Looking forward to this one. Genuinely can't call it with confidence but I have a feeling we will win somehow. It just seems the type of game we'll win under the circumstances.

I’ve gone back to 433. Valencia in for Young. Smalling for Bailly. Matic in for Perreira. Lingard, Rom & Sanchez up front. We will lose 1-0. There will be a meltdown.

Either that or because he was fecking awful against Brighton!

Given that playing well gets him dropped as well, I don't think there is a correlation between his performance and his selection.

    At the Lowry

A good way of telling who is in the squad is usually by seeing which players have met up with the squad at The Lowry Hotel. It isn't foolproof, and last season there have been quite a few times where players have not been seen at the hotel yet been in the playing squad due to them going to the hotel either via a different entrance earlier or them staying in the hotel overnight.

The Manchester Evening News photographers have seen the following players:

Goalkeepers (2): David de Gea, Lee Grant
Defenders (7): Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw
Midfielders (9): Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, Fred, Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini
Forwards (3): Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez

Martial and Bailly weren't sighted. It could be that they went to a different entrance or were there earlier but it is unlikely. Both were seen at the hotel prior to the Leicester City game.

Without both it does leave us a bit thin on the ground - particularly at centre back, unless the reports that Mourinho is considering using Matic there are true.

Shaw was voted RedCafe Man of the Match against Brighton but with both Valencia and Young now fit, will he make way?
Don't know about others but I'm trying to force myself not to care. I'm failing at the moment.
I don't have any expectation but I'm still worried about being disappointed.

    De Gea

    Valencia Lindelof Smalling Shaw
    Matic
    Fred Pogba
    Lingard Lukaku Sanchez

Bench: Grant, Young, Jones, Pereira, Fellaini, Mata, Rashford

    Left out: Darmian, McTominay, Herrera

That is my guess. Struggling with fullbacks though as my gut feeling is he'll go for Valencia and Young.

    Hopefully Martial has been exiled.

Bailly could easily be dropped too based on his performance. They were the worst two of a terrible bunch so it would make sense.

    Matic and Valencia will start.

That's my team as well but I put Jones as a starter beside Smalling.

I’m trying to force myself to care. Not watching this live today. Decided I will work out of the office and make money rather than plan my day around a United match for the first time in years. We have a squad capable of winning this comfortably but I have a fealing it will be a grinding 0-0 or 1-1 at best.

Yeah, he was another I was 50/50 about but felt it might be too many changes to the side. Can't really complain if he does go back to the Smalling Jones combo.

Think Lindelof does't earn any kind of trust in a tough game like this. With Jones it'll be exactly the same side we defeated them with in Fa Cup semi final except Young and Herrera.

Good point. Might change to that too but the lack of game time for 3 of the back 4 isn't great.

I wouldn’t worry about that change being one too many. They’re by far the most familiar pairing and as much as people may hate to admit it they’re comfortably the most reliable, which is a damning indictment of the rest. Jones tends to struggle immediately after layoffs and probably had the worst game of his career vs Spurs last season at Wembley.

It’s a risk but all of them are. Cheers Ed.

Smalling/Jones combo at the back is bound to be a disaster. Both of them are lacking match fitness and to bring them both back at the same time would be a mistake. They never play well together anyway. I hope for Bailly and Lindelof again but with Matic infront.

of course you would- we've a lack of attacking options on the bench and surely an 18 including Matic, Herrera, Fred and McTominay is overkill
We'd still have attacking options from Lingard, Lukaku, Mata, Rashford, Sanchez and Fellaini & Pereira. Pereira's been playing as a #6 but certainly capable of playing further forward too.

I'd expect 3 or 4 potentially of the players you mentioned to start- useful to have someone of Martials quality on the bench at least

I think he'll play a 3 in midfield of Matic/Pogba and Fellaini with Lingard/Sanchez supporting Lukaku

    De Gea
    Smalling Jones Shaw
    Matic Pogba Fred
    Sanchez Lukaku Martial

Not playing with a RB as cant decide from Valencia, Darmian, Young who is worse

It’s a tough one to predict. It could be a any back 4 combination.

    At a guess I’d say,

    .....................DDG...................
    Valencia....Smalling...Jones....Shaw
    .........Fred.....Matic...Pogba..........
    ............<—-Lingard—->..........
    ..........Lukaku......Rashford/Sanchez

Jones Smalling partnership just gives me flashbacks to Spurs away last January and that horrendous car crash display they gave.

Pretty much but at least Jose has his scapegoats for last weeks debacle

That was just Jones. Smalling gets constantly blamed for other people's mistakes it's really weird.

Smalling's main deficiency is that he can't play with the ball for toffee, When it comes to defending the box Smalling is sublime.

    Went for this,
    De Gea
    Young Smalling Lindelof Shaw

    Fred Pogba Pereira

    Lingard Lukaku Sanchez

Think with Jones,Matic and Valencia not having much of a pre-season they'll be on the bench and Matic will come on late.

Sanchez and Lingard in 433 is the worst possible wing combo, zero width and ability to take on players.

Reminds me a whole lot about last season’s game, very similar circumstances. Difference being that Kane didn’t play that game of course, but he’s been pretty knackered thus far. It will be tight, boring and ugly - it will come down to 2-3 chances. Sadly, we know very well that their striker is much better than ours - but as long as that one big chance is pulled away, no-one could care at all. Last season I remember them having a very dangerous set-piece cleared off the line, then we scored a goal out of nothing with Lukaku setting up Martial straight after a goal-kick. I’d take that again

Sanchez will be a kicking bag if he plays so hopefully he can be used as bait whilst Rom & Pog link up and punish them

    Simplistic tactic for the win!

Joking aside I hope fans can just ignore the bullshit and drama from every single media outlet, and just enjoy the match!

Ignore the build up and sip on a pint instead until kickoff!

Not sure about that. I recall Smalling standing statue like when Delle Ali ran on to Kane’s flick for the first goal.

Maybe I’m wrong but I think they were both awful.

I'm so ready for this match. Nothing better than pizza and United on a lazy monday evening.

    If I were a girl

Yep, someone has gone to the trouble of faceswapping all of our players as women.

If you want to discuss them, go here.
Nervous for the game. If we don't play a lot better than we did against Brighton it could be a very onesided affair. Tottenham are a much better team than Brighton.

Hopefully this kind of game suits us better. A game where we can focus on sitting back and nullifying their strenghts. Perhaps Rashford or Lukaku could breakaway in a quick counterattack and find us goal as well.

    A smash and grab 1-0?
