Rashford starts Saturday then and it's between young and memphis for the other side. Whoever stakes the best claim tonight.

Good to see TFM playing but I'd have loved him to be beside Carrick in that midfield instead of Schniderlin who I was a massive fan of but just don't think he's got broad enough shoulders to carry the burden of being a united player.

Gut call but I think playing Rooney today makes him a lock for Leicester on Saturday. Why else play him. This is a chance for him to bang in some goals against a weaker side, gain some confidence ...

If he scores today, he will 100% start against LCFC.
In fact, as long as he doesn't play really really bad, he'll still be the first name on the team sheet against LCFC.

Remember, he was our worst player in our last game. Nothing changes.

    NORTHAMPTON'S STARTING XI
Northampton have named their team via their Twitter account it features United's former Academy player Kenji Gorre.

Didn't realise they had big Zander Diamond at the back. Aberdeen legend. A face only a mother could love.

    What start do you mean?
He is playing today, just as he has every game this season (except Feyenoord).

Yes and he'll be "rested" at the weekend imo. The start of him being phased out of the starting 11 gradually.

Strange lineup. I am not sure whether there is something to gain from it going forward or whether it just a selection based on giving players gametime and improving confidence.

5 points from match prediction game. I do not believe I have ever gotten that low before haha

Good to see Fosu-Mensah starting. Interesting that Rooney is starting when neither Rashford nor Ibrahimovic is. Any indication that Rooney might be dropped against Leicester? Not happy about one of our players leaking a story about discontent to the press but hopefully we'll see a good performance today and can forget these last 3 games.

    A strange interpretation mate.
This is clearly Jose being very cute indeed.

Pitching it to Rooney as needing his "leadership" after our bad run of form, when really giving him more rope to hang himself. As if you cannot do it against league 1, you really shouldn't be near our club,

And however it goes tonight, he will need to "rest" him for Saturday, a game which being a 12.45 is very close.

I agree it looks like this is Jose's subtle way of getting Rooney out of the side but I will only believe it when I see it. I have thought many times before there's no way Rooney can start and there his name is on the next team sheet and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the same thing happens on Saturday. I will be celebrating and have complete faith in Jose if what you suspect is true and Rooney is dropped for Leicester.

Rooney playing is good. Means he's not first choice while the others are rested. Midfield looks really negative though. Was hoping Mata would start in front of Schneiderlin, maybe he'll play on the weekend though? Should win easily of course, but it's clearly just a rotated 11.
    Yeah sure.

Gut call but I think playing Rooney today makes him a lock for Leicester on Saturday. Why else play him. This is a chance for him to bang in some goals against a weaker side, gain some confidence and have the media fawn all over him for scoring in what will likely be another poor showing from him

I said something very similar earlier in the thread and was called crazy. I really hope it isn't the case but I can easily see this working in Wayne's favour. These things usually do.

It's the way he's suddenly put him up front, rather than that vague off the front man position as well.
Rooney himself knows he can't do a good job there anymore, so it feels like one last trial, and if he can't boss a league 1 backline than it really is hard to argue he should start in the premier league.

Shame Rashford doesn't get his rightful start in his preferred position, but he'll have many an opportunity in the future.

Had to come on here to see the meltdown at Rooney starting. Have to say I'm surprised at that myself, especially in the number 9 role. I hope it's a sign that he won't play at the weekend. Who knows though? Just get a fecking win tonight ffs.

Rooney is literally the only player in that front 6 that's part of our first 11. Call me crazy but that's as good as confirmation that he's been dropped.

I had a sneaky suspicion we would see Rooney tonight, makes it easier to drop him against Leicester.

Memphis needs to impress tonight, it's a big game for him and a few others to stake a claim in the team whilst the normal first XI are failing to get results.

Starting 11 looks a bit of a car crash tbf

thought the exact opposite to be honest mate.

Very solid centre backs and midfield, and getting minutes under the belt for all the wide players.

Looks spot on to me. Bar playing Rashford up front for a rare time

That's weird. Did TV2 used to have it? Here in Sweden we have Viasat who has PL, League Cup, FA Cup, Championship as well as CL.
Yeah Tv2 had it until this season but haven't bought the new rights. They're in a mess so might be why they didn't.

Gives him a second chance though. If he has a decent game then he plays himself into the team

yep, he has to realise he has a real chance to smash into the lineup, as no winger has done anything this season. Could be a last chance, as if Martial/Miki get going, he could be wrestling for occasional starts against Mata/Rashford/Young and Lingard!

He will be too eager as usual I'm afraid. He need to be calm and focus on the basics first

What if he scores 2-3 goals today? Then what?
