    So Rooney gets to start against the minnows so he can nick a goal for his media buddies to claim he's still got it when Zlatan is out of the team or some similar nonsense.

    Can't wait until this man is out of the club, actually starting to despise him now. If starting today means he's not playing against Leicester then fair enough but I can't see it.

    I think it's pretty clear that starting today does mean that he's not starting on the weekend. The others are being rested. If it wasn't the case, then he would be rested as he always needs one with Rashford starting probably.

    Why would Mourinho pick Rooney to cater to Rooney's buddies in the media?
     
    Cant wait for rooney to scrape a goal of his standing leg against 2nd division part time footballers and then his friends and supporters will say he is back
     
    Rooney, Memphis and Schneiderlin are all awful players who will never be good enough for this club. Can see them having a decent game tonight against lower league opposition though, meaning they will stay close to the first team for another few months when they should be in the reserves.

    No matter where you play Rooney, he sucks.
    After 2 years of sub par performances, in whichever position/formation, have you not understood this yet?
    Some pundit on MOTD even suggested that he play as a No.4 (ie. defensive midfielder)!

    If he plays as GK and sucks, there will be people saying, "he needs to play as No.10".

    Out of curiosity, when Rooney is eventually dropped and we're still shit, who gets the blame?

    I'm no fan and agree he's now far from his best, but feck me, the bloke is going to be our top goalscorer of all time, some of you make out he's never done anything for us.
     
    It all depends on what happens at Saturday - if Rooney still starts then, nothing has changed and the doom train can keep going.

    A strange interpretation mate.
    This is clearly Jose being very cute indeed.

    Pitching it to Rooney as needing his "leadership" after our bad run of form, when really giving him more rope to hang himself. As if you cannot do it against league 1, you really shouldn't be near our club,

    And however it goes tonight, he will need to "rest" him for Saturday, a game which being a 12.45 is very close.

    Rooney dropped? I will believe it when I see it. That guy can easily play 2 games per week.
    He'll suck, for sure. But he can play.

    The team playing today has no influence on the team which plays on Saturday. All our players can play 2 games per week, with the exception of Carrick (due to age).

    I think its a start towards him being "rotated" and eventually marginalised. I doubt Mourinho wants to go for the big move at one go which is understandable.
     
    Gut call but I think playing Rooney today makes him a lock for Leicester on Saturday. Why else play him. This is a chance for him to bang in some goals against a weaker side, gain some confidence and have the media fawn all over him for scoring in what will likely be another poor showing from him
     
    Shame for Rashford. Would have been a rare start in his actual main position

    If we had to leave him out for the euro game to make sure he was ready for Watford (! yea I know!), then a Wed 7.45 to a Sat 12.45 definitely is too little time.

    It's a clever way to ease him our of the premier league team. We can then continue it by featuring him in the next euro, before a "resting" for Stoke.
