As a Spurs fan I feel that if we can keep the ball then we will be able to exploit the weak sides of Pogba by forcing him to defend and mark. That way we can get our fullbacks forward and pin your fullbacks back which will allow for space for Eriksen and Alli to drift into. I feel a lot of this will hinge on the midfield battle.

If you play Pogba against Alli, Pogba will be the DM. I'd say switch Matic and Pogba as Pogba is good physically and can battle with Dembele quite well. Then have Herrera on Eriksen, which means switching Pogba and Herrera in our 4-3-3 as Eriksen comes in off our left and so Herrera will be LCM and Pogba RCM.

I don't think it's important whether or not Dier is creative but more that if he has space on the ball, all the others in front of him will start moving and that's trouble for us. Dybala didn't offer much in a defensive sense against Spurs but he did press when Spurs had the ball deep and also his threat in behind kept Dier more honest. We won't have an AM if we play 4-3-3 so we won't even get these benefits.

Last time Pogba played against Dembele it didn't end well and he got dominated.

If you are talking about our 2-0 loss, Pogba was on Eriksen and it was why him and Fellaini were subbed off. They failed to track Eriksen in certain areas.

Thought Dembele was the one instructed to contain Pogba during most of the game ?

The whole midfield was dominated. It was a team problem in my eyes, not down to any individual. And, for me, there is no reason Pogba can't outmuscle Dembele if you look at his height. Paul is a very strong boy.

Pogba was targeted with a press by the 3 closest players when he got the ball.Spurs didn't use a man marking system on our midfielders.

Agree on the point that our system in this game was terrible and it was clear before even starting the game that this formation would get exposed easily.

I don't think Pogba is weaker than Dembele physically wise. They're as strong but Dembele tends to have a higher work rate, that's the problem.

    Will guess you're right. :D

I think Pogba was up against Dembele. But when Eriksen came off the right wing Matic had to go over and Pogba was stuck between marking Dele Alli in place of Matic and moving out to press Dembele. That's why he had a bad game but, for the reason I've given, I think it wasn't his fault.

Mourinho went mental at Pogba for the second goal. The only thing he was involved was shadowing Eriksen then ball watching which allowed Eriksen to move into space and pass the ball wide which led to the OG.

I think we were just 'all over the place' for that goal. Pogba is RCM when we play 4-2-3-1 and Dembele is LCM for them. It doesn't really make sense that Pogba was responsible for Eriksen, except in a particular action.

Fellaini came on and was tracking Eriksen. Mourinho went mental at Fellaini because he couldn't keep up with Eriksen due to a knock. Hererra came on for Fellaini and tracked Eriksen.

I could be wrong since I don't really know much about on field tactics, but it looked to me like Pogba was supposed to prevent Eriksen from getting time on the ball, and try to get the ball off him.

I think we're both right/wrong actually. They switched it in the second half, I believe. First half, Son was left, Dele Alli in the centre and Eriksen nominally right. In the second half, Son went to the right, Eriksen went to the centre and Dele Alli was nominally left. Either that or they switched to 4-3-1-2.

I'm rewatching some of the match right now so I have you at a disadvantage. Man, they really did a number on us in this game. They mutilated us. Good times.

Yep, the first step is to not let in a brain-dead goal after the kick off. The next step is to not lose your heads chasing the game.

Went clicking on cricfree to see who is broadcasting it, and realised Spurs are playing some other team:

isn't that the club we got Smalling from?

As usual Jose will have tactics to concede the space and play defensive game. If we become overly defensive, then chances are one of ours will lose concentration and make mistake and then we will concede. Mistakes are bound to happen but Jose tend to be furious over any single mistake.

Would be interesting to see what would be Jose's reaction if one of Matic or Lukaku made a blatant mistake.

Team leak from Neil Curtis is totally crap. No way Jose made his two first substitutions Lingard and Herrera in Bournemouth for no reason, he did it intentionally which is saving them for starting XI against Spurs.

No way Jose drops Sanchez in the match deciding the success of this season too. He wont risk his only chance to win trophy. Our front 6 definitely is Matic-Herrera-Pogba-Lingard-Lukaku-Sanchez

Not feeling very optimistic about this game at all, obviously hoping to be proved wrong. A few pundits seem to be tipping United to win, mostly based on JM's ability to come up with a plan to win the big games, I just hope they are right.

People keep saying this but i'm not sure I buy it.

Lingard was crap and rightly subbed. Herrera had a great game but it seemed like as soon as Lukaku scored he wanted to go more defensive, so subbed on Matic straight away. Not sure Tottenham had anything to do with it TBH, but we shall see.

Sorry to say this but Valencia has been a weak link this season. It worries me.

Worries me too, he doesn’t offer anything going forward at all! His positional awarness whilst we’re defending isn’t good either. Oh well, I’m certain he’s just ticking RB over til we sign someone this summer.

I personally disagree about Valencia. I think he’s about a solid right back as you can have being absolutely let down by the shambolic management of our right side for about 3-4 years

I agree we flood the left side with players and Valencia is isolated on the right, Mata always drifts towards the left the only player that stays out on the right is Rashford and he rarely plays there

Just me or is there no buzz around this game? Really doesn't feel like a cup semifinal at Wembley.

Beautiful weather down here atm. Feels like we should all be doing something else rather than watching football on a sunny day.

With Spurs technically playing at home for this game, our fans need to be on top form in order to even the playing field somewhat. Fortunate that we have some of the best away support in the country then.

Think its going to be a classic, jam packed full of goals, incidents and controversy.

    3-2 United.

Bloody flight's been delayed and will now take up the entire game.

The odds are crazy for this. Basically treating Spurs as the home side.

    DDG
    Valencia - Bailly - Smalling - Young
    Herrera--Matic
    Lingard/Mata--Sanchez--Pogba
