Matic on the left side of a 3?

So Bailly - Smalling - Matic?

Or do we drop Bailly, I'd argue he was worse than Lindelof? Or do both keep their place & Smalling stays out?

Lindelof will keep his place as Jose wants his CBs to have passing skills. I think Pereira and Bailly get the drop for this one.

Lindelof, Matic, Smalling - Valencia, Fred, Pogba, Young - Mata - Alexis, Lukaku.

If Mourinho hated Martial then he wouldn't have even started against Brighton. Most thought it'd be Rashford starting instead.

I wouldn't put it passed Mourinho to play players just to prove a point. It is evident to anyone watching us, that Martial's performances since pre-season do not merit a selection.
Ditto with starting Lindelof and Bailly, when we know Lindelof will struggle and that Bailly can be terribly inconsistent.
Mourinho has spent his entire career trying to send what he thinks are subtle messages to the board/players/fans. You can't take Mourinho in the 1st degree (sic).

    This is absolutely asinine.

It was a huge game - We were just coming off a win and you think he intentionally sabotaged the team to prove a point?

Was Martial in on it? Because if that was the plan he certainly played the part.

The players need some accountability too.

Really do not want to see Matic at CB. It's like when we brought in Carrick at CB temp to do the same job.

He offers so much more to the team in his natural position than he would as a short term fix.

I'd accept it as part of a back 3, where he is the one tasked with bringing the ball out and playing. I'd be interested to see us in the 343/523 that Conte used. I think it would suit is in many ways.

    "An inspiration"

With all the talk surrounding Mourinho this past few weeks, Pochettino has had some good things to say about what he has learned from the Manchester United manager:

"A lot of things. I think for every single manager that is younger than him he was the inspirational manager.

"Of course he is an unbelievable manager and of course the circumstances that happen with myself and happen with different managers is always going to be up and down. He has been inspirational -- but I am younger than him."

    -------Smalling--Matic--Lindelof---
    ----------------Pereira--------------
    ---Valencia-----------------Shaw---
    -----------------Fred----------------
    ------------------------Pogba------
    -----Lukaku--------Sanchez--------

I go with line-up prediction how I would have the team setup. Not how Jose would necessarily think.

A big game under the floodlights at Old Trafford and I wouldn't care if I missed it. I think we'll win comfortably, too. Damn, I miss the excitement.

I would swap Smalling and Lindelof - I think his team would be decent. It would definitely benefit Pereira having an experienced player behind him.

Not sure about the idea of not putting Martial in the squad. If you are chasing a winner, he is 1/2 possibilities from the bench alongside Rashford and it's not like Rashford has been in good form either.

If chasing the game, there is always hoofing it to Fellaini.

And Martial made a pigs ear of that opportunity.
Throughout pre-season and now the EPL season, Martial has been abysmal. During pre-season, I'd say Martial was the worst of the 22 players, on the pitch.
To my memory, his last good game for us was back in January.

I certainly wouldn't start with Martial, though as a sub, he does seem to be effective against tired defenders.

Matic in defense. And so it begins ...
    There's this as well.

    Leaked team news
A bit of early team news for you is that Smalling and Jones are expected to start tonight.

Surely we won't be experimenting with Matic in defence in such a big game.

Actually feeling kind of optimistic about this game now. We need to bounce back and send a message that we're not complete push overs this season, and Spurs are going to want to take some points as it is. Got a feeling it's going to turn out a decent game.

These kinds of things tend to work out well from Mourinho. Like Zouma as a holding midfielder at Chelsea or Herrera man marking Hazard.

I agree, especially if we're playing three at the back tonight, and given what Bailly/Lindelof served up last week.

But I meant more along the lines of media whipping things up again, making it a 'Jose's statement to the board playing Matic at CB after the horror show at Brighton' story. He's not exactly been nice to them this week, and they'll be hungry to pounce back at him again.

I just want to see a backlash from the players. I want to see them go out and get stuck in for the shirt and for the fans.
Agree totally - they have to show fight and guts after last week’s train wreck of a game.

Matic at CB would be typical Jose.

It's just like a kid who doesn't want to wear his Primark socks. He wants Gucci socks. So he comes downstairs with a pair of cats on his feet.

First time I’ve really gotten a look at Smalling’s new hairstyle. Looks good on him. No homo

I think it's a bit of both inthat, a potential inclusion of Matic in a back three would send a message but not because he wants that, more so because the transfer debale of the summer made it so he has to improvise since he didn't have the CB that he wanted. maybe from the begining he wanted to swith to three at the back. we certainly saw that multiple times during preseason.

Does Jose have a clue what his best team is?

Well, midfield and attack are pretty settled. Pogba Fred and Matic + Sanchez and Lukaku and one of (lingard/Mata).

It's the defense that he hasn't a clue about. the two CBs position to be precise.
