Not sure you know what “literally” means, makes no sense in this context.

Maybe I should have said “somebody like Gomes” rather than the kid himself. This typically how Fergie introduced young players to the first team - big home game, here’s your chance laddie, don’t feck it up.

    Any news on Alexis?

Need that update before I submit a line-up prediction.

I would be shocked if we lose this. We turn up for big games lately and I think(and hope) the players will want to right the wrong from the last game.

Well you're wrong. "Literally" has been used and accepted as a form of emphasis in this manner for a long time.

    Is it though?

This is a tough away fixture for anybody in the league. You had a poor performance last week but that's not necessarily a sign that the sky is falling in, we're likely to see a response from you and at home your record against the top six is impressive. You're extremely difficult to break down in these kind of games and will always have that presence on the counter, and like I said I expect to see some of the players really go for it and try to shut up some of the media talk. One bad loss doesn't suddenly make you a terrible team.

I think it's very possible it'll end up 1-0/2-1 to you or something, and people will go 'they Spurs'd it!', when really we would have just lost in a tight game away to the side who finished second last season. Again, I think people are overreacting to one bad performance because they didn't like Mourinho/his style to start with.
I don't think people are overreacting at all.

For me it's not even the Brighton result that that bothers. The signs of a poor season precede it.

If Spurs have any title ambitions this is a game they should be winning.

… If Spurs have any title ambitions this is a game they should be winning.

It's a game we should be at least getting a point from, but to say we should be winning it or else we have no title ambitions is a bit extreme. City only got a draw away to Wolves.

I think he perhaps was talking more about the message it sends by winning rather than the result itself.

Not many are counting you as genuine title contenders this season, but win tomorrow and it sends a message.

Spurs have scored Zero Goals and had Zero points at Old Trafford since Potch too over. It's not their game to lose.

Exactly this. We're trash at OT, pretty much all Spurs fans I know would rip your arm off for a point right now.

We don't really have title ambitions .. at least not serious ones, top four will be the realistic aim for the season. Even if you're having a poor season it's still a very tough away game at a ground where few pick up 3 points, and one we've consistently struggled at. A point would be great for us away from home.

How can you not have title ambitions??

How can you not have title ambitions??

By being realistic. We don't have the squad for it, how exactly are we expected to make up that gap on City? Liverpool also spent big this summer, it will be hard to compete.

Of course everybody wants to win the title, but our expectation for the season is top four, so with that being the case I'm not going to be annoyed if we draw at Old Trafford.

If Spurs come for a point, I think they will get it.

The only way I can see United winning this game is if Spurs offer a lot of attacking ambition, allowing for Jose to make use of his counter-attacking strategy that tends to work well against the bigger teams.

Think it'll be a tight game either way, potentially settled by a set piece or moment of quality, which despite your current struggles you clearly have. I expect United to be up for it, I'm not buying that the players have rebelled against Mourinho or whatever, think they'll want to try and put things right after a crappy performance.

We need at least a point, tbh. We can't keep losing all our big away games, time to show some guts.

The funny thing is I think this is very wrong. Over Mourinho's time here, the times we've scored in big games have been when we were on top and attacking.
    • Chelsea. We blew them away in the 2-0 game by being very aggressive. 2-1. We came back strongly in the second half, putting them under pressure after going behind.
    • City. Similar to the 2-1 game against Chelsea.
    • Spurs. 1-0 game was a drab affair with both team playing crap. 2-1 game was similar the Chelsea game. Tried to soak pressure, concede then change approach.
    • Liverpool. Scored two early goals and sat back but pressed high in the first ten minutes.
    • Arsenal.blew them away by being ultra aggressive and one of the few times we've pressed very high.
Out results have come when we have gone for it for different reasons at certain periods. Either out of necessity or just playing well. Very few times have we gotten joy out of sitting back simply because for a counter attacking team, our counters are not very good.

Really miss looking forward to games. Bank holiday tomorrow and to be honest I'd rather the game not be tomorrow. Having to cut short a day out with family to trek to OT, probably to be bored and frustrated watching us huff and puff whilst Spurs control possession and we struggle to create more than four chances all game.

I'd love to be proven wrong ! W

I would take out Rashford and put Sanchez in there. Left back is much of muchness from either team. Possibly Matic would get in there too but otherwise, not a lot to argue.

Davies is a good left back. If Matic and Son are available I'd have them both in over Dembele/Rashford, then have Sanchez just behind Kane?

This game has a bore draw all over it. However, let's go optimistic and say 2-0 United. Come on lads, much needed improvement on last week.

Honestly don't care. If we win, good. If we lose, at least we go closer to change.

We need 2 midfielders behind pogba or they will dominate us there.

    That's a well written summary.
I wonder if Carrick/McKenna suggest that we go more attacking, for a series of 5 or so games, just to see if we get better results?
When Giggs was with LVG, I felt that Giggs did not offer ideas to LVG, which were implemented. In otherwords, we were not seeing the attacking style of play which Giggs had used under Fergie for 20+ years.
In the same way, I am seeing that Carrick/McKenna don't appear to have made any change to our style of play.

Yep pretty much what I'd do. I'd like to say Martial if he played like he did in his first season or first half of last season, but unlikely.
    De Gea
    Trippier Alderweireld Vertonghen Davies
    Pogba Matic
    Eriksen Sanchez Son
    Kane
    Seems fair.

I can't see us Changing our approach, even for a few games. A manager like Mourinho, with all his experience is going to live and die by his ideas.
And with the way the last game went, think the focus will be on not making mistakes.

If Matic and Smalling (yes, I’m serious) plays - we can win this game. Hel it’s Tottenham and we can win anyway, but we really need Matic in the middle here. If we play Fred, Shaw, Lindelöf and Mata (and no Matic), we can easily lose. We need to get our best players out on the pitch

If Spurs win. United will already be 6 points behind Spurs, Liverpool & Chelsea

Combined with the negative feeling around the club, think Mourinho may be sacked?

Wouldn't completely shock me. But hopefully a non issue

I went for us to win 1-0 on the caf score predictor. Now expect us to lose because I swear every single time, I predict us to win on the caf predictor, we always lose/draw. We just never seem to win!
Here's hoping for the jinx to end tomorrow once and for all!

Not actually sure what the answer is, but I really hope we try something different on the right hand side, it's clear that Mata there isn't really working.

Jose will only be sacked when it is mathematically impossible to get top 4 OR if we are so bad (ie. near relegation zone).
This is what we saw with both LVG and Moyes. The reason: money. It's cheaper to sack the manager for not getting top 4, than to sack him when he still has a chance of getting top 4. I heard on a youtube channel (not 100% sure if this is correct), that our managers have a clause in their contract stating that if they fail to get CL football for the next season, their severance package is reduced.

With the case of Woodward, you just need to think from a money angle. If an action will reduce the profits of the club, Woodward won't do it. if the action can increase the profits, Woodward will do it.

Woodward is not a football man - he is a business man and throughout his career, his performance has been measured on financials....not footballing style or entertainment. Of course, some may argue that if we are boring to watch, it will effect our financials. Woodward will say that we haven't won the league title for years, yet we are the most profitable club in the EPL and in fairness, who can argue against that?

    LOL, same here.
And for that reason, I haven't done a score prediction for around a year, now.
