agreed. we have the best keeper in the world which is part of the defence. add rafa and shaw to smalling and rojo with carrick protecting and we are way better than many will have you believe. I have already mentioned the numbers, only City, Chelsea and Southampton (untill tonight) have a better record and that includes the rediculousley freakish 5 we conceded at Leicester

This is true but the issue is more that our defenders are injury prone. Evans, Jones, Rafael and Smalling are constantly injured. Whereas Shaw seems to be picking injuries aswell now even though he rarely missed a game for Saints last season.

This will be a tough game. Koeman knows van Gaal's style through and through and will undoubtedly try to exploit the space behind our fullbacks to cross towards Pele who is expected to either score or hold on to the ball for the rushing midfielders. That being said, there will be plenty of chances for us as well since there is space behind Clyne for us to exploit and I believe without Schneiderlin and Cork that our midfield is far stronger than theirs. This is a very important game but the lads will be thinking about Liverpool on Sunday. 2-3 to Man Utd

    I went for

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Young
    Carrick
    Januzaj Rooney Herrera Mata
    Van Persie

We would do if it wasn't for DDG!

Exactly. Anyone who thinks the United defence is solid right now is a tad delusional. The problem is partly down to injuries, but I've had zero confidence in the defence all season and almost every opposition attack makes me very nervous. We are a long way off the Vidic/Ferdinand or Pallister/Bruce days of stability at the back. The more I think about it the more I think a point tonight would be a decent result.
Having said that we are more than capable of doing damage so I'm hoping for a win.

I love Monday games, but I fecking hate away matches  I always have a bad feeling when we are playing away.

Same. Whenever we play away I spend the whole day nervous as feck!

    ------------------De Gea

    --Valencia--Smalling----Rojo--Young

    ------------------Carrick
    -------Fellaini---------------Herrera
    -------Mata-----------------Rooney
    ------------------V.Persie

Lindegaard, Januzaj, Rafael, Fletcher, Falcao, Wilson.

My thoughts as well. It's the fact that Koeman really knows LVG very well, knows his tactics...knows what he says etc as a manager. Still...different players...different scenarios I suppose...

I've got a really good feeling about tonight for some unknown reason.

Probably wrong though, and we'll end up getting humped!!

Hoping a powerful away performance from us today. If we win this one convincingly and go 3rd the rest of the table will be looking at us with a little bit of fear again i think.

Shame we couldn't go into this game still in the top 4. I think there could be a pressure to climb back in. It will be a tough game, but I think we should get a win. Southampton looked a bit useless going forward against Arsenal, although they will probably approach the game differently at home. Their last 3 games could indicate that they are running out of steam.

A win would be a great result, and to go into the Liverpool fixture with form of 5 wins on the bounce would be excellent.

I hope we don't make the usual Darren Fletcher substitute late on.
Why not? It could mean that we are already quite comfortable and put Fletcher on to give him some minutes. :D

Well, my prediction is 2-0 win so I am the optimist but truly believe we can win this (and agree all of what you said there). What more incentive than going into the game and climbing two spots, before playing Liverpool. The players will also be motivated to play this for the manager who has something to prove since the other dutch coach was regarded by him as "weak" before. :)

Definitely, in the end we still have the better players.

Really hate the Fletcher sub, it rather means that we are ahead but are under pressure so we want to bring a little bit of calmness, rather have a Pereira/Januzaj sub, which rather mean we're quite comfortably ahead and can give the youngsters a chance.

That was back in 1996 at the Dell, the week before that we lost 5-0 at Newcastle which I remember even more - however, we still won the PL that season:smirk:

Yeah..I remember it well. Amazing to recall that Fergie wasn't that perturbed afterwards. Said something like it has been a really bad week...but there will be a reaction "no doubt about that...." - yeah.....he was right.

    but we do have him.
thats like saying Madrid wouldnt score as many if they didnt have Ronaldo
Not really. De Gea is the goalkeeper and not part of the defence whereas Ronaldo is the focal point of everything Madrid do - their whole gameplan revolves around him. While De Gea a wonderful keeper who is getting better with every game, his ability to make outstanding saves should not be used to excuse opposition teams exposing the defence with too much ease (as has happened too frequently this season).

I always think the opposite (partly because I like Fletcher). Gone are the day when we have players like Ole to bring on to make a difference for the better, or a Giggsy to score a goal. Whatever the manager does though, I hope he's doing it for a purpose and not just going through a process for whatever reasons. I really don't think people should be bashing Fletcher. He's there for a good reason. And don't get me started with Januzaj. He's wearing the number 11 shirt and yet to make an impact. You can't say he's not given a chance sometimes.

I'm not bashing on Fletch in anyway, LVG brings Fletch on, to actually close the game. This season, the last season we get pressured and we need some calmness, some experience in the side to not give away the lead, but I wouldnt prefer those situations as vs Stoke, West Ham, Everton over situations like vs QPR, Hull where we are ahead by a good margin, and sub players in who bring more creativity, offer more attacking options to even broad out the score.

Really twitchy about this one. A genuine banana skin of a fixture. Soton (Koeman etall) desperate to prove to everyone that their dizzy heights arent a fluke, and how sweet it would be for them to bloody the nose of our recovery

For us: it'd be a fantastic boost to climb to 3rd. Will that inspire us, or add to the nerves

This could be a 4 pinter (2 is my match-watching norm)

There are more to consider in the mind of LvG than just what you said. Manager has more at stake than we fans when a decision is made. He's the one who's watching players practise day in day out and know what they can do and what purpose in the sub (if you really do trust LvG. Last season we were at a loss many a time how some subs were made by Moyes and it gave us the feeling its just a bit random or out of sheer panic. LvG is a calmer and sensible soul.

We always seem to play badly in these Monday night games but I'm really hoping that tonight we can break that trend. I'm going for 2-1 to us in a tightly contested game from start to finish.

I know some on here are nervy but can we have some positives rather than negatives being said more?

We have been winning 4 on a trot and they have been without a win in their last three. If we do not take advantage of that, we don't deserve to be top 4 anyway. But we all know that we are top 2 qualities so whats the fear?

    2-0 win with RvP scoring.

Gotta be winning this. Unless we're very unlucky or a depleted Soton play out of their skin it'd be disappointing if we don't get the 3 points.

Would you be happy with a typical average monday night performance and a 1-1 draw where Soton was the better team?

You seem to miss the point a bit, it's just about I dont want us to have a small lead, under pressure with shaking knees, I'd rather have that we are leading quite comfortably and not have the need to get it more tight defensively/holding. Fletcher lately has always come on, when we were shaking. Literally in all matches bar Hull when he came on, we were shaky and had a minimal lead.

We ought to win this. I worry though that it's times like this which show up a real lack in depth in certain parts of the team.

I remember when we had Wes Brown and Silvestre to play when Rio and Vidic were out - at least you knew those guys had the character and quality to get the job done. We don't have that kind of class or experience in reserve these days.

The pessimist in me says we are due a loss and they are due a win.

we really need to win tonight to cement our place in the top 4 going into the chrimbo fixtures

Hope you don't watch the game and don't come on line here. It's better you turn in early and wake up to a surprised win in the morning. You will feel better this way it think

Got a decent amount of money on United to win 3-1, lets hope it rolls in.

dear me....my mistake, I think that 6 - 3 loss many years back has been etched in my mind.......
The grey kit fiasco. Crikey, I remember that.
