We've played in van Gaal's 433 in preseason, when did he say he was reverting back to one holding mid? He calls last years formation 433 with the point backward and this year we're playing 433 with the point forward. Van Gaal doesn't care what others call it.

    http://www.manutd.com/en/Tour-2015/...ms-preferred-manchester-united-formation.aspx

When asked which formation he will deploy in the Barclays Premier League, van Gaal replied: "More or less 4-3-3. We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use.

here he clearly states that the system he used last season is the one he wants to use, which means 1 holding midfielder, yes?

He's given an interview last season where he states he liked both variations of 433 and can use both (which he's done in his carreer). He calls them both 433 and doesn't specify which one he will use in that link. As he's played with the point forward during preseason we can assume it's that one, as he also said 'more or less 433'.

yes I totally agree with what your saying in regards to formations 433, 4231 ect.. same formations basically, but he has said he may use his formation of last year so the formation I choose is just my prediction and yes 1 holding midfield because we destroyed Spurs with it last season, Thats not to say your right and am wrong ;)

It's very well possible that he reverts back to 'the point backwards', but I don't think he'll do it yet because he didn't use it in preseason. I think he wants to play 4231 this season and only if that doesn't work he might tinker a bit and change it back. The 433 of last season will be the first formation he tries if he decides to switch it up.

    Very plausible

Man, you know how much this team means to you when you anxiously look forward to the first game of the new season. Kicking things off against the Spurs is not ideal, but if it means we are going to start the season with full focus and determination, then I like that. Our starts in the last couple of seasons hurt us a lot and made us chase the league all season long. We need a good start this time, particularly with less uncertainty around the team and the fact that we are having the same manager from last year.

Less than 48 hours to go, can't wait!!!

Also can't settle on a starting 11! My prediction right now is:

    --------------- Johnstone ----------------
    -- Darmian - Smalling - Blind - Shaw --
    Depay - Schneiderlin - Herrera - Young
    ------------------ Mata -------------------
    ----------------- Rooney -----------------

But that leaves out Carrick so hmmmm....

Johnstone? huge shout to put him in there. Wheres DDG?

Van gaals new 4-3-3 hasn't worked too well. IMHO He would be better off moving mata centrally in this formation and moving depay on the wing. Pedro's arrival will help a lot with the current problems we have.

On saturday I would like to see Schneiderlin, Herrera and Mata in midfield with Rooney Young and Memphis up front. Maybe that's too gungho for LVGs liking

Footballs back  and the emotion, drama and downright cringyness of the match day thread has returned.
    DDG
    Valencia Jones Smalling Shaw
    Carrick
    Herrera Morgan
    Mata Rooney Depay

    Subs used - Young(Depay), Basti(Morgan), Wilson(Mata)

Any reason Valencia would start over Darmian who's been excellent during pre-season?

    Would like to see:

    .............................DDG................................

    .............Smalling...Carrick...Blind...................

    Darmian....Schniederlin...Schweinsteiger.....Shaw

    ..................Mata................Hererra..............

    ............................Rooney...........................

Forgot about Depay, we really have some depth when you're forced into benching Hererra or Depay.
Bench Mata and you don't have to bench either of those two.

There must be some doubts about whether the Schwein is up to speed yet. Pre-season suggested it will be a front 6 of Carrick, Mata, Young, Memphis, Rooney, and maybe Schneid.

Last season after we dropped the diamond for the second time we reverted to 4-2-3-1 or as he calls it 4-3-3 with the point forward before we went to the 4-3-3 with the point backwards.

Yeah I admit I was conflicted on that one, but I don't think DDG's head will be right. Unless he comes out and states his commitment to United for the 15/16 season, at least, I'm not sure he should be first choice.

He didn't seem right during pre-season and, if his mind is elsewhere, we have other keepers who must be dreaming of playing for us. Kinda liked the fact that LVG threw some youngsters in at the deep end last season - I think it made some of them stronger in the long term and it would be a huge boost to Johnstone to get the nod for our first game.

This is what I'm seeing for Saturday. The Blind move initially baffles me but hopefully proved wrong.

Would prefer Mata in the 10 and Depay out wide. Hoping that the Schneid/Carrick isn't treacle through the middle.

Sad to think of an 11 without Herrera given how good he was last season and what he gives us.

Well, shit. I'm guessing Sam Johnstone will start? To bad Valdes is not available...

I'm going with Johnstone. He's played in pre-season and did reasonably well, and Romero might not have settled in yet.

Edit: Never mind, didn't know he went on loan. Going with Romero then.

Romero and Blind up against Kane. He must be licking his lips at the prospect.

What a terrible way to prepare for the season if that happens.

Kinda makes Valdes look like a dick now. He could have been starting these weekend had he not had a barney with Van Gaal.

I think it'll be Johnstone too, the manager goes on about match practice all the time. I suspect it'll be the same mentality with goalkeepers too.

Well with this De Gea news from the conference, I'm concerned. Surely Romero can't play either because of Van Gaal's strict match rhythm rule? He hasn't played at all or even trained for that long. Would he play Valdes?

He didn't went on loan.We rejected the deal.

If Romero didn't have enough "match rhythm" do you really think Valdes has?He hasn't played any single minute of football at any level this summer.Romero played in Copa America. Not even trained with the first team while the "unfit" Lindegaard had.

DDG won't start, Valdes is having a slinging match with LVG, Romero has had no game time, Must mean Johnstone starts?

LVG needs to suck it up and play Valdes. We might get away with a subpar GK against Spurs, but we can't take the chance in the CL qualifier where every mistake could be huge.

Pissed off big time that a club of this size has allowed the DDG situation to get to this point.

I know we tried to play hard ball with Madrid but just ended up getting played. Sell him now, get some funds and go out and get a proper replacement.

Forget Ramos but go out and buy a proper CB.

I like Dave, good lad, but this annoys me.
