4 wins from 4 in the Premier League is certainly good for the teams confidence and the team are in a good place going into big week when we play two direct rivals for the Champions League places. Southampton certainly weren’t expected to be a challenge to the top four, but under Koeman they have proven they have the quality to be in the mix although I am expecting them to drop off the pace at little over Christmas as their run of games gets harder and come faster. They will certainly test the teams new found confidence of and form which why Van Gaal is keen to asses where we are at after the game.
"I want to wait until after the match [to assess things], but we’re in a very good moment. We've won four matches in a row, which is a very good achievement in the Premier League. I want to see what happens against Southampton – if we win a second consecutive awaygame, we'll have great momentum" he said. The pressure on United is not huge in terms of points needed, I think we only need 27 from the nest 42 to be on course for the top four which gives us a 15 points cushion, but the next two games will certainly help the momentum grow further and prove to the players and outsiders that the changes we are seeing are for real and not just because we played against teams that are struggling themselves.Southampton have a bad record against Champions League challengers - they've only lost to Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal this season - while United have won only one game on the road. This is a big test for both. United are in a good place for this game, with not too much pressure/expectation on us, hopefully this week will prove we are a dangerous opponent again.
Southampton have injuries, particularly in central midfield, where they are missing Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork, James Ward-Prowse and Toby Alderweireld who has been used in central midfield when needed. Southampton’s squad is not that big so these injuries will surely force Koeman to change to a system featuring two central midfielders Steven Davis and Victor Wanyama rather than play 4-3-3 which their default system. This would mean Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long will support striker Pelle. It’s a system Koeman has used before, but in truth, the system didn't work when Koeman tried it at Aston Villa a fortnight ago, there might be little other option here. What will be interesting to see is how it affects their pressing, Southampton don’t press so energetically in the opposition half like last season, but remain proactive without possession, but with one less midfield player they may look to play more of an counter-attack game and drop deeper using the pace of the trio behind Pelle to break into space in-behind. United’s system has continued to change throughout the season, but with all of his striker available Van Gaal seems to have reverted to a 4-4-2 diamond. This system should allow United to command the centre of the pitch against a Southampton team probably using only two central midfielders, but the drawback is that Southampton dangerous attacking full-backs will have space to attack because they have no direct opponent to guard against. If Southampton play their usual proactive game then Van Gaal will want a pacey forward to exploit Southampton's high line, which means another start for young James Wilson isn't out of the question. Further forward Tadic precise role could be important, United's makeshift full-backs will be in for a difficult test, if Tadic is playing from the flank, he is a tricky dribbler that has caused teams many problems, it might work out better if Tadic is fielded centrally, where he can be marshalled by Carrick and the centre-backs. Pelle acts as a good target man who drops off and links play and I think the combination of Rojo and Smalling will be comfortable with him so the supporting players will be the danger men.
What to look for
· Southampton’s system, will injuries force Koeman to revert to a two central midfielders system?
· Southampton’s pressing. Will they continue to be proactive or play more of a counter-attacking game?
· United’s system should see them dominate the centre of the pitch so will the Southampton full-backs be left too much space?
· Who will partner Van Persie?
· What role will Tadic play?
Subs – Lindegaard, Evans, Rafael, Fletcher, Januzaj, Wilson, Falcao.
The combination of Rojo and Smalling has worked well in recent games so there is no need to change that despite Jonny Evans being fit again, after constant chopping and changing we need some cohesion and consistency in this area. The full-back positions may get looked at, with options available, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young the unlikely full-back duo put in a good showing against Hull and Stoke. With Jonny Evans, Rafael, Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair all available, however, and the possibility to Marcos Rojo playing at left-back, it makes sense for Van Gaal to strengthen the backline with a natural defender in place of Young or Valencia, but I would stay true to form and let them keep their places.
In midfield Carrick, Herrera and Mata deserve their places on recent form, the concern is always Fellani. Is lack of mobility in terms of covering Bertrand’s runs forward could be a problem as well as being the type of player likely to be flustered by Southampton's pressing, and lash out in retaliation, but he's also a possible goalscorer. He's specialised at shuttling forward down the right to meet deep left-wing crosses - the method that resulted in the opener against Arsenal (an own goal) and Stoke (through Fellaini himself) and if up against Yoshida, he'll fancy his chances. I think Southampton will play a more reactive game so he keeps his place.
As mentioned it would not be a surprise to see James Wilson start again, but Rooney is always going to play under Van Gaal rightly or wrongly and with Falcao not quite ready to fully challenge Van Persie and Southampton likely to play slightly deeper Wilson drops to the bench.
