A striker who we have back up for and a left back that isn't performing. I don't think our squad is weakened by these to be honest. If Ole had balls it'd actually be a decent game to try out some of the young lads. Be a nice change

Oh yeah true Ole doesn't have balls that's why Greenwood, McTominay, James all start and we have the youngest squad in the prem. But because he doesn't play Gomes he has no balls?

LB who is not performing? that is your opinion, Shaw has been a threat last few games going forward.

    How so? We were abysmal.

If we'd scored the penalty we'd have won. Simple. Certain decisions made life a bit harder too. We were shite, but still good enough to win that game. Dont forget, playing shit and winning is the mark of champions so its raid.

    Very fair point.

I'm optimistic that under this style with Ole we can make the top four, if we're lucky. The biggest concern to me is the injuries to Martial and Shaw. It's only a few games into the season and their bodies are breaking down. It's a long season ahead with EL and I don't know if we will be able to come out of it with the thin squad we have.

Mctominay is fully deserving of his place. James has started yes, on his least favoured side because we dont have a decent right winger. So he's shoehorned in rather than playing in his best position on merit. If he starts on the left this weekend, then we'll see a whole new side of him. Greenwood hadn't started a game this year, as been subbed on late a couple of times though where he doesn't get enough time to make an impact. 89th minute against wolves. Plus I didn't mention Gomes. But yeah I'd give him a game. He's not worse than what were playing with but he adds hunger to the team.

Shaw though in my opinion hasn't been as good as I think he can be. Whether that the tactics he's playing under or something else. He's been an outlet for teams to exploit down that side.

We've had these injury issues for years now, under different managers. Completely baffles me. Obviously we have some injury prone players that contributes but I've always thought there must be something else wrong within the club setup. We get far more injuries than most of the top 6-8 clubs it seems.

I've got my opinions on some of them have seen quite a few players join us and then bulk up. Shaw and Jones for instance, are much too heavy for modern footballers. I'll point out Kurt Zouma as an example - look at how trim he is following his big injury. It looks like their medical and nutritonist staff is helping him get a fitness that's much more appropriate for the sport. Weight does not equate strength.

I love that Smalling has gone vegan. Not sure if his injury record is better but he was looking trim and like he had an extra boost of vitality last season. I'd love for our team to consider something like it.

After Giggs improved his injuries by doing yoga (he even had his own studio) did they ever incorporate anything like that at United?

I think a lot of people in this thread are seriously overrating Southampton. I am not so concerned by the Palace result as it was a perfect storm of terrible refereeing, awful luck and sadly a DDG howler to finish things off. The United hating media gleefully piled on in the aftermath but taking a neutral view we deserved the 3 points and it was just one of those crappy days when nothing goes for you, same thing happened to City against Palace last year.

That said, if we lose to Southampton then we really do have a problem. They are seriously devoid of quality and prime candidates to go down having barely survived 2 years in a row. We should be well fired up after throwing away the 2 points at Wolves and then the Palace shitshow and I expect a serious reaction. I have been in Ole's corner so far but if he cannot get the team up for this one then I would seriously question his ability to get through to the players.

    DDG

    AWB Lindelof Maguire Young

    Fred Mctom

    Pogba

    James Martial Rashford
Be disappointed if Lingard starts again but not overly surprised given the lack of options available to Ole.

Seeing as dalot and shaw are injured I would go with

    ---------de gea
    --awb---Maguire--smalling
    ------mctominay--pogba
    -james------gomes------young
    ---------rashford----martial

Also if martial is injured then I would swap him with Greenwood and replace gomes with mata as I dont think it's clever to have too much of an inexperienced side playing away during a period where we ain't great.

It might be an idea to sure up that back line. Get the wing backs further forward to help the midfielders and get some creativity helping out our striker. The current formation doesn't exactly help us out with the players at our disposal.

    De Gea

    Smalling Maguire Rojo

    AWB Mctominay Fred Young

    Gomes Pogba

    Rashford

Not sure why so many have Gomes in their line-up, wishful thinking I guess. It’s quite obvious he is nowhere close to starting anytime soon.

Hahaha at those not naming Lingard in the 11.

Some people really exist on blind faith alone. JLingz is one of Ole's buddies, he'll start every single league game for the foreseeable future.

What's with the blind faith in Fred. 2 managers have found nothing there to pin their hopes on, and one of them signed him!

On the back of this, do we have any stats or something that shows exactly how he's played. Heat maps and shit.

Fred is the type of player where the system he's deployed in will make him play better. Same as pogba. Played correctly, he could be a very good player for us. Now since were shit as buying players and selling the shit ones. We should find a system that suits what we have available. Otherwise it'll be a waste of another season.

    Good shout

I would like us to back to 433 or 4312 formation again in this game.

    McTominay-Fred-Pogba
    Greenwood-Martial-Rashford

    Or

    AWB-Lindelof-Maguire-Young
    McTominay-Fred-Pogba
    ----------- Gomes -----------
    ---- Martial ------- Rashford--

Southampton usually press high and then fall back into a 5-4-1 once that press is by-passed. Their attacking transitions are quick, especially on the left wing with Redmond. AWB will have a busy game.

We will need Pogba at his best, not only to receive the ball from defense under high press but also to turn possession into attacking situations. Saints do have weaknesses in their backline (Vestergaard on left has looked suspect), but they will need to be unlocked. Blazing through won't work imo, which is why I expect Pereira to start, hopefully in the right half-space.

    DdG
    AWB Lindelof Maguire Young
    McT Pogba
    Pereira James
    Rashford
    Greenwood

If Lingard does start in the ten position, he will only add to the chaos of Saints frantic defending with additional bodies in the middle.

Don't want to see Pogba sitting in a midfield 2 anymore - he's wasted there.

Yes, our options of a midfield partner for McT is poor, but so are our options further forward.

Given current form, I'd rather see McTominay, Matic and Pogba than McTominay, Pogba and Lingard. Hell, throw in Garner to really bring the average squad age down.

    Team should be...

    ------------De Gea------------
    AWB--Lindelof--Maguire--Young
    ---McTominay----Pogba---
    Andreas-----Mata-----James
    -----------Rashford-----------

Subs: Romero, Tuanzebe, Darmian, Matic, Lingard, Gomes, Greenwood

This is assuming that Shaw and Martial are out. Lingard definitely needs to be dropped and as much as I'd like to see it I cant see either Gomes or Greenwood starting

Hopefully we defend properly in this game which should give us a chance if we can nick a goal or two at the other end.

Martial is out and Ole said there was no need to buy a Lukaku replacement because we have Geenwood, time to put your money where your mouth is. I'd obviously like to see Gomes or even Pereira in the #10 but it'll be Lingard, and I hope the fact McTominay has been poor in the first 3 games doesn't see him dropped for Rigor Mortic, at least wait until Fred is fully fit before trying a different partner with Pogba.

Draw would be good here but unfortunately I think we will lose. Southampton are a solid team, especially at home.

Well that’s a depressing thought against Southampton, not saying wrong just very depressing.

This match can shape our season. If we don't bounce back and prove C Palace result was a fluke, then we're in for a loooooong season.

I have a feeling things will go from bad to worse and we’re going to lose 2-1. I hope to God not but this team has zero backbone as we’ve seen over and over again.

    It’s painfully obvious that we will line up;

    Rashford
    James-Lingard-Mata

Fred comes in on the bench, no Gomes.

And you can quote me on that!

Not so much lack of backbone, but lack of confidence stemming from their abundant lack of talent.

Whenever we go one down, away from home, I go cut the lawn instead of watching.

I think I'll be cutting the lawn on Saturday.

Why is there no Brandon Williams in Lineup Prediction? It is not improbable that he makes the squad this time, yet it's impossible to select him...
