Spurs have won at Old Trafford in two of their last three visits, and finished just a place behind us last season, Its nice to be optmistic but they wont easy at all. Its not like we are facing some midtable no hopers in the first game like Swansea for example.

Yeah I admit I was conflicted on that one, but I don't think DDG's head will be right. Unless he comes out and states his commitment to United for the 15/16 season, at least, I'm not sure he should be first choice.

He didn't seem right during pre-season and, if his mind is elsewhere, we have other keepers who must be dreaming of playing for us. Kinda liked the fact that LVG threw some youngsters in at the deep end last season - I think it made some of them stronger in the long term and it would be a huge boost to Johnstone to get the nod for our first game.

Well my friend, It seems you called it  It just depends if Johnstone does actually get the nod or Romero. I wouldnt mind Johnstone in goal considering he did play in pre-season but it is a HUGE game to play in on his debut. So it could be make or break for him, same will go for Romero.

No excuses for a slow start now. No injuries and fewer pre season games played so everyone should be fresh. 2-0 Rooney and Memphis.

Just now struck me that we have a game tomorrow. I mean, I know there's a game of course, but big sense of excitement overwhelmed me now.

    Pumped.

Don't care who starts, just wiiiiin.

    _______S.Romero________
    Darmian Smalling Blind Shaw
    ____Carrick Schneiderin____
    _________Depay_________
    Mata ___Rooney____Young_

    thats what I went for

Wilson,Pereira, Herrera to come on as subs

I managed to name Fellaini as a substitute for the game in the prediction league...

FML. I should go home now and eat something.

Will feel a lot better tomorrow when the game starts if it's Smalling/Jones as our CB. Fear Kane will bully Blind much like when in the past we've been forced to play Carrick and he gets targeted by the oppositions bigger players.

I don't think Kane will bully much this season. For no other reason than seeing him play for England. I think he played above his possibilities last season.

    Ideally:

Johnstone, Darmian, Smalling, Jones, Shaw, Carrick, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Mata, Rooney, Depay

    Expecting:

Romero, Valencia, Jones, Blind, Shaw, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Mata, Depay, Young, Rooney

Expecting this team to start now:

    Johnstone
    Darmian Smalling Blind Shaw
    Carrick Schneiderlin
    Mata Memphis Young
    Rooney

    Hoping to see:

    Johnstone
    Darmian Smalling Jones Shaw
    Carrick
    Herrera Schneiderlin
    Mata Rooney Memphis

Herrera is likely guaranteed to get on off the bench, probably Schweinsteiger too. Januzaj or Wilson will likely get the other sub slot, unless someone in the back four has an absolute mare or gets injured (chances are reasonably high).

Expecting this team to start now:

    Johnstone
    Darmian Smalling Blind Shaw
    Carrick Schneiderlin
    Mata Memphis Young
    Rooney

That's what I've gone for. This is the team that I see us playing tomorrow. I think it will be good enough to beat Spurs.

    ---------Johnstone
    Valencia Smalling Blind Shaw
    ----Carrick Schneiderlin
    Mata----Memphis----Young
    ----------Rooney

i don't expect wilson, hernandez and januzaj to all be included on the bench. my money is hernandez being left out... what thinks you?

Hernandez? not a chance. Wilson will be on the bench. Januzaj will not.

    Expecting a 2-0/1 win. Let's go!

I laughed when some here posted Johnstone in their lineup, but now I can really see him starting tomorrow :D

Romero is probably not ready yet, yeah he played Copa, but Rojo did too and it looks like he is still a step away. Will be interesting, would prefer Johnstone too, give at least our lad a chance, won't be pissed if he makes a mistake, I expect it with Romero anyway, maybe Sam can suprise us.

Looking forward to the new season, but I dunno how confident I am in this match.

De Gea clearly a big loss, but aside from that, will the added break be help or hindrance? I guess that is something we will find out tomorrow.

As for the team, a few worries, Blind being CB isn't something that fills me with confidence, but having the options to choose from Bastian and Morgan is a massive plus.

Formations and tactics, if we continue with how we did in pre season, am I confident? Not really.

With all things taken into account, 2-1 United or 2-2

Think it will be Johnstone who starts.

I reckon it will be too its a shame DDG isn't as mentally astute as we all thought but I think we can handle them with Johnstone in goals.

Such a mistake if he doesn't go with Herrera at the start of this season.

As pumped as I am for the footy to be back I think Spurs might cause us lots of problems.

This exaggerated pessimism on here lately is pissing me off.

    Exaggerated pessimism.

Our best player by a landslide is all but physically gone and we've yet to bring in a replacement despite knowing about it for the better half of a year. We were worried that the likes of Loris or Cech could bring us down a level or two. Now our options are either Sam Johnstone or Sergio Romero. Neither of them would be a starting option for any upper mid table club.

Our improvements are still untested. Basti is a gamble, he's undoubtedly one of the best midfielders to ever grace the game in his prime, but he's 31 and there's more than one reason to have doubts. Morgan is a good option to have, but he's not going to be the next Paul Scholes. Our only shining beacon of possible midfield greatness looks to be a bench option, the CB partnership we were looking to forge in Jones and Smalling has been replaced by a player that, albeit good, has a maximum of 10 matches at centre back.

There are positives. Basti is a worldbeater on his day, Memphis looks to have loads of potential in him, Mata is always class, Herrera can be right up there with the best in the coming years. But they all have downsides. Basti is aging, Memphis is an uncertainty, Herrera is getting benched again and Mata is not playing in his comfort role.

And the biggest point of all is that, I will say again, we have still not found a replacement for the player who pretty much singlehandedly got us into the top 4.

"Exaggerated pessimism" my arse. I wish there wasn't negativity too, but it's neither exaggerated nor pessimism. It's worry, worry which has a lot of basis to it.

    Went for:

    Johnstone

    Darmian
    Smalling
    Jones
    Shaw

    Carrick
    Schneiderlin
    Mata

    Young
    Rooney
    Depay

    I hope he plays a midfield 3 of Herrera--Carrick--Schneiderlin

It seems too obvious though so of course he wont

So buzzed for this now. Tomorrow's the last day of my week off work, tempted to have a massive lie-in just so I won't have that much waiting to do when I get up.

So looking forward to this. The beer is getting cold, friends are on their way and the TV is brand new. Bring it on.

All you've demonstrated here are that there are, as is always true, positives and negatives going into the season, and if you grossly exaggerate one side and basically neglect the other then you can make it seem as if the situation is much worse/better than it is.

-De Gea was amazing last season, but he did not 'singlehandedly get us into the top 4.'
-Schneiderlin is not 'the next Paul Scholes', you're right. What he is is the player that the majority of people on here had down as their top choice signing for that position. He was maybe the second best in the league in that position last season (only behind Matic), and still has plenty of room to grow. In short, you can't possibly put him down as some sort of passive-aggressive negative. He's a massive positive.
-Because of Schneiderlin, it doesn't even matter if Schweinsteiger's 'ageing' or not. We didn't buy him to play every game or always be fit. We bought him so we'd have a fecking legendary player sitting on the bench ready to come in and inject the quality and experience of someone who has very recently had his mitts on both the CL and WC trophies.
-'Memphis is an uncertainty'. What does that mean, exactly? All signings are uncertainties. At least our uncertainty was arguably the hottest young attacking talent in Europe last season.
-You've actually forgotten Darmian completely. Superb signing for one of last season's problem positions.
-Whoever you mean by 'our only shining beacon of possible midfield greatness', you're neglecting someone. We've got two world-class older players in Carrick and Schweinsteiger, and two of the league's standout central midfielders heading into their prime in Schneiderlin and Herrera.

Perhaps we should acknowledge that what you're actually doing is worrying about what we're going to do for a first-choice keeper when and if De Gea leaves, but you've translated that into general hysteria about a squad and a summer's work that are both actually looking pretty good.

    Excellent post @Brightonian

Don't forget folks, Spurs are playing their 4th game in 8 days tomorrow. Add in the ridiculous travel schedule they've had which finished up with a delayed flight and only arriving back in England yesterday, I gotta say I'm very optimistic.

I think our new guys will want to impress and I can see a 2-1 win for United, if not 3-1.

Our two matches against Spurs last season were fairly one sided, the OT match we smashed them and cruised it in the second half, the match at WHL started out very one sided and if wasn't for an incredible performance from Lloris we would of been 3-0 up by half time.

Can't believe the meltdown that's going on here, we've still got a very good side.

Holy moly football is back. Feels way to soon! The de Gea shite has really taken a gloss off of things. Couldn't really care less about di Maria he was awful for us bar a wondergoal and a couple of flukes.

Feeling apprehensively confident, if that emotion exists. Come on lads !
