly that.

I also think the Matic decision is because they play 2 forwards so Matic dropping in gives us an extra man.

Feck me, we finally have a squad where we can rotate players and people are upset that we're rotating our players

    I actually hate our fanbase.

spot on. Of course everyone would love to watch 'the beautiful ones' all play all the time, but rotation, fitness and keeping it fresh is what winning the league is all about.

If you'd said Cavani is perhaps too old to start as regularly as we'd like I'd have seen a rotation point, but while Martial is a good footballer his output as a #9 isn't consistent enough and I doubt Ole values him more than a clinical striker.
Only way to find out is by following the season as it progresses. We will touch back on this by December.

It simply doesn’t make sense to sign two elite players and start neither of them. James dropped is excellent, but Sancho and Varane must have started regardless - simply because they were marquee signings and fans want to see them play.

It doesn’t send a good signal for future potential signings either

Yes, players will be worried that they don't start games the minute they sign for us. Especially moving to a new league. :wenger:

If martial doesn't have a better game than greenwood against Leeds then surely he can't be starting up front ahead of him. Need to see something from him today

Martial isn't our main striker. Hopefully he'll earn that position this season though by being actually worthy of the job.
I mean he was right up there as our player of the season in 19/20, then had a bad 20/21 with over half the season spent with various injuries. I'd say he's still viewed as what he was in 19/20 and not 20/21.

"Manchester United can equal the top flight's longest unbeaten away run if we avoid defeat at Southampton this Sunday. Arsenal's 27-match streak between 2003-04 is the current record."

Just because the caf has decided Martial & Matic don't have a part to play, doesn't mean Ole agrees.
Martial played well in the BCD match and Matic has had a full pre-season, so it's not too big of a surprise.

Sancho on the bench is a big surprise. Varane not so much since he’s only trained with the squad for a week.

No issue with Sancho not starting, but why you shove Greenwood out on the right after last week to play someone who's been injured for months and terrible for months before that, is completely beyond me. Why feck arooud with something that very clearly worked well to go back to something that hasn't been woring for over a year?

And its taken only 2 games for Ole to forget that Matic and Pogba in the same team is something that just doesn't work either. I mean the game in which this became completely fecking blatant was literally against Southampton. Matic will sit in the back four as sooon as he's pressed and Fred will have no one to pass to or play off.

There's not much point in improving the squad year on year if the manager can't even figure out how to use it and literally ignores everything that works in a fecking 5-1 win, to revert to things that didn't work the last 500 times he tried them.

Only hope is that SOouthampton are completely shite, otherwise we will have to change the line up to win, which Ole wont do until its borderline too late.

We don't need Sancho or Varane, they can play when there's an injury crisis.

    Bingo.
The team out there is just as strong if not stronger than the one that started last weekend. I am normally a negative dour cnut but this is ridiculous.

It's not a huge surprise, was always going to be one of him or Martial coming in for James and that's it. Next week I'd guess Sancho starts.

Every year people expect new signings to be thrown in with a few offering caution and saying they'll be eased in. Every year we get the same dramatic response when they aren't thrown in to start right away. It's like it's the first time some people have seen a new signing bed in.

Opinions like this is how divisions within our fanbase start.

Creating an imaginary bar that Player A must surpass, otherwise he's not good enough. It's so hyperbolic.
Doesn't matter about the variables like two completely different teams, play styles, playing home vs playing away etc.

How is Mason getting pushed anywhere for our main striker. Do you guys ever give these posts any thoughts at all?
It's the matchday thread! Obviously a rhetorical question.

And this is only for the team selection... wait for the " I can't believe Amad and Hannibal aren't starting!" etc comments

It is a bit strange Sancho doesn't start considering he's comfortably our best right winger and has been training for over a week. It stinks of a coach trying to be too clever by "bedding" players in when other top quality players at other clubs have gone straight into the first team. Oh well, plenty of games to come round and I won't complain too much if it means we'll win this one 5-1 again.

State of some of these posts.
Everyone wants James out the line up, Martial comes in, the much superior player, and everyone goes mad. One bad season doesn’t make him worthless and I can’t wait till he shows that.

    Good lineup.

Matić probably has the most preseason games under his belt, seems wise to use him now when he's the fittest he'll be.

Martial needs to get going if we're going to compete. Also, easiest thing to do is to replace him with Greenwood at CF and add Jadon to the right.

Varane probably won't play today unless we're comfortably ahead.

Not a good thing changing your centerbacks when losing.

    Good win awaits us.

But who's going to track back now?

For all the focus on our team, I've just had a look at the Southampton team and I genuinely don't recognise most of the back four. Doesn't look like a strong team at all; think we'll smash them.

Outstanding post XI-announcement/pre-match thread. A wax clown would go up in flames in seconds here.

I want to see Sancho and Varane too, but we have a long season ahead of us. The opponent today is Southampton, not Liverpool.
