When the fixtures were announced back in June who would have predicted that we would have been going into this game with a weaker squad of players than we finished last season with?

From the team against Valencia I would replace Hernandez with Kagawa or Januzaj and Jones with Evans if fit.

This can't come soon enough. The Twitter thread is depressing.

edit/and if Shaw, Evans, Valencia are out I'd expect to see...

    ---------------DDG--------------
    ----Jones Smalling Blackett----
    Young-------------------- James
    --------Herrera Fletcher--------
    --------------Mata---------------
    --------Rooney Welbeck--------

    -------------De Gea-------------
    ---Jones---Smalling---Blackett---
    Valencia--------------------Young
    ------Fletcher-----Herrera------
    --------------Januzaj--------------
    ------Rooney ---Mata------

    -------------De Gea-------------
    ---Jones---Smalling---Blackett---
    Valencia--------------------Young
    ------Fletcher-----Herrera------
    --------------Mata--------------
    ------Rooney ---Januzaj---------

He hasn't played at all in pre-season and from what we last heard he's injured. No chance he plays Saturday.

Nobody's said he WILL play, i just said i'd like to see it. Think he'd be alright there given our current formation. If anything i think Fellaini warrants a shot next to Herrera against Swansea.

    De Gea
    Jones - Smalling - Evans
    Valencia - Fletcher - Herrrera - Young
    Mata
    Welbeck - Rooney

    Johnstone - Blackett - Fellaini - Cleverley - Kagawa - Januzaj - Hernandez

Bit of a stupid reaction to a promising youth player who's yet to be given a chance considering he impressed while on loan.

    This.

Think Powell next to Herrera would work well. Herrera is tenacious and full of energy and can win the ball back while also contributing to attack also, while the 5 at the back would give us extra security, meaning a CDM isn't necessarily required (against the weaker teams anyway)

Powell deserves a chance, he's had a good loan spell last season, and looked the real deal at Crewe. Would much rather place our faith in him as opposed to Fletcher, who is not only ageing but could be the cause of the stagnation of some of our younger players (such as Powell).

    I went with

    ------------de gea------------
    -----Jones--Evans-Smalling--
    -Young-----------------James-
    ---------Fletcher-Herrera-----
    --------------Mata-------------
    --------Rooney--Hernandez--

only part im doubting is keane for evans

Keane? There's no way we'd play Keane. If Evans is injured Blackett will clearly get the nod.

Hernandez over Welbeck , Welbeck is garbage..

Let's start Kagawa , to give the lads proper service..

Lol, both of those suggestions are ridiculous. Mata and Welbeck were two of our most important players in the pre-season, if the're fit, they'll definitely start. And Welbeck is a far better player than Hernandez, Hernandez is just a better finisher and has better attacking movement. Welbeck offers far more in this system.

    Balls out here, LvG style.

5-1 United, to dispel some of the current jitters being felt around the place.

Come on man, it's one thing to suggest he might come off the bench, but there's zero chance of him starting.

Hope Hernandez doesn't start. We can't afford to start the first game with 10 men.

One advantage is the big international break in September. That is of course nobody gets injured playing for their countries. That's two week where we could get players back if not before. We have to get through 3 league games and one Capital One Cup first leg. Then things might look better. There again they could look worse. Aaaaaargh. I need a lie down.:nervous::)

Really hope Hernandez doesn't start, don't think he touched the ball for the first 35 minutes vs Valencia

Didn't suggest he'd start or make the bench, said i'd like to see it. It's already plain as day that LVG's preferred partnership is Herrera/Fletch. Thought i'd throw my suggestion into the bowl.

Welbeck is a typical overhyped English dud of a player. He trips over his own laces , at least when Hernandez trips he puts the ball in the goal.. With his face. Call me crazy but the last time I checked the point of the damn game was finishing.. I'm not sold on the poor man's Inesta, better to stick someone with vision in the 10 spot.

Not sure why we should play 2 strikers If the choice is Rooney and chicharito.... I know we need to practice the 352 but this is a competitive game. Rather play with young and Januzaj as wingers than play Rooney and chicharito as strikers

I would rather see Wilson than him. It will be interesting to see if Wilson plays for U-21's on Friday. I think he will but would like to see him on the bench.

I'd love to see Wilson get some game time. He can't do anything else to catch the eye in the reserves/ u18.s.... and it would kind of be like a new signing, right!?

Over the past months, It is hard to believe that Hernandez is a great finisher or a better finisher than Welbeck. If I had to estimate, he has missed more than 10 sitters in the past 7-8 months. Moreover, most of his goals are mostly tap in 'recently', which is hard to equate to being a good finisher. He has lost confidence and as such, his ability has suffered from it.

I will prefer to see Januzaj over Hernandez up front to be honest. Hernandez hasn't look good on all the games he have play. Only the goal again Madrid. Too bad Januzaj and RVP star training soo late and aren't 100% for this. Evans, Shaw and Rafael injuries are a mess. I'm not confident on James as a LWB, same for Blacket even though he did good on the tour. I just don't think they are ready to start a PL match yet. Hopefully both deliver.

I'm expecting LVG to pick this line up.

    DDG
    Jones Smalling Blacket
    Young Fletcher Herrera James
    Mata
    Hernandez Rooney
Hopefully on training Januzaj can show enough to be pick over Hernandez. I think even at not 100% fit he can do better than Hernandez. Hopefully Hernandez prove me wrong if he get pick.

Still with all the injuries I think we will win this one 3-1.

Bit of a stupid reaction to a promising youth player who's yet to be given a chance considering he impressed while on loan.

Firstly, he didn't impress on loan. Only for the first month or two. By the end he'd been useless for a good five months and had been dropped because of a bad attitude in training and on the pitch.

Secondly, that's all irrelevant because we're not going to start a youngster who's barely ever played for us and hasn't appeared once in pre-season in our first game of the season. Hence the laughter.

If Valencia, Evans & Shaw are injured then we should just play Blackett & James. The squad is a bit of a mess & we have injuries. If we don't give opportunities to our youngsters in these situations then when will we?
All these players need to become useful squad players are a handful of games where they're not completely rubbish & we get decent results.

I feel, with all the injuries, we'll see an underwheming performance. Hopefully with a win.

Well, I'm not overly impressed so far with this transfer window, but still looking forward to the season getting up and running again. Hopefully our lack of activity in the markets is because LVG sees far more potential in these players and thinks he can get them winning. I'm a bit nervous with our squad, but looking froward to it! At least we got a soft start to the season. Now we need to make sure we take advantage of this run of games to get some momentum and have the good feelings return.

Surely we can't possibly line up with two youngsters making their debut down the left hand side!

We don't really have a choice.

Blackett is likely to play because Evans is injured - and our occasional emergency cb Carrick is injured too - and James is likely to play because Shaw, Rafael and Valencia are all injured. They're the best options we have available. Kinda makes it clear just how thinly spread we are at the back.

I don't see it. One of those three will play, or Van Gaal will do something else.

I agree with this. Shaw is out for 4 weeks but whats the word on Evans and Valencia's injuries? I think Evans may start. If none of them play I still think Van Gaal will do something else, like play Fletcher in defence with James or Blackett as the left wingback. I can't see both starting. Fletch playing in defence would open up a spot for either Cleverley (most likely based on fitness), Kagawa or Fellaini alongside Herrera

It's based on two assumptions: 1 - LVG won't want to change formations this soon into implementing his system, and 2 - he won't give players starts if they're not fully fit. Number 1 because from what I've read he'll place more value on getting the players used to the system than on results (especially early on in the season), and number 2 because he cares more about long term fitness plans than getting a better team in the short term (just look at the handling of RVP's fitness for a clear example of that approach).

Could be completely wrong on either count, really interested to see what he goes with either way.

Yep. Thank goodness we have a "kind" starting run which buys us time to make a couple of signings and get players fit.

If we'd had last seasons start we'd be in severe trouble.
