    This is absolutely asinine.

It was a huge game - We were just coming off a win and you think he intentionally sabotaged the team to prove a point?

Was Martial in on it? Because if that was the plan he certainly played the part.

The players need some accountability too.

You really can't win. you play Martial, you want to sabotage the team and send a message. you don't play him, you are mistreating him.

The players didn't perform, it's as simple as that. the squad that we have should have breezed past brighton even if Jose's son was manager. they had absolutely no excuse. i don't get why people talk about coaching when the players couldn't even make simple passes.

Presumably he’s just going to change he CB pairing yet again. 2 years in and he can’t even settle on a CB partnership let alone a settle XI. Really annoying.

Is that really surprising with all the agendas on here?

If the players aren’t up for this after the battering they’ve had this week they’ll never be up for anything.

Think we might go with 3 at the back for this. Just hope we put in a good performance and get a positive result.

    There's this as well.

    Leaked team news
A bit of early team news for you is that Smalling and Jones are expected to start tonight.

    1_ECE_09_MAN_UNITED_LOWRY.jpg

    That haircut explains his benching.

    Based on the rumours:

    De Gea
    Young Smalling Matic Lindelof Shaw
    Pogba Fred
    Lingard Lukaku Alexis
Expecting a draw at best, which is a shame because there could be real potential in that front 5.

I wouldn't put it passed Mourinho to play players just to prove a point. It is evident to anyone watching us, that Martial's performances since pre-season do not merit a selection.

    This is absolutely asinine.

So...Jose purposely put Martial into the team, because he knew he would suck, so would prove how crap Martial is.
And Martial put in a shit performance to prove to Jose that he actually is shit?
Damn, this is some next level, genius mind games that Martial and Jose are playing with eachother.

For the record, I don't believe Jose would sabotage our team/performance, by playing a player out of form.
I think that he wanted to give Martial the opportunity to do something special in the match.

    Smalling and Jones to start?

Rumours according to the Manchester Evening News are that both Smalling and Jones will be starting tonight. Hopefully we won't be in for a repeat of this from last season:

Starting lineup that game: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Young, Matic, Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Sanchez, Lukaku.

We did beat them 2:1 in the FA Cup semi finals that season with the same back four and just one change from that side (Herrera in for Martial). Another rumour is that Matic will be starting as part of defence - presumably to solidify the side and not make us as open as we were when we face Spurs at Wembley in the league.

Line-up predictions close in 10 minutes.
    ----------------DDG-----------------
    -------Smalling--Matic--Lindelof---
    ----------------Pereira--------------
    ---Valencia-----------------Shaw---
    -----------------Fred----------------
    ------------------------Pogba------
    -----Lukaku--------Sanchez--------

I go with line-up prediction how I would have the team setup. Not how Jose would necessarily think.

Don't think Pereira is good enough playmaker to control the tempo from the back with spurs pressing.

Heard it all now really.
Plays him, wants to give a message, doesn't play him, hates him.

Absolutely baffling decision to start Jones & Smalling together after making the point that we need to not make defensive mistakes. Jones is a liability and was to blame for the loss against Spurs last season.

I dont think that pairing will be any worse than Bailly and Lindelof last week. Who else have we got that we can play?

Bailly and Lindelöf were a mess the last time out but dropping both wouldn't be good for their confidence. Would have liked them to start again tonight to show that they can bounce back.

But at the same time I can understand if Jose wants to give Smalling and Jones another go since they are more experienced in games like these.

You are right. It is far-fetched. And given I am not privy to the training sessions, maybe Martial did something there to deserve a start. But based on pre-season, I wouldn't have played him.
I don't trust Mourinho. He claimed at the end of last season that he is not playing Bailly because his team is not qualified for the World Cup but plays Sanchez whose team is also not qualified for the world cup ahead of Martial. I don't think that is fair. Whilst I'd not accuse him of sabotage, I wouldn't put it passed him to make team selections to prove a point, to either the board or the fans.

Smalling and Jones never work. And if it's a back 3 it'll be even worse. Spurs will press them like they did at Wembley and we won't be able to play.

Don’t think it’s wise dropping both Bailly and Lindelof. They were shite but it’s not going to help the situation in defence for the season. We need to stick with at least one of them.

Can’t believe we’re reverting back to the Smalling - Jones shit storm again.

Amazing that, after all the money we’ve spent, our “best XI” may still contain the names Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Young

Mourinho ready to sabotage the season, get his paycheck and move on. Why else would you start the walking talking disasters that are smalling and jones?

Maybe he has learned to use his left foot for clearances :wenger:

Lindelof alongside Matic could help his development long term. Tonight probably not the place to trial it though.

Because the alternatives are clearly not up to scratch - based on last weeks horrific defensive display.

    Last minute lineup questions

Just under forty minutes until the lineups are out and there are a few question marks over what the starting XI will be.

    Better the devil(s) you know?

They say familiarity breeds contempt and two players who receive the ire of United fans more than any other (bar Fellaini) are Smalling and Jones. For the first two games of the season, Lindelof and Bailly were made the starting centre backs with Jones left out of the squads and Smalling put on the bench.

Now, they could both be set to play with Bailly not seen at the Lowry and Lindelof's performance against Brighton derided. If it is true that both Smalling and Jones will be starting, I don't think anybody comes out of this looking good but they are the only alternative and have done okay for us in the past.

With Valencia back from injury, we could be seeing a back four of defenders who have been at the club since at least 2011 (Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Young) but with Young looking poor against Brighton while Shaw was one of the few players putting an effort in, it would be harsh to drop Shaw now.

    Matic the centre back?

In summer, there were a few rumours that Mourinho was looking to play Matic at centre back if a new defender wasn't going to be signed. Those rumours have resurfaced tonight with suggestions he could be part of a back three. If this is the case then I assume Pereira will be starting with Fred and Pogba, though it is hard to say.

    Who will play in attack?

Two of the starters today will likely be Lukaku and Sanchez, but there is still the question of who will join them. Last season Lingard was the preferred option in these sorts of games but with rumours that we are going to play a back three, there might not be any room for someone to join the pair.

    Damien's predicted XI

    De Gea

    Valencia Jones Smalling Shaw
    Matic
    Fred Pogba
    Lingard Lukaku Sanchez

I feel we might see Pereira in the lineup for an attacker or Fred if we are going three at the back, but sticking with the prediction as if it is going to be a back four.

Was he sabotaging the season when he started two different CB’s last week? If you want to talk about sabotage, look at our transfer window.
