We than have to pick 3 poor Cb's instead of 2 and can only play 2 of Sanchez Lukaku Rashford and Martial. We would be bwtter sticking Martial and Rashford/Sanchez wide and actually getting the ball to them frequently, Lukaku certainly needs support though.
If they really are that poor then they could certainly do with the extra cover of another centre back. And more importantly I think our forwards operate a lot better in this formation as well too. Our fullbacks too also don't have to have as much defensive responsibility.

I would like to see this lineup against Spurs:

    ---------------De Gea

    Young Bailly Lindelof Smalling Shaw

    -------------Fred Pogba

    ---------------Lingard

    ----------Lukaku Sanchez

Not "beautiful football", but I think we tried something different. Some sort of uncomfortable blend of a passing style and a low block. I'm thinking we might be seeing the early influence of the new coaches as Jose tries to combine their ideas with his core philosophy.

I'm far from a Jose defender but my reading of the first two games is that Jose has been trying something he's not used to, which at least partly explains why the players looked so confused and scared to play during the Brighton match.
Really. I saw more of the same boring shit we played last season.

Weird how the mass opinion fluctuates so much on here. A week ago Periera was on every team sheet and a certain ever-present in our midfield for years to come. Now, after struggling against Brighton he's made it into hardly anyone's team and is being ridiculed and apparently isn't even an option.

"Boring" and "shit" still apply tbf. However I thought there seemed to be a greater effort to keep passing the ball along the ground rather than always lumping it up to the forwards as we did last season. There was more endeavour to play out of the opponents' press as well. Not sure if this was simply the effect of having players like Peirera and Fred instead of Matic and Pogba though. Did you notice any of this, or was I completely imagining things?

Custis and the sun (vomit) are reporting we are having a Ed Out banner flown over the ground an hour before kick off.

I have a funny feeling we will win this to paper over the cracks for a little while. Nearly always play better against the top sides, playing like a lower league underdog. It won't be pretty though.

By the poll spurs are huge favourite i see. Come on people, it is easy 2.0 victory. We will play 3412 and win in ugly match.

You might be right. I'm not sure. I spent half the match with my eyes on my phone. :p

I predict a 0-1 Eriksen special - sinking Mou deeper and deeper into the mire.

When do we ever make anything look easy?

Spurs shit themselves at Old Trafford, if we manage to not beat ourselves we'll win this comfortably.

Our last 3 PL home matches against Spurs have been 1-0 cagey shitfest performances. I'd hardly call that Spurs shitting themselves. Expect a 0-0, 1-1, or a comfortable Spurs win.
With that said, we'll probably win 1-0 again and I'm okay with that at this point.

Considering we've lost the return fixtures by 3 goal margins, I'd consider that shitting themselves.

Could also see a 0-0 or a 0-1 Spurs victory coming in the last 5mins after we've parked the bus at home and had one shot on target.

1-2 Spurs is what I think is most likely though.

No I agree. Especially in the beginning of the game. We stood way higher with our back-four than we usually do as well. It actually didnt look completely shite. For a short while. Then we conceded and all of what confidence might have been there from the pre-season and we were back defending low. Which with a central line of Bailly, Lindelof, Fred and Pereira always was going to be suicidal. Which Mourinho probabaly recognised to begin with and thats why started the way we did. When it collapsed it collapsed though.

So yeah, I think it was because of the players available. We will be back to normal from the start against Spurs though with a central line of Smalling, Jones, Matic and Fellaini. I think that was the end of Joses "experiment". And it might even be for the best. I always believed in letting him playing his type of football as long as he is here. Another thing is if he should be or not.

I think Spurs could potentially give us a bit of a thumping if we line up as we have for the first two games, so I expect Jose to name a REALLY defensive line-up, with a bit of fight to it - Fellaini and Herrera to come back in and offer some grit and some cover to the fullbacks. I think the Chuckle brothers will keep their places in central defence, but I expect Smalling to join them to handle Kane. Mata and Martial to be replaced by Lingard and Rashford to gives us more energy and running.

    De Gea
    Young - Bailly - Smalling - Lindelof - Shaw
    Herrera - Pogba - Fellaini
    Lingard
    Lukaku

I'd be pleasantly surprised to see Jose be a bit more positive, dust his players off after last week and go for:

    De Gea
    Young - Bailly - Lindelof - Shaw
    Herrera - Pereira - Pogba
    Lingard - Lukaku - Rashford

Balls to the score, how about possession predictions? I'm going 29/71.

So many times it was expected we would get a tonking at OT and most times we would win. We never get a tonking at home.

Very worried about our ability to track runners from midfield. If Brighton and Leicester can hurt us, imagine what spurs are going to do.

After a defeat, it's all about the reaction. A positive reaction and a win and things will seem so much better.

Until the next game (away to Burnley).

I think we will get battered by Tottenham, but manage to hold on for a 2-0 loss. Mourino will not criticise his players, 'don't have the right attitude' Pogba will be enacting scenes from Dragon ball Z with Big rom and small Sanchez, and we will be raging here at Redcafe. Just another day at the office.

Atleast old man Rooney is lighting up the MLS.
Is that it though? Are you sure the world won't end that day?

I agree with Merson......What's got into him he can't write a piece this season without getting in "because they are the biggest club in the world"!

    Bailly Smalling Lindelof
    Valencia Periera Fred Shaw

Mourinho needs to go back to his beloved 4231.

If we're going to sit back and defend, then we need to dfeend with two banks of four and hit teams on the counter.

Not going to happen, but I'd go with:

    Lukaku
    Rashford Sanchez Lingard
    Matic Pogba
    Shaw Lindelof Smalling Valencia
    De Gea

I'd be quite happy to counter. The problem is that none of our attackers seem to have the ability to counter attack.
When we hit a team on the break, we bring the ball forward and when in the final third of the pitch, our players stop and will either do a back pass or wait for the opposing defenders to get in position, after which the attack is resumed. It is bizarre that our attackers have not worked out that counter attacking is about speed and taking a risky chance. Most of the time, the shot at goal will not go in, but on rare occasions it does go in. If you score on the counter, in a match where the opponent has dominated possession, usually the game is finished as the opponent is completely winded. I still remember when we played Jose's Chelsea, under LVG. we had 71% possession and one time they get the ball, they hit us on the counter and won the game 1-0. Meanwhile we were spending most of our times doing side/back passing.

What is the reaction if we win this? We would actually be mirroring last years results, which isn’t suprising considering we have only added one player to the starting eleven.

It would be interesting if we win.
Like you said, beat LCFC at home, lost to Brighton away, beat Spurs at home....exactly as last season, with essentially the same team as last season.

If Matic isn't present, we will play with 3-5-2 using Pogba, Fred and Lingard in midfield.

If he's present, will be the usual 4-3-3.

Problem with this is for a lot of the games when we play this it becomes more like 6 or 7 at the back with two screens in front of them then Lukaku hovering on the halfway line. So much pressure is put on those wide players that it’s nigh impossible for the to get forward and support Lukaku as they are basically playing as a 2nd set of fullbacks.

Can’t wait for this game to come around as I do think we’ll somehow win it and maybe a bit of normality can return, it’s been a hell of a long week with the Brighton defeat and feel like we just need a game already.

I think we should try Pereira on the Right wing, like he played in Valencia. He could not be worse than Mata.

    ---------------Lukaku----------------

    ---Sanchez-------Lingard------Pereira

    --------------Matic---------Pogba------

    Shaw-------Bailly-------Smalling------Young
