It's the way he's suddenly put him up front, rather than that vague off the front man position as well.
Rooney himself knows he can't do a good job there anymore, so it feels like one last trial, and if he can't boss a league 1 backline than it really is hard to argue he should start in the premier league.
Shame Rashford doesn't get his rightful start in his preferred position, but he'll have many an opportunity in the future.
and if Rooney does nick a goal or two? That's what i'm worried about and that's half the point I was making. Rooney only has to do very little to redeem himself in the eyes of most of the media and pundits and a couple of goals here will likely see him backed to the hilt by everyone again and him in the team for another month of crap performances.
Anyway we will see.
