Rooney only has to do very little to redeem himself in the eyes of most of the media and pundits and a couple of goals here will likely see him backed to the hilt by everyone again and him in the team for another month of crap performances.

Rooney is a confident player, no matter how badly he plays.
He himself says that he has nothing to prove. He is captain of club/country, under numerous managers. This gives a player confidence.
Even when he puts in "worst player on the pitch" performances, he still won't get subbed off. That is what gives him the confidence.
